Did my comment deserve ridicule?

Have name changed as anyone in the group I posted in will know it’s me if they see this.

Basically a band I love have just reunited and the fans have been eagerly awaiting tour dates. One date has just been announced in London. I posted in the comments that I was excited for the gig but hoping they put on another show maybe in central London.

The comment received a mixture of laughing and angry faces and endless comments such as “Typical Londoner” and “What about people who live miles away from London!” Etc

I replied saying I was not suggesting that all dates should be in London, what I meant was if there was a gig in central London it would be easier for people from all over the UK to get to. I continued getting harassed over it so I deleted the comment but some arsehole screenshot it and reposted it so the comments and laughing continued.

Im so upset by the whole thing it’s put me off going to the gig at all and it’s ruined the reunion for me, I know it sounds daft but it has really got to me. I feel totally ridiculed.

I’ve just told DH about it and he laughed and said he’s not surprised I’m getting stick for it!? Was it really such a bad thing to say?!

There's no need for quite the level of ridicule, but also the rest of the UK does get a bit fed up with so many things being London centric. There is a whole country outside of the M25, which is frequently forgotten about.
You've already got one gig on your doorstep, look on the bright side.

Rubbish. Are you from Manchester?
This is a thing that has been picked up somewhere and people have picked it up and mindlessly ran it out their gobs at regular intervals.

Most gigs have a south (london)
A middle (Manchester)
A north (Glasgow)
As a minimum
Only very few do a single UK date which of course is going to be the capital. They aren't likely to stick it in Inverness.

For anyone that does not live in London, your comment was daft. For people who live in London, they probably understood it completely. But look at it this way, if the only concert they were ever going to do was in Manchester. And you really wanted to go. And someone from the east part of Manchester posted a comment "Oh why couldn't it be in Central Manchester!". What would your reaction be, as you contemplate travelling there from London???

If i was travelling from London, central Manchester would be much easier. I actually live in Glasgow and central Manchester would be much easier.
Central is always easier unless you actually live in that city near thd venue.

BooBooDoodle · 28/01/2024 19:35

I live up North and to go to anything like that in London costs roughly the same as a week away abroad, I’d rather go abroad! I can see the amusement. The country revolves around the ruddy place and the rest of country doesn’t get much of a look in. I think you’re being a little sensitive. You have a gig fairly locally in my opinion which is a lot more than the rest of the country get 🤣

Matildalamp · 28/01/2024 19:53

I live in Shetland, so getting to central London is not easy for me. But I’ll say this, if I were travelling to London for something like this it would be significantly easier to get to central London than Greater London. Transport to London for those of us who live far from the city generally takes us to central London. I absolutely get what the OP meant.

I don't know about OP, but mine in her position would be "so would I, it would make my travel a lot easier if I didn't need to organise a complicated onward journeyfrom the main Manchester station"

EmeraldA129 · 29/01/2024 09:41

It’s not a bad thing to have said & didn’t deserve ridicule… but YABU IMO if you are seriously considering not going to something you really wanted to go to because of some bitchy comments from anonymous people online. Go to the gig - you know you want to - and have a brilliant night with real life people you actually care about.

Freakinfraser · 29/01/2024 09:49

Surprised you can’t see why folks are amused, you live in London, your fave band has announced a gig in London, you can get to it easily enough by public transport, likely within about half an hour to 45 mins, and you posted Saying you basically would like them to have a gig even closer to your home.

still go, no one is going to be looking out for you, and don’t be thin skinned. But can you really not see why folks are taking the mic? It’s hardly excessive travel

Morgysmum · 29/01/2024 09:57

I don't think it deserved the comments, but as some one who doesn't live in London, it is frustrating when all bands seem to have 1 or 2 gigs in London, but none anywhere else. It's expensive ti get to London I don't drive, so have to take a train which is expensive. Or coach, which would require an overnight stay, which is eye watering expensive.
There was a Gun's N Roses concert at Tottenham stadium. I did look at getting to it, it looked OK, to get to on the tube.
I didn't go to London, as they had a gig in Glasgow, which still isn't close to me. (I live in Sheffield) but I haven't been to Scotland, so decided I would do some site seeing, before the gig, I did stay overnight, but it was more affordable than London.
On the edge of London, was maybe cheaper for the band, as I guess with all the clean air charges, it probably puts a band, with all the stuff it wou probably cost them a fortune in charges, less central, is probably a cost saving measure.

HaitchOar · 27/01/2024 22:45

I’m just making the point that the greater London area is very big. If you live in Coulsdon for example, and a gig is on in Alexandra Palace, that’s about 2.5 hours door to door on public transport. Driving is not much better; on a weeknight that would be 2 hours according to Google Maps.

Coulsdon to Alexander palace is just over an hour on public transport

Nanaof1 · 29/01/2024 10:04

Gladness · 27/01/2024 18:11

No it’s the band’s fan page

They are just angry that some of them won't be able to go see the band. Get your tickets and enjoy the band. Don't let some little nothing twats ruin something you love.

Cornishclio · 29/01/2024 10:23

I live in the South West so London is not easy or cheap to get to. There is already loads of stuff going on there so I am not surprised you got some angry comments if the group are located all over the country. If

HollyKnight · 29/01/2024 11:26

It wouldn't be, though. What would be easier is if gigs were better spread about throughout the UK. More shows in London aren't going to help the fans in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

timesaretight · 29/01/2024 12:33

It can be difficult for fans to see gigs, many travel miles, and you want two close to you.

Maddy70 · 29/01/2024 14:17

Well it was a bit of a silly comment They will have fans all over the place not just thats convenient to you. But taking online comments so personally is very ott. How on earth do you cope with mumsnet?
And to say you wouldnt go because of these is batshit.
Yours isnt a normal response. They were dicks but i wouldn't have given it a second thought

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 29/01/2024 15:46

I'm not sure I understand - this band have already set a date in London, you posted saying I hope they do another date ALSO in London and then tried to dress it up like it's easier for fans to travel to London than anywhere else?

So 2 gigs in London and none elsewhere instead of, I dunno, 1 in London and 1 in Glasgow?

If that's right I can kind of see why they were having a laugh at you. If that's not it you're going to have to come back and explain what you're talking about.

(Although I will concede that the whole exchange sounds juvenile, esp. the screenshotting and sharing)

tuvamoodyson · 29/01/2024 15:53

Well, I’m 400 miles away, so…🤷‍♀️

Freakinfraser · 29/01/2024 09:59

Ah I think I chose a strike day on Citymapper by accident, oops. It’s still showing as 95 mins for other days though, if aiming to get there for 7ish. I presume the 2 hour drive Google suggested is still correct though.

FarmGirl78 · 30/01/2024 11:02

So you live in London, they're doing a gig in London, but it's not quite in London enough for your liking. And you want those of us in Manchester, Leeds, Swansea, Glasgow to be grateful for your idea because it's easier for us? Give over you dafty!

We don’t know she lives in London she’s never said so. Everyone has assumed that.

asdfgasdfg · 19/02/2024 20:50

my daughter lives in Nottingham, if I can't get tickets for a show in London (I live on the distict line and have a freedom pass) I book one in Nottingham and stay with her for the night, occassionally she'll want to come too. I get a coach each way
