Booked Magaluf holiday for family??

saveplanet · 23/12/2023 08:05

I have lived in the UK for the last 10 years, I never heard Magaluf has a bad reputation. I booked an all-inclusive family holiday in a resort in October ,about 500m from the main Magaluf beach.
While I was researching I found that this town has a really bad reputation. Please reassure me, or do I need to get this changed?
I am very stressed out.

I have only paid a deposit at 1 am this morning.

It’s no where near as bad now, much more families and a gorgeous beach. Palma Nova is a better shout for families though and AI in Magaluf has restricted alcoholic drinks (3 with lunch, 3 with dinner only). October is end of season and a lot of clubs and bars have closed then.

saveplanet · 23/12/2023 08:24

I just looked at the resort which I am happy with and also booked VIP pool access. God knows what that means.

That might be the reason Magaluf did not come directly while I was booking it, it was just coming up as Mallorca

I wouldn’t go all inclusive there as they limit your drinks now, waste of money.

saveplanet · 23/12/2023 08:30

Strangely I heard Benidorm as a party place not Magaluf. I haven't told my husband yet.He is UK-born. I feel so stupid on one side and optimistic on the other side.

Jet2 customer service is closed. I can't wait to speak to them.

So I checked online and looks like it would be £50 per person to change hotel - but as you have literally just booked it they might have some wriggle room if you're keeping the same flights.

Meanwhile read the reviews on Tripadvisor and make an informed decision. It's possible it's on the edge of Magaluf and not in the centre. Also try to identify a better hotel and location if you do want to change - most of the rest of Majorca is very family friendly.

rookiemere · 23/12/2023 08:30

What is the hotel ?

BooBooBaloo · 23/12/2023 08:34

Magaluf is really awful, full of drunken teenagers so I'd get it changed asap. We stayed in Palma Nova and walked through to Magaluf one morning, there were piles of vomit all over the pavements

Also do your research before you move location (there are some lovely parts of Majorca) as the local government are trying to crack down on the reputation for drunken debauchery by limiting the amount/timing of drinks that can be served AI at the hotels in several resorts (3 drinks with lunch, 3 drinks with dinner anything else had to be paid for) so it really isn't what most people would consider AI

Also the weather in Majorca in October can't really be relied on.

saveplanet · 23/12/2023 08:34

they are doing a massive makeover and opening a brand new four-star Fergus-style waterpark hotel.

We went in September it was shocking I would cancel. Never ever again

saveplanet · 23/12/2023 08:37

I can't find Jet2 cooling-off period etc? I hope I won't lose my deposit.

I went in may. We had a family holiday over the border at the Katmandu (but pretty much still in Magaluf) followed by a hen do after my family went home. It was far from the best holiday and I wouldn't go again but it didn't feel too seedy for the kids other than the giant penis magnets everywhere.

My children are young, 13, 11 and 5. I booked with jet2, wonder whether they will not refund my deposit.

I was looking at holidays from last one week in Majorca. I never thought too much of it

Jet2 are pretty good usually. They were great at switching during the pandemic. I would call them and ask if you can switch to a different Majorca resort.

There is no official cooling off period.
Stop panicking and start researching.
Trip advisor reviews on your specific hotel should tell you all you need to know. You may not even need to change or cancel.

Interested to know how many of the 'OMG don't go' respondents have a) stayed in Magaluf b) stayed in October and c) stayed in the past 5 years or so.

FWIW having spent time in both I'd pick Magaluf over Albufeira, which doesn't carry the same reputation somehow but when we were there in July last year came across as an absolute hole of the worst type of pissed-up Brit. I was offered a full English breakfast (with a free pint!) at 4pm in 35 degrees on the strength of my accent alone. No thanks.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 23/12/2023 08:47

I went to Magaluf when I was 17. As far as I was aware it has always been an 18 30s type destination.

I would definitely rebook, people go in October too.

SoxDogs · 23/12/2023 08:47

I’ve been to Magaluf twice and absolutely loved it. Although, to be fair, it was over 20 years ago and I was 20, single, and part of a group getting pissed and clubbing every night. I doubt it’s changed much.

BlueDayBritishIdiot · 23/12/2023 08:49

My 18 year old had a wonderful holiday when they went. I haven't asked and don't want to be told what went on I'm content to know they had fun and enjoyed themselves...

DirectionToPerfection · 23/12/2023 08:52

You will be able to change hotel OP. As a PP mentioned, you might need to pay a fee.

Take a look at similarly priced hotels in different resorts before you call Jet2, so you know what you want to switch to.

If the blurb on the website genuinely didn't mention that the hotel was in Magaluf, you can raise that with them and hopefully get any fees waived.

And remember for the future, never book a holiday without researching where you're going!

SEG152 · 23/12/2023 08:55

Me and my partner went last Sept. We are not party animals and don’t like that scene at all. We were at an adults only hotel and not a single drunken idiot in sight. There are some beautiful areas to explore.

Wellhellooooodear · 23/12/2023 08:56

Not sure what it's like now but I went on a girls holiday about 20 years ago in my 20s and it was carnage. Having said that we went to party, there may be other parts more suitable for families.

Thelondonone · 23/12/2023 08:58

Change it to the canaries as the weather won’t be guaranteed in Majorca (not las americas in Tenerife).

DidIMakeaMistake · 23/12/2023 09:04

Irony of @saveplanet and flying however no don’t go to Magaluf.

Christmassss · 23/12/2023 09:11

Is moving hotel down the road to Palma Nova an option, that would be a better family holiday?

Crazyinlove123 · 23/12/2023 09:11

It depends where in Magaluf. Is it a family hotel? Personally I wouldn’t stay in Magaluf with kids (or without tbh) but I don’t think it’s as bad as people make out. Most of the drunks are in bed all day anyway.

Even in the summer, the worst of it is on the strip at night. During the day I wouldn’t say it was bad and the beach is lovely.

If you can, I would try and change to a Palma Nova hotel. Palma Nova also has no cap on the drinks for AI.
