Name changed as regular poster.

Usually win between £100 and £250 per month in Premium Bonds with nearly full holdings.

Just checked January's numbers and we've won £1000!

Anyone else?

AIBU to think they're a good investment?!

My Mum has had premium bonds since 1967 and not won a penny! I've been checking monthly for years now. They're all there, all active.
Pisses me off. Makes no sense

I’ve had mine for over 50 years and never won a penny either.

LonelynSad · 03/01/2024 15:27

@Happiestathome A LOT of money. An eye watering sum as she's added to it over monthly ever since.

It seems to be that you need 20-50k holdings to be in with a decent chance.

DP won £300.

It's his 8 month winning in a row! £700 being the largest win and I think £50 being the smallest?

How much does he have in premium bonds though? It's nearly always those with mega thousands in there.😢

You have to have a sizeable amount in them to win on a regular basis. Recently with interest rates increasing the prize pool has increased so people are winning more, which generates more excitement.

Someone holding £100 for 20 years is unlikely to win anything over that period.

That said every now and again someone holding next to nothing wins something big. But most of the large prizes are taken by people holding tens of thousands.

It's not a good investment. The way I look at it though is that the money I would get in interest would not be life changing. But a large win would. So I am happy to sacrifice the small amount of interest for the small possibility I might win big.

A lot of people often mutter to themselves that it would be really nice if they won a million quid. But if you are not in it, you have absolutely zero chance of winning it. The lottery is similar.

Hah, I have had £100 since 2005 and never won a penny so you're right!

IKnowHowToSayMyName · 03/01/2024 15:41

I have £35000 and win almost every month. No huge prizes yet, but more than I would have earned in interest elsewhere.

WeCanLeaveTheChristmasLightsUp · 03/01/2024 15:42

I won £200 on £40k but I've had to take £20k out now for some big bills this month. I'll probably move the remaining £20k while there are still some decent interest rates available because it's so depressing to win nothing in a month and I know when it's down to £20k that's pretty likely! I've had fluctuating amounts in there, but even on full holdings the most I ever got was £550. I've stopped believing the big prizes really exist, until a couple of days before each draw when I get sucked back in again to thinking but what if..?

Igmum · 03/01/2024 16:27

Didn't get anything this month so they're obviously saving me for a big win soon Grin

FrownedUpon · 03/01/2024 16:31

I won £400 this month. 4x £50. 2 x £100. Great start to the year.

user14699084787 · 03/01/2024 16:37

£125. DS has already spent it for me on trainers and a haircut!

They’re probably not the best of investments, but the money is 100% safe, can be accessed anytime and winnings are tax free…And I love the excitement of the last few days of the month, such is the dullness of my existence! 😀

Six prizes must have been very exciting! I was a bit disappointed with one - totally expecting a £25 or a £50 - until I saw how much it was for...

I used to hold the maximum number of PBs between selling my house and buying my next one. I got a return every month and it was about the same as the rate of interest I would have obtained with my high street bank (when interest rates were half decent). But it held the potential to achieve a lot more which was a bit more fun than having it in HSBC!

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 03/01/2024 16:52

I won £100 today on 33k holdings. Have won something most months this year, from £50 to a very exciting £5k earlier in the year. So overall it's been an excellent return on the last 12 months!

I like the low-stakes gambling element much more than just stuffing it into a boring old savings account #notafinancialadvisor

Luckystreak · 03/01/2024 16:53

Exactly @PerceptionIsReality, no-one is on here all excited about bank rates 😂

How do you buy them and what happens to them if you die?

Coastalcreeksider · 03/01/2024 17:42

When my dad died, they have to be cashed in, you can't take them over. NS&I returned the whole amount to a nominated account once they received grant of probate document.

Buy them online - search national savings

Gazelda · 03/01/2024 18:22

I have £34k invested but an absolutely terrible return over the past 2 years.

In fact, I forgot to even bother checking the app until I saw this thread.

Surprised to get 2 x £50 wins this month. The most I've had for a year.

Thindog · 03/01/2024 18:23

They aren't a very good investment, but they give me a reason to clean and tidy at the end of each month. Ready for Agent Million to call in.

Wherearemymarbles · 03/01/2024 19:01

We both had full holdings but also have an offset mortgage so sold them to pay down mortgage.
guaranteed savings of nearly £500 per month which better than odds of winning big.

BigFatCat2024 · 03/01/2024 19:03

£100 win, with the lowest holding (£7k) I've had for a long time

Keepthepeace82 · 03/01/2024 19:40

Between Me, DH and DCs we have 4 full holdings (only until the end of this year) ...For the 2nd month in a row we've won nothing at all! Are we just really unlucky?

Vgbeat · 03/01/2024 19:41

Nope not had a winner yet. Thinking of taking it put and putting it in my savings instead.

BovrilonToast · 03/01/2024 19:48

I got £50 this month, just after cashing them in to pay my income tax this year! I've had between 3-17k in there over a few years and won a total of £75...
