Did my comment deserve ridicule?

Have name changed as anyone in the group I posted in will know it’s me if they see this.

Basically a band I love have just reunited and the fans have been eagerly awaiting tour dates. One date has just been announced in London. I posted in the comments that I was excited for the gig but hoping they put on another show maybe in central London.

The comment received a mixture of laughing and angry faces and endless comments such as “Typical Londoner” and “What about people who live miles away from London!” Etc

I replied saying I was not suggesting that all dates should be in London, what I meant was if there was a gig in central London it would be easier for people from all over the UK to get to. I continued getting harassed over it so I deleted the comment but some arsehole screenshot it and reposted it so the comments and laughing continued.

Im so upset by the whole thing it’s put me off going to the gig at all and it’s ruined the reunion for me, I know it sounds daft but it has really got to me. I feel totally ridiculed.

I’ve just told DH about it and he laughed and said he’s not surprised I’m getting stick for it!? Was it really such a bad thing to say?!

they have rather odd sense of humours

what exactly did you post?

ZekeZeke · 27/01/2024 18:09

Stop taking things personally.
It's ridiculous that you are contemplating not going to a much loved band because of keyboard warriors.
You need to toughen up and stay away from the keyboard.

SoDoffYourHat · 27/01/2024 18:10

Your comment was - well, nothing remarkable at all. Sounds like your friends were looking for an argument.

I say this as a northerner who is often annoyed by London-centric comments - but yours wasn't one.

hopscotcher · 27/01/2024 18:10

It doesn't seem particularly ridicule-worthy, and a bit much to screenshot and keep on about it. Is it a group of your friends?

OP you do come across as very thin skinned indeed. I don’t think this group is for you

DrCoconut · 27/01/2024 18:11

Well, central London is not easy for people from all over the UK to get to. It's too far away for anything but a real bucket list type special event that's not on elsewhere for me. But there's no need for the behaviour you're describing, its possible to simply scroll on if you disagree.

No it’s the band’s fan page

Well, this being mumsnet, your post will probably be ridiculed too 😅

AgnesX · 27/01/2024 18:12

I live in Glasgow.....so no, it's not that sensible....for us or anyone in the northern half of the country. Somewhere like Birmingham would be better.

Are you referring to Air by any chance, because I'm monumentally pissed off that the rest of the UK has been left behind in favour of sodding London.

.

StressyMcStressFace · 27/01/2024 18:12

Given your sensitivity to comments from Internet strangers, I'm a little worried that you're looking for opinions from AIBU on mumsnet 😳

Barrenfieldoffucks · 27/01/2024 18:13

Tbh given so much is London centric when something isn't I can see why your comment made people laugh.

Loubelle70 · 27/01/2024 18:14

Ive been on band forums...some people are just dicks.
They've nothing better to do.
Nothing wrong with saying wish was nearer to you..ive said it before... sometimes the bands are linked to these forums and take note at times.
I actually had a message from Nick caves crew to say he was planning to tour near me when i was 😔 at other dates inaccessible to me. I was made up. So...fuck these people.

DataBatman · 27/01/2024 18:15

Not sure if I'm reading this right? They've announced one date IN London and you're hoping for another one as it's not central enough for you?

notjustthecandle · 27/01/2024 18:15

have you just started two other threads
1 about arranging a reunion
2 about someone saying it sounded boring

OrigamiOwls · 27/01/2024 18:15

There's no need for quite the level of ridicule, but also the rest of the UK does get a bit fed up with so many things being London centric. There is a whole country outside of the M25, which is frequently forgotten about.
You've already got one gig on your doorstep, look on the bright side.

Cheepcheepcheep · 27/01/2024 18:16

Tbf this is like when I lived in Croydon and my friends in Z1/2 used to joke about me living in Surrey/France 😂 I wouldn’t give it much headspace!

Username917778 · 27/01/2024 18:16

Well yeah, we don't all live in London. They are doing one date in London and you've asked for them to do another date in London lol...

steff13 · 27/01/2024 18:16

I have noticed that a lot of people make superfluous comments on the internet and I kind of don't get why they do that. You can say something completely factual like, "Most people are right-handed," and someone will inevitably come along and say, "not all people are right-handed." Well true it's completely unnecessary to the original comment but they seem to have an obsessive need to be part of the conversation.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 27/01/2024 18:16

Given that, no London is not easy for everyone to get to. It would be easier to be in the middle of the island so somewhere just south of the Scottish Borders, or in England Birmingham. It’s terribly London-centric and worth laughing at!!!

SoDoffYourHat · 27/01/2024 18:17

It is easier relative to outer London!

CustardySergeant · 27/01/2024 18:18

I can see why they reacted that way. The band are doing one gig in London and you said if they do another gig you hope it will be in central London.

DelphineFox · 27/01/2024 18:18

No it's not a silly thing to say. People who do the giggling twat emoji at things that aren't funny are just not very bright. Don't worry.

Lemonyyellow · 27/01/2024 18:18

So the band are already performing in London and you want them to do another show in a different bit of London? I suppose if they haven’t announced any other uk locations you can why people might like another gig to be in a different part of the uk and think it’s ridiculous you would want there to be 2 in London?

berksandbeyond · 27/01/2024 18:18

So the gig is in outer London and you wanted another one in central London? Yeah that’s silly, sorry!

Knackeredhamster · 27/01/2024 18:20

Oh god some fan pages are bloody nuts.
I swear half of them don't even like the artist or band they're following.

Absolutely brings out the worst in people. Such one upmanship at times.
