Did my comment deserve ridicule?

Have name changed as anyone in the group I posted in will know it’s me if they see this.

Basically a band I love have just reunited and the fans have been eagerly awaiting tour dates. One date has just been announced in London. I posted in the comments that I was excited for the gig but hoping they put on another show maybe in central London.

The comment received a mixture of laughing and angry faces and endless comments such as “Typical Londoner” and “What about people who live miles away from London!” Etc

I replied saying I was not suggesting that all dates should be in London, what I meant was if there was a gig in central London it would be easier for people from all over the UK to get to. I continued getting harassed over it so I deleted the comment but some arsehole screenshot it and reposted it so the comments and laughing continued.

Im so upset by the whole thing it’s put me off going to the gig at all and it’s ruined the reunion for me, I know it sounds daft but it has really got to me. I feel totally ridiculed.

I’ve just told DH about it and he laughed and said he’s not surprised I’m getting stick for it!? Was it really such a bad thing to say?!

There are about 57 million people in this country that don't live in London, so it's easy to see why some of them are a bit miffed when London is always seen as the centre of the universe. That said, bullying the OP for her comment was a needlessly twattish thing to do.

notawittyname1954 · 27/01/2024 20:41

Don't let it put you off going to the gig. It certainly isnt a comment you made worthy of being screen shot and ridiculed. I hope the band does gigs all over for all their fans to be able to get to. It's an expensive business with travel and hotels if necessary. I don't live that far outside London but still costs quite a lot to go to a gig if you don't want to drive in.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/01/2024 20:48

I do agree with your DH I'm afraid. However people who bully people on the internet are dickheads

JaneAustensHeroine · 27/01/2024 20:53

Interested to know what’s considered ‘outer London’ here?

Trulyme · 27/01/2024 20:53

Your comment was a bit silly.

They are coming to London but you hope that they also go to a different part of London, just to make it slightly easier for you.

I can understand if you had posted “I hope the come to Edinburgh/Plymouth/Leeds too” as that would be easier for people to get to in those areas.

Don’t let it worry you though, everyone would have forgotten your comment soon enough.

3luckystars · 27/01/2024 20:54

One less person looking for tickets! Don’t let them win.

Butterflyrainbow12 · 27/01/2024 20:55

Anyone figure out the band yet?

GotMooMilk · 27/01/2024 20:55

Don’t let it stop you going as no one will know it’s you!

But suggesting more dates in central london will be ‘easier for everyone’ is a very Londoner thing to say….

gamerchick · 27/01/2024 20:55

DataBatman · 27/01/2024 18:15

Not sure if I'm reading this right? They've announced one date IN London and you're hoping for another one as it's not central enough for you?

That's why they're ripping the piss.

You need a thicker skin OP.

Pollyannamex · 27/01/2024 20:57

You haven’t clarified your comment but if the band are playing at Wembley or the 02 maybe, and you posted asking for another central London date then yes, I would roll my eyes at you.
But it does sound like people are taking it too far.

nandinos · 27/01/2024 21:05

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 27/01/2024 20:09

@Kalevala I'm the opposite - love a visit to London, Bristol doesn't really do it for me. Never really check for it when I'm looking at events.

I love London too but it's too expensive these days. About a decade ago I could do it all for ~£100. Hotel, train, not to mention the ticket itself.

Wages have stagnated and prices have shot up since then. It's nearly impossible to get cheap tickets (if they exist) for popular gigs, and then train + accommodation can be double that.

I have no idea why PP suggested Bristol (it's not a particularly central location) but even Birmingham (which isn't very far away!) would be more tolerable. Or Manchester/Liverpool.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 27/01/2024 21:05

You didn’t say anything ridiculous. People love a moan about the focus on London. Though I see why a Londoner saying another concert in London would be beneficial to everyone in the UK would get people rolling their eyes slightly just as it fits in with a view some have of Londoners. I think though you’ve taken it far too personally. Don’t let it put you off going to a concert.

Theunamedcat · 27/01/2024 21:07

They sound like they have zero life if they screenshot an innocuous post and ridicule it over and over again seriously do they ever get out of their bedroom

Maybe find a more mature fan page or accept you have outgrown the band

Fwiw when it comes to travelling to London I find it way easier to go central and I'm in the Midlands can't even go on the train direct anymore

savethatkitty · 27/01/2024 21:07

You need a thicker skin. Did it deserve ridicule, probably not. But everyone is a keyboard warrior so toughen up!

These people are strangers to you - who cares what they say.

DahliaMacNamara · 27/01/2024 21:07

Are you not used to hanging out on those kind of pages? People can be absolute wankers. It says more about them than it does about you.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 27/01/2024 21:08

@nandinos she mentioned Bristol because I said London is easy from Devon - obv Bristol is closer/cheaper

TrickorTreacle · 27/01/2024 21:17

Butterflyrainbow12 · 27/01/2024 20:55

Anyone figure out the band yet?

It's the French band called Air. They had a few moderate hits in the late 90s such as Sexy Boy and Kelly Watch The Stars.

@Gladness haven't come back to this thread though yet after their 2nd post.

MrsCobbit · 27/01/2024 21:18

Are you normally so precious?

WimpoleHat · 27/01/2024 21:23

To be fair - if, say, someone is doing a show in Hyde Park, it’s easy enough for people to get in from all Home Counties to see it by train plus a shortish tube. Wembley? Bit of a pain if you’re from Kent or Essex as the M25 is a nightmare. Croydon? Same difficulties from Beds, Herts and Bucks. So I can see what the OP means here.

ToRecordOnlyWater · 27/01/2024 21:26

To be honest the pile-on may be coming from fans who are far away from London and will be attending the London date at huge expense (I’ve travelled all over for shows, and last year a show that had a £5 ticket price, a reunion show for my favourite band playing a tiny bar called Black Heart in Camden) and after a hotel room, train tickets, tube fare and food while we were there (basic food like a Greggs, nothing fancy!) it ended up costing almost £300 for myself and two other people. It’s certainly pricey compared to travelling to Cardiff (I live in the Midlands), Sheffield or even Manchester.

i imagine most of the comments were people working out what their expenses will be, annoyed that it’ll be easily accessible for you but you’re asking for another London show that they’ll assume you want as it’s slightly closer to you.

If I’d seen the comment I’d have rolled my eyes and found it a bit annoying but no way would I have been piling on you, some people are just negative and bitter and being behind a keyboard makes it a lot easier for people to be more mean than they’d ever dare be to your face. Ignore them and enjoy your show! Don’t let it stop you. People will always find a reason to be horrible.

Really?
The photo shows the Royal Albert Hall. Not quite Central, but not super far away?
The other date is in the Coliseum as well (although not on the FB page).
Can't find the OP's comment but really if this is true I can see why people piled on. How many more Central London dates did OP want??

Firefly1987 · 27/01/2024 21:29

Just fan behaviour really, they are desperate for tickets and it's always disappointing if a band is only doing venues far away. Not the same situation exactly but I remember being on a fan page for Boyzone and this one woman had tickets to 8 dates and I took it upon myself to call her greedy and say "what if someone can't even go once because you've taken so many tickets?!" and rightly people jumped on me for that and said she can go as many times as she likes! So I said next time they do a concert I'm gonna buy as many dates as I can so there's none left for you, how do you like that?! 😆in my defence I was only about 17 at the time. She just said she wouldn't mind that at all and wished me luck!

Twonewcats · 27/01/2024 21:29

So you're upset because you got ridiculed on a fan page, then told your husband who also took the piss, then hope for the opposite answer on AIBU?
Is there anything at all that'll help you stop being upset, because it seems to me that it's not actually a huge deal, but it's becoming more and more massive the more you dig your heels in 😳

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/01/2024 21:31

Sounds like the Wildhearts' FB page. If it is, better to not engage with them. Chances are it'll be cancelled within a fortnight like 90% of their gigs in any case.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 27/01/2024 21:35

Don’t let it get you down op! Some people just love a fight on the internet. Go to the gig and have a brilliant time.

London is the centre of the universe anyway, we all know that! (I live in London 😈).
