Is it ok to drink wine every eve?? I have a glass , sometimes 2 every evening and I love it, it makes me happy. Dh says mental health more important so if it makes me happy I should just do it. I am a healthy 40 something with a professional career. I just love wine.

I think red wine is particularly morish. Perhaps because of the acidity, it can feel as though the flavour doesn't tire.

I can drink way too much red but never crave any other alcoholic drinks. 🍷

JanglingJack · 04/01/2024 23:10

In what way does it make you happy?

You say you love it. What do you love about it?

Do you drink red, white, prosecco?

Genuinely interested.

Chilled white preferred.

Unusual because I usually prefer red - chilled which is against the law.

Love Prosecco too, but after a few evenings of it, I'm back on the red.

I like the taste, and it being chilled. I never drink during the day, but a glass of wine is just right an hour before bed. I like a gin and tonic and a few cocktails, but I wouldn't want one every evening. I feel a need for coffee if I have to get up early - wanting a glass of wine doesn't feel like that.

1 glass of red wine can be beneficial (depending on the size, obviously). Sticking to that, he’s probably right.

It is rather simple to find out if your drinking is becoming problematic: Stop for, say, three months. If you can do that just fine, you don't have a problem and probably lost weight and feel better. The trick is to find out why you drink. Do you like the taste or are you relying a bit too much on it for winding down?

Purplehatty · 04/01/2024 23:29

Icantbedoingwithit · 04/01/2024 21:43

If you have to do it every night, it’s a habit. The fact you are asking on here shows you have been questioning it. Nobody needs to drink every day. You drink because it makes you happy. You are getting something from it that you crave otherwise you wouldn’t bother.

It really is a slippery slope. Been there.

I agree.

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 04/01/2024 23:29

I have a couple of Malibu and cokes per night. Pretty weak ones. I just love the taste.

I don't need them. I sometimes don't finish the second.

I just like them, in the same way I like my morning tea first thing.

If I ever needed one, I would stop.

Catmads · 04/01/2024 23:31

@Mamabear2424 Just some thoughts.

You said you buy 3 bottles of wine a week, do you always have wine in at home?

How would you feel if you didn't have any in for some reason, would you go out in pouring rain to get some?

Do you actively avoid events in the evening where you wouldn't be able to drink?

sunflowerdaisyrose · 04/01/2024 23:32

I drink 1 or 2 glasses most nights. I'm a healthy weight, exercise a lot, eat ok, sleep well and feel fine. I don't drink coffee or tea. I also don't have a problem not having one. I have stopped for a month a couple of times - i did miss it, but didn't find it hard - I felt no different and lost no weight!

I naturally don't drink a couple of nights a week as out at various activities. I did drink and eat too much in December so this month I'm only having wine at weekends as would like to lose just a few lb to get back to my normal.

I'd try and have 2 alcohol free nights a week but wouldn't change much else.

Serv · 04/01/2024 23:36

I usually have a glass of wine or two over the course of an evening. Not more though, and I usually have at least two weeks in every five when I don't drink for four (sometimes five) consecutive nights.

I eat very few UPFs, get fresh air and exercise and eat healthily, so I try to keep a balance. No wine would be great, but I love wine, so I drink it like this! Grin

Gotsomedebt · 04/01/2024 23:38

Sorry, it IS a slippery slope. Habit leads to addiction.

My mother started off like you, 1 - 2 glasses a night for years and years without increase. Then, it crept up slowly without her even noticing.

Now, she's dependent on two bottles of wine a day, every day. And it's fucking everything up for everyone.

IBE45 · 04/01/2024 23:38

Mamabear2424 · 04/01/2024 21:44

i dont think its a slippery slope as i have been like this for years and have not increased it, i am asking to get a general honest view out there!

It definitely is a slippery slope and what happens when something bad happens. I really hope it doesn't, but it's reality for many of us. People suffer bereavements, lose jobs, long term illness etc. If something like this were to happen a daily drinking habit can escalate very quickly.

Drinking 2. 5 bottles a week is around 25 units, I believe the recommended amount is 14. So youre not far off double. Additionally, if you're drinking every day your liver never gets a chance to recuperate. I'd definitely recommend at least 2 consecutive days off.

WhatWhereWho · 04/01/2024 23:45

What would happen if you had to go for a while without? If you did not drink for a few weeks would it affect you?

Elphame · 04/01/2024 23:49

Mamabear2424 · 04/01/2024 21:40

thank god someone out there also has 2 per evening, i was feeling a freak

I do too and have done for years. It hasn't crept up, in fact it's actually gone down.

I can and do skip the occasional night without really noticing the lack but there are virtually no soft drinks left now without sweeteners and all the alcohol free wines are pretty rank.

Axlcat · 04/01/2024 23:53

I think the question you need to ask is how would you feel if you couldn’t have it - and would you struggle to go without it? If the answer is that you’d find it difficult, then I would advise that it’s too much and you potentially have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.

As others have said, it’s easy to start with a small amount not very often and for it to creep up and up as your tolerance increases so it might be worth trying to go without for a while and seeing how you feel.

I can absolutely recommend a fabulous book that helped me examine my relationship with alcohol - Alan Carr Easy Way to Control Alcohol. Worth a read with an open mind.

Remaker · 04/01/2024 23:56

I’ve gone through stages where I drink wine every night and others where I drink very little. My barometer was always can I stop drinking for a period of time without it bothering me? If I was wondering if it’s ok I’d just have some nights off and see how I feel.

I think ideally having a couple of nights a week alcohol free is ideal, and also medically recommended. I am in my 50s and aim to only drink on weekends now.

DisabledDemon · 04/01/2024 23:57

Well, the French say that a day without wine is like a day without sunshine.

Yes but they don’t drink like brits

winterrabbit · 05/01/2024 00:00

DisabledDemon, is that really a saying?

Onelifeonly · 05/01/2024 00:02

Aren't women meant to stick to 14 units or less a week? Or has that advice changed? Units doesn't mean glasses. I think there are 14 units in a bottle of wine.

And definitely some alcohol free days. Your health can be affected by alcohol without you being obviously addicted/ dependent or noticing any ill effects.

Sounds like too much to me. I drank every day pretty much as a student but that was a long time ago.

Onelifeonly · 05/01/2024 00:05

Alcohol guidelinesIt's recommended to drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week, spread across 3 days or more. That's around 6 medium (175ml) glasses of wine, or 6 pints of 4% beer.
There's no completely safe level of drinking, but sticking within these guidelines lowers your risk of harming your health. Try using Alcohol Change UK's unit calculator to work out how many units you drink and watch our .

Unit calculator | Alcohol Change UK

Use the unit calculator to find out how many units are in a particular drink, or to check how much you're drinking.

OooohAhhhh · 05/01/2024 00:10

I have one glass each night, but I don't really exceed the recommended unit intake per week. Recommended weekly allowance is 14 units for women, some bottles of wine are 9/10 units depending on strength. What are the units of each bottle? I'd say 2.5 bottles is a bit too much yes, can you knock it down to say just under 2 bottles a week? So say if you got a bootle of wine that was 8 units, just under 2 bottles would be within range of the 14 units per week.

CandleInAJamJar · 05/01/2024 00:10

Stop worrying and enjoy it op. On here anything beyond a thimble of sherry at Christmas means you're a raging alcoholic.
They also like to throw data sheets and sources around to prove their expertise.

Serv · 05/01/2024 00:13

... just to agree with a pp, I also used to drink more and my wine consumption has greatly reduced over the years. I'm far more health conscious these days. My love of a glass of wine only goes so far. It CAN be a slippery slope, but not for everyone.
