Booked Magaluf holiday for family??

saveplanet · 23/12/2023 08:05

I have lived in the UK for the last 10 years, I never heard Magaluf has a bad reputation. I booked an all-inclusive family holiday in a resort in October ,about 500m from the main Magaluf beach.
While I was researching I found that this town has a really bad reputation. Please reassure me, or do I need to get this changed?
I am very stressed out.

I have only paid a deposit at 1 am this morning.

How is Santa- Ponsa in Majorca?

Santa Ponsa is the same but where the Irish go.

I went a few years ago with my daughter. Last minute holiday needed so we were working to a tight budget.
We stayed at the Melia.
We had no problems in the hotel with any inappropriate behaviour, very nice hotel would stay there again - and because neither of us wanted to see that kind of thing ventured out into the town/seafront in the day/early evening. No problems at all. It's not all those yobbo types there, there's some nice bars and cafes etc. The type of holiday makers you are trying to avoid are on a different time zone because they're up half the night partying. They usually start to surface from 11am onwards up to the beach with a bit of a hangover leaving you free to do your own thing.

Playa da Muro is pleasant. Long stretch of beach and a nature reserve.

Hi OP Jet2do have hotels in palma nova - we went October half term. We were the edge just near Magaluf and it was fine. Hotel was very family friendly, and no loud partying. We walked down to the beach in palma nova and it was a lovely week.

This is where we have booked in red arrow, although it will be new refurbished water park.

Seems a bit far from Palma Nova. No idea how far we are from nights clubs streets

Further up again is Portals Nous which is after Palma Nova if that makes sense. Very quiet lovely restaurants nice (small) beach ⛱️

5128gap · 23/12/2023 10:01

You'll be fine. October is quieter and the rowdier element will be frequenting different areas and operating on a different clock to a young family. You'll probably be safely tucked up in bed by the time the party really gets going, and will be able to enjoy some peaceful mornings while they're sleeping it off.

DumpedByText · 23/12/2023 10:07

Hmm, well if you walk into Magaluf main strip it's just chaos. I went in August and as a 54 year old I was shocked. It's packed out and just bars and loud music. Majority of people are young out for a good time, which is what it's designed for!

If your hotel is on the outskirts you'll be fine. We stayed in Palma Nova which is a 10 minute walk away.

I also feel you can avoid it if you want to, it's literally one very long street full of bars/clubs. Once you pass that it quietens down a lot.

If you do go you have to walk through it one night, just to experience it! 😂

Hotel is Fergus style Mallorca - 4 star

I looked at this hotel OP as we stayed at the Fergus Club in Paguera Majorca this October and it was lovely, the Magnus upgrades are definitely worth it. It was in a very quiet resort near beautiful beaches, perhaps ask Jet2 if you can move the booking there?

This specific hotel you have booked used to be major party hotel, and they are refurbishing and trying to make it more family friendly. It does look like it will be really nice. Although we did not book as it's too close to the Magaluf strip for us. It was very cheap so very tempting! The water park looks excellent.

cestlavielife · 23/12/2023 10:24

Just ask to change resort
It will be the same airport
Alcudia might be better. For family
Or pollensa

cestlavielife · 23/12/2023 10:27

If you like the beach get one closer to the beach
So you can carry your gear more easily
Unless you will prefer to be in pool all week in which case no worries

BlueMum16 · 23/12/2023 10:33

Double check the small print. All inclusive in Magaluf isn't actually all inclusive. You only get a couple of drinks included at meal times to curb the drinking culture. So probably not the bargain you thought as you'll need more spends.

I would move. I've been on the edge with my kids staying in Palma Nova. Walking round in the morning and there was vomit everywhere 🤢

I've been to Playa De Muro and loved it. Also would go to Santa Ponsa as family have been there too.

Better to move and look forward to your holiday than be worried for the next few months.

Handsfullofholes · 23/12/2023 10:34

Playa de Muro is the other side of Majorca but it is lovely - beaches are beautiful, quiet and sandy.

Don't be a div
she said she hadn't told her husband yet. How many people actually book their family holiday with no planning or discussion with their partner? Seriously? You'd happily spend £1000s on the one family holiday of the year (usually) without even running the location past your partner? Sure...

I was going to say similar - see what Jet2 have in Paguera. They seem to be one of the only UK tour operators who go there (more popular with German holidaymakers) so possibly a bit cheaper than other resorts currently (as comparatively unknown). We had a lovely few days there in August and Jet2 were brilliant so hopefully they’ll be straightforward helping you sort this out. (Stayed at the Palmira Paradise fwiw).

rookiemere · 23/12/2023 10:41

@saveplanet have you spoken to Jet2 yet ?

FettleOfKish · 23/12/2023 10:44

But the OP is going in October, which is very end of the season for Majorca and after most of the night clubs and beach clubs have had their 'closing party' for the season. As I said upthread I was there in late September 2019 (on a girls trip, out on the strip every night) and it was quiet everywhere.

Sugarfish · 23/12/2023 10:44

It doesn’t look like the hotel is near the strip and from the website it looks family friendly. People who just want to drink will be booking into the party hotels.

One thing I do find concerning is that it doesn’t appear to be open yet so no reviews to check online.

Ive been to magaluf a few times over the years and it’s not as bad as people make out, unless you’re going to be in the bars at 2am you won’t see any disgusting behaviour. I was always impressed with how clean the streets were by sunrise, the Spanish are much better at keeping their streets clean than we are. The beach is also beautiful and lots of families go their. I have never seen anyone openly have sex on it.

FettleOfKish · 23/12/2023 10:46

Just to add to above suggestions of other resorts, some of the smaller ones will be basically deserted, depending when in October OP is going. I spent a week in Alcudia another late September and restaurants and bars were being locked up and white-washed for the winter.

The upside to Magaluf and Palmanova is they are larger with more hotels open longer and therefore more amenities open to serve those clients.

TeacherPlease · 23/12/2023 10:48

Stick to Palma Nova and away from Magaluf strip at night (which is easily avoidable) and you’ll be fine.

You can only tell where is Palma Nova and where is Magaluf by the colour of the concrete balls on the floor (one is black, one is white) as they’re that close together.

Check reviews for your hotel though, some will attract a worse clientele than others - but maybe check with Jet2 if you can change it as if you can’t, maybe best to be ignorant!

Jingleballs2 · 23/12/2023 10:48

Yeah it's grim, not for families at all. Even if you're not around much at night, if you're early risers you'll get to see the cleaners dealing with the rubbish/vomit on the streets in the morning 🤢

FlamingoQueen · 23/12/2023 10:55

We’ve spent a few hours in Magaluf in the day and it was lovely and quiet. If you’re not going out at night, then I wouldn’t worry too much. Also, can highly recommend Pirates. Definitely worth a watch!

Squash24 · 23/12/2023 11:04

Honestly, I went to Magaluf last year in July and it wasn’t that wild. I went to the strip one night and that was nuts. But the rest of the town away from the strip was great - I stayed just behind Nikki Beach and it was really very tame. Check the tripadvisor reviews for your hotel and see what others have said about it. I also stayed in Torrenova, walking distance to the strip in Magaluf, this year with family (including kids) and it was fine also. You could always do day trips and boat trips to other areas. The worst reputation is certainly from days gone by, and I feel only remains on the strip itself.

I'd estimate a 20 min walk to palma and a 10 min walk to magaluf strip. Personally I'd move hotels if you can.
