Is it ok to drink wine every eve?? I have a glass , sometimes 2 every evening and I love it, it makes me happy. Dh says mental health more important so if it makes me happy I should just do it. I am a healthy 40 something with a professional career. I just love wine.

I don't think it's the worst thing you could do but it's not great. I agree if it makes you very happy, that's a good thing in this life. I used to drink a glass or two of an evening. I noticed that sometimes I'd be half cut, sometimes I'd end up having more and I got fat. It didn't feel good to me.

I'm still fat but feel very much better for not drinking in the week. However, I now drink a bottle or two on a Saturday so am no healthier.

Grimmz · 04/01/2024 22:05

Honestly a glass of wine a day is fine.

Dont smoke, am not overweight, eat ok , this is my pleasure in life. I dont eat much chocolate and i just love wine,
I will however start with 1 day off a week for now.

Ah fuck it. Keep at it.

HardcoreLadyType · 04/01/2024 22:06

2.5 bottles of wine each week is about 25 units per week. Women are advised to drink no more than 14 units per week - that’s about 1.5 bottles.

Advice is also not to drink every day.

This advice is easy to find online.

I’m not sure what you want from this thread. Just because a lot of people drink more than the medical guidance doesn’t mean it’s a good thing to do.

ManateeFair · 04/01/2024 22:06

Mumsnet is absolutely the worst place to ask opinions on alcohol because the general consensus on here bears no relation to reality. In Mumsnet world, if you have more than one glass of wine a week you’re an alcoholic.

In the real world, loads of people drink a glass of wine every night and are perfectly fine. In plenty of European countries, including ones that have far lower rates of alcoholism than the UK, it is entirely normal to have a glass or two every evening.

MrsQTip · 04/01/2024 22:07

What answers were you expecting OP ? This is Mumsnet where even a sniff of some spilled sweet sherry on the Vicars cassock would send you into a spiral of addiction

All2Well · 04/01/2024 22:07

It sounds like dependency to me and not healthy at all.

NorthernSpirit · 04/01/2024 22:07

Mamabear2424 · 04/01/2024 21:36

I make sure I don't exceed 2.5 bottles a week

2.5 bottles of wine a week = 22.5 - 25 units of alcohol.

It’s recommended women consume upto 14 units a week. So yes - you are drinking too much.

Vettrianofan · 04/01/2024 22:07

Drinking wine every night would feel like a chore to me. I prefer herbal teas, camomile just before bed or a sleep teabag.

MrsQTip · 04/01/2024 22:07

@ManateeFair yep 🤣🤣🤣

Growlybear83 · 04/01/2024 22:09

Of course it's not a problem to have one or two glasses of wine a night if you enjoy it!

Tilllly · 04/01/2024 22:09

Could you do alcohol free wine, or a nice soft drink a night or two a week?

fixies · 04/01/2024 22:09

Surely it's better to drink one or two glasses a day than drink a whole bottle in a night - as I'm sure lots of people do!

I don't think there is a thing wrong with it.

i dont think its a slippery slope as i have been like this for years and have not increased it, i am asking to get a general honest view out there!

To have had a glass every night for years can’t be good surely? I’d say cut back

Crikeyalmighty · 04/01/2024 22:11

I have half a bottle usually 3 nights a week and at least 4 nights clear

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 04/01/2024 22:12

Alcohol free wine's rank though 😁

Vinrouge4 · 04/01/2024 22:14

I was the same until I reluctantly cut down to only drinking at the weekend after having high cholesterol. Can’t believe how much better I slept, fewer hot flushes, less arthritis and lost weight because wine makes me hungry. I’m less bothered even at the weekend now.

bakewellbride · 04/01/2024 22:15

@ManateeFair I'm sorry but how can that be true? I've found mumsnet to be the total opposite when it comes to alcohol complete with lots of pro drinking in pregnancy arguments. I'm teetotal and feel like a total outsider on mumsnet where regular drinking is seen as 'the done thing'. Really interesting you have found the opposite to be true.

If op identifies as a man she can have 21 units at week!! 😂

Winnading · 04/01/2024 22:18

I've done similar. I drank two glasses of wine every night.
I didnt increase, I didnt go mad, I got fat.
I quit drinking every night, only drink weekends and lost some weight.

Then the menopause happened and I got fat again. Wish I'd kept the drinking.

Jennywren2000 · 04/01/2024 22:19

I think it totally depends. My mum has had one glass every night for as long as I can remember, never more. She’s slim, healthy & in her 70s. Still goes running! For her, it’s not a slippery slope.
She really enjoys it & is pretty healthy in every other way, so I’m not sure if it matters if this is your only vice.

2under4 · 04/01/2024 22:20

I wouldn't worry about this one jot tbh. Seems the only enjoyment anyone allows themselves any more is "going for a run" 🙄 Enjoy yourself OP!

For you it may not be a slippery slope but for many many others it absolutely is.

Motherofpearlxoxo · 04/01/2024 22:21

You are not being unreasonable but it is definitely a slippery slope. I used to be half a bottle, then a bottle, then a bottle and few gins!! Go steady and cut back now is my advice because it just gets harder and harder and your sleep will benefit immensely from cutting back to just a few nights! xxx
