To hate it being called pancake tuesday

Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

Well, unless you’re actually going to confession on the day, i.e. being shriven, then you’re unreasonable to insist that it’s called Shrove Tuesday. Pancake Day at least has the benefit of being an accurate description of what happens on the day.

CranfordScones · 07/02/2024 16:17

Pancake day means they can sell us something.

There's not much commercial potential in shriving.

idontlikealdi · 07/02/2024 16:17

i have never heard it called Pancake Tuesday.

Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Pancake day are all interchangeable in our house

scrambledeggsandbeans · 07/02/2024 16:17

I don't live in the UK I live in Europe. I stream English speaking stations on TV most from Ireland and I'm sure they advertised it a pancake tuesday. Each to their own.
It just irked me a little.

It’s the fourth day of lunar new year where I live . . . None of your shriving here!

DataBatman · 07/02/2024 16:21

There's 47 days between Shrove Tuesday and Easter Sunday, 40 days only takes you to Palm Sunday.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/02/2024 16:22

Pancake day means they can sell us something.

It might be stretching it a little to suggest flour, eggs and milk represent rampant consumerism and over-commercialising.

Deadringer · 07/02/2024 16:24

Also in Ireland and only ever heard it called pancake Tuesday, I suppose elderly or religious people might call it Shrove Tuesday though. Pancake day doesn't have much of a ring to it. I bloody hate it because I don't really like pancakes, and I spend absolutely ages making them and they are wolfed down in seconds.

phoenixrosehere · 07/02/2024 16:24

Have been calling it Pancake Day for years and from three different countries.

Does make me nostalgic for IHOP (International House of Pancakes) in the States where they have Pancake month instead of Pancake Day, where they offer all you can eat for $4.99. Not sure what the price is now, but they still make the best buttermilk pancakes and I make them very close to that.

The American-Style pre-made mixes are just wrong in so many ways and woefully inadequate.

The lenten fast excludes sundays

steff13 · 07/02/2024 16:27

You can eat pancakes any day.

Mittens1717 · 07/02/2024 16:27

I'm Catholic and always call it Pancake Tuesday, won't however be eating meat on Wednesday

Well how very dare people in a different country have a different name for something, how irksome for you. We will try to do batter. Sorry, better.

Mittens1717 · 07/02/2024 16:28

I'm also Irish so maybe it's an Irish thing?!

Ilikeblacklabsandicannotlie · 07/02/2024 16:29

Grew up in a church-going household and it was always referred to as Pancake Day or Fat Tuesday (grandmother) unless specially in a church context when going to burn last year's palms.

I wouldn’t worry about that - nobody calls it Pancake Tuesday around here. To clarify, here being England for me. Not sure what the tv stations in Ireland say.
It is referred to as Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday. And pancake day will be the one in advertising as it’s all about making pancakes. It’s only really about Shrove Tuesday if you are more religious I think. Plenty of non religious people might try to “give something up for lent” but the idea of more generally fasting is not one that’s widely done here.

RowanMayfair · 07/02/2024 16:31

I don't really care about shrove or lent. I do care about pancakes. It's pancake day in our house. I've been calling it that since I was old enough to talk so I'd say that's long enough to be a tradition.

AuntieMarys · 07/02/2024 16:34

Pancake day here though I never make them

Carolenarua · 07/02/2024 16:35

It's called Pancake Tuesday in Ireland, mystery solved. Different countries call it different things. I found it interesting the different names things are called when I lived in the U.K and further afield. Wouldn't life be dull if everything was the same everywhere.... Enjoy your pancakes 🥞

It's always been Pancake Tuesday in Ireland. We did the ashes business etc when i was young, but it was always Pancake Tuesday.

13Bastards · 07/02/2024 16:37

Nah, it's pancake day in this atheist house mate. You call it what you want though.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 07/02/2024 16:37

Never heard it called Pancake Tuesday. Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday

InMySpareTime · 07/02/2024 16:37

It's pancake day here (a La Maid Marian) because of the traditional song:

MaryShelley1818 · 07/02/2024 16:38

I'm an atheist so of course it's Pancake Day here!

I like lemon and sugar, DH likes Nutella, DS likes ham and cheese and DD would like one of each!

ganglion · 07/02/2024 16:38

You're so right OP. It's not Pancake Tuesday, it's Pancake Day (yey!).
