Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

We always have pancakes on a Sunday for breakfast and that is our pancake day.

I'm in a dither now what to call next Tuesday? We're not religious. So is it "an extra pancake day that's not on a Sunday?"

Simple solution - Pancake Tuesday.

Chickenkeev · 07/02/2024 17:12

Stephenseseses Day 😂

You're right! I left out a syllable.

FloofCloud · 07/02/2024 17:16

Agnostic here - I call it both pancake day and shrove Tuesday depending on how it falls out of my mouth ... I can't be bothered with getting het up about observing any religious festivals in a traditional / religious setting but doesn't bother me if more religious people do - I do get annoyed when people get snarky though at people who chose to observe theee days as tradition rather than religious - so YABU in my opinion

Chickenkeev · 07/02/2024 17:17

I reaĺly am shocked it's not common parlance in the UK tbh. Genuinely like! How did i miss that?

TinkerTiger · 07/02/2024 17:17

It's Carnival Tuesday, thank you very much.

bouncydramatics · 07/02/2024 17:18

It was shrove Tuesday when I was growing up but I call it pancake day now!!!

I've no time to be fasting and I buy the stuff I need for the day I'm not cleaning out the cupboard using the old stuff so it defeats the purpose anyway

Thursa · 07/02/2024 17:18

Thanks to a commercial many years ago, it’s Jif lemon day in our house.

Deadringer · 07/02/2024 17:20

Pancake Tuesday just makes more sense, as it was originally Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras (fat Tuesday).

CranfordScones · 07/02/2024 16:17

Pancake day means they can sell us something.

There's not much commercial potential in shriving.

You're joking aren't you, with all the collection baskets going round the church? Loads of money to be made.

Chipsahoy · 07/02/2024 17:21

It’s pancake day, it’s pancake day, it’s ppp pancake day

I didn't realise til now that the UK didn't call it Pancake Tuesday!

Me either! And I’ve lived in London for 15 years…mind blown.

All this time I’ve been referring to it as Pancake Tuesday have people been thinking it’s weird and just not saying anything? My own English husband has never commented on it.

Pan not hot enough? The first one is for practice anyway 🙂

Yep, the tester pancake.

HiGunny · 07/02/2024 17:24

Pancake Tuesday for us as well in Ireland. It was the only day of the year that we had pancakes when I was young so I used to gorge myself 😆 And it was butter, Jif lemon and sugar on them. Some jam instead if you were being fancy but never chocolate spread or Nutella.

I grew up in a vicarage with a vicar, are active Christians, will participate in lent by giving something up etc ..we still call it pancake day 😁

We'll be having fluffy American pancakes, maple syrup, crispy bacon and strawberries and blueberries! 🥞

This is so wrong!

You can’t have American pancakes on pancake day!

ColleenDonaghy · 07/02/2024 17:24

I knew about haitch, gotten, Mummy/Many for adults, Halloween, Santa/Santa but who knew Pancake Tuesday was Irish! Another one for the list. OP my grandparents would be well over 100 by now and they said Pancake Tuesday. Just as you think you can't learn any more on MN!

fuckssaaaaake · 07/02/2024 16:03

Not if it's a crepe it isn't

Amazing. This deserves far more credit than it received.

Marmite27 · 07/02/2024 15:58

Pancake day or Shrove Tuesday, never Pancake Tuesday!

This!

Googi · 07/02/2024 17:28

My very Catholic Irish granny called it Pancake Day

PuppyMonkey · 07/02/2024 17:29

I prefer a dropped scone anyway. Grin

Either Pancake day or Shrove Tuesday, not pancake Tuesday.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 07/02/2024 16:00

Pancake day is a very special day for greedy atheists, and I will not let you take that away from us.

😄😄😄😄

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 07/02/2024 17:32

We’re religion-free. We like pancakes. We have pancake day. I know the tradition behind it but it’s changed as society has changed, which is what happens with traditions. Christians are free to call it Shrove Tuesday and mark the start of Lent, and anyone else is free just to enjoy pancake day. That shouldn’t affect Christians.

scrambledeggsandbeans · 07/02/2024 17:34

@KreedKafer I do call it st Stephens day because that's what it is
