Is it ok to drink wine every eve?? I have a glass , sometimes 2 every evening and I love it, it makes me happy. Dh says mental health more important so if it makes me happy I should just do it. I am a healthy 40 something with a professional career. I just love wine.

Well done! When you have your next class of wine, it might feel like a treat rather than a habit!

I think i got defensive as thought 1-2 glasses a night was not a problem, i am so embarrassed to think i have a problem!! I had a nice cup of yorkshire tea last night and a slab of christmas cake (probably more calories than the wine!!!!)

I have found zero beer a good tipple. Fools my brain and I now only drink high days and holidays.

pollymere · 09/01/2024 08:39

One thing I would say about my 0% gin and diet lemonade habit is that it's calorie free. You might find you lose weight by drinking less wine...although eating Christmas Cake might counteract that! 😂

More calories but less strain on your liver. Well done for biting the bullet.

I didn’t think the amount was that excessive (too much, yes, but easy enough to cut down) until the OP went into a blind panic at the idea of not drinking.

She posted (in order):

  1. My husband thinks it’s OK
  2. Where does 14 units come from anyway?
  3. Life’s boring and lacking sparkle without wine
  4. The French drink loads
  5. 14 units isn’t even accurate
  6. Other people have bad health habits (listed out).
  7. There are lots of bad things in life not just wine
  8. 14 units is an arbitrary made up number - she might as well smoke weed or shoot up heroin
  9. In Spain, she’d be under the limit
  10. Denmark has a different limit
  11. She’d never do dry January as it’s very bad for you health-wise to stop for a month then start again.

The sheer number of justifications and whataboutisms culminating in a claim that stopping drinking is bad for your health (which only applies if someone is physically dependant on alcohol) suggests to me that while some people may be able to drink this much without an issue, the OP already has a problematic relationship with alcohol.

Edited to say: In which case, not drinking two days a week means nothing as she is still alcohol reliant, just increasing the time between drinks.

Edited

@CrabbiesGingerBeer Agree with you, and it's not just the OP making these claims

Deep down, we all know that alcohol is bad for us. Many people like to pretend otherwise

NeedToChangeName · 09/01/2024 12:25

@Mamabear2424 well done for cutting down

It may assist you to know that cravings last approx 6 mins. So, if you're tempted to drink when you know you shouldn't, try to distract yourself for 6 mins and it should pass

Well done OP! Grin

I spotted this the other day and thought about this thread. Has anyone tried it? I can't see any reviews anywhere.

https://drydrinker.com/products/the-gentle-red-6-0-alc

I haven't tried that one but I'm pregnant and have been sampling some of the alcohol free Proseccos and beers. I don't normally drink either of them but the non- alcohol versions are good.

The Kylie pink prosecco and the Nosecco are both good. I also had an alcohol free wine from Waitrose which was quite good. They've got a much better selection in there. The Gordon's 0% gin is also very convincing with tonic and lemon. And we tried the FREEDAM beer from Aldi the other day and were seriously impressed. Tastes just like the real thing.

I'm normally a every night wine person but being pregnant again has made me question it. I actually found it hard to give up wine when I got pregnant which made me wonder whether my glass of wine every night was quite as harmless as I imagined.

Helen on Saturday kitchen recommend a alcohol free wine, this Saturday just gone. Even said it's hard to find nice tasting ones. It's with Jason Donovan. I think it might have been first course. I didn't pay much attention, I tend to fingers in ears and blah blah blah through the wines and the cocktails as I still get that - Oooh! Feeling 😭

The wines are generally pretty rubbish in comparison to real wine tbh. There are some just about passable (much better than a few years ago) but generally don't have the depth of flavour that wine does. The other drinks I've recommended seem to do a much better job of impersonating the alcoholic versions.

The Weakest Link

You know I said doing Mastermind was the scariest thing I’ve ever done? I take it back. Turns out The Weakest Link is way more terrifying.

Do you think you could stop for a week, a month, a year? How does the thought of that make you feel?

There’s your answer….

I don’t feel like this is the best indication that you have a problem, not liking the thought of it. The thought of giving up crisps for a year makes me feel sad, because I like eating crisps. I don’t think that means I have a crisp problem? I wouldn’t want to give up sex for a year either, but I’m not a sex addict.

I suppose if you feel genuine panic then it’s an issue.

Kendodd · 11/01/2024 18:51

I was on earlier saying I was going to be drinking a glass of red wine a night. Reading this thread I've revised that a bit, I will be drinking a smaller amount and not every night. I bought a very small sherry glass, about 75ml, I'm going to have that with my dinner, when I remember. I do enjoy it and started tonight.

I have no idea. Sorry, I forgot to mention that as not drinking anything alcohol, I have no desire whatsoever to consume an alcohol free wine. My Saturday Kitchen post was for those who were looking for one.

I like Yorkshire tea with 1 sugar at the moment. High juice, and pure grapefruit juice!

I hate aspartame and artificial sweetness 🤬

You have done so well OP. I hope that does not sound patronising. It can be incredibly hard to change the habits of a long time whether that is alcohol, chocolate or cigarettes etc. Amazing!

Well done you.

Some may poo poo this as "pah it's only two days" but what you have shown is that you are in control of the wine and not the wine is in control of you.

I hope you feel good and proud to be back in control!

I’m not convinced managing this once is quite changing a habit. It’s a good start OP, but why not reframe it to days with alcohol, rather than days without.

  • I’m going to drink 5 nights this week.

If no alcohol is the healthy default, then you’ve got lots to look forward to. Enhanced, rather than deprived.

keep it up.

Sinceyou · 14/01/2024 22:07

Well done OP. It dawned on me last year that my life can tend to revolve around social drinking. It wasn’t unusual for me to drink 5x a week catching up with different friends/colleagues.

So I cut down and am really happy with my alcohol reduction in the last couple of months (shown in screenshot). my head feels a bit clearer and I feel like my body is starting to purge. I don’t procrastinate as much and I have my weekends back, I’m starting to take care of my health a bit more with supplements etc. I’m going to take blood tests in a few weeks which will hopefully show the impact to my body a bit better.

ilovesushi · 23/01/2024 11:09

How you getting on Op? I realised I was drinking almost every night with dinner. Not much but it was pretty much a daily routine. Reading this thread made me question my habits and I thought I'd give it a miss for a couple of nights. I did and it surprised/ alarmed me how much I wanted a drink! Anyway I skipped a few nights more, then a few more and have barely drunk in the last month. I do feel better for it and I have lost some weight too.

Mamabear2424 · 23/01/2024 22:21

Hi there
I am sticking to my 2 free wine days a week and will move to 3 then 4. I bought some non alcohol red wine and really enjoyed that, so its going well so far.
