Frozen pizza

To buy a frozen pizza. Are they all rubbish tasting soggy messes or are there any that are any good?

If it's a soggy mess your oven probably isn't turned up high enough. Pizzas need a pretty hot oven.

SurelySmartie · 06/12/2023 21:23

Fig and blue cheese sounds amazing.

Went for a Goodfellas margarita. Wasn’t amazing. Oh well, melted cheese is melted cheese at least.
I’ll definitely have to hunt down one of these crosta mollica things.

I like Sainsburys spicy chicken or asda bbq chicken

Mumaway · 06/12/2023 21:40

Crosta and mollica are delicious

AmazingDayz · 06/12/2023 21:44

Ok I’m not near a Waitrose so don’t think I’m going to be able to get a crosta and mollusca. Think it might be down to goodfellas, ristorante or dr Oetker.

I want something thin not doughy, cheesy, quick but decent tasting!

Ristorante and dr oetker are the sane thing so that’ll help narrow the choice down c

PrimoPiatti · 07/12/2023 07:33

They are all too too salty.

madeinmanc · 07/12/2023 08:45

I discovered a happy accident with pizzas. It's a bit tricky and requires skilled manoeuvres but worth it.

The large Chicago town stuffed crust pizzas are raw dough. If they are left in a fridge not freezer for a few days they defrost but carry on proving.

You end up with a fantastic tasting pizza. A bit like spelt dough that's risen slowly.

Getting the wobbly defrosted pizza out of its wrapping onto a baking sheet is a big challenge that I've perfected as the taste is superb. Better than hot delivered pizzas.

I think it's all to do with the extra proving time.

Only for the brave, and use extra flour and cardboard to move it onto the tray.

madeinmanc · 07/12/2023 09:29

So funny you mention that about the Chicago Town ones. My oven is faulty and only gets to about 200 degrees or maybe less, so that particular pizza turned out horribly for me. I didn't know they were raw dough but that totally explains it. I don't normally get Chicago Town but I think this was during lockdown.

SABM10 · 07/12/2023 09:40

I generally prefer the 'best'/'finest' etc ones from the cool section (preferably with sourdough base) to frozen. Also for anyone who would prefer homemade but can't be arsed with making the dough for the base (aka me), I'd recommend using large naan breads - they come out of the oven deliciously chewy and crispy, and you can get the garlic ones if you so wish! I prefer adding my own toppings so quite regularly do this. Also a single naan is (for me) just the right size for an individual pizza serving so people can add their own toppings to each.

Handsnotwands · 07/12/2023 11:48

Crusty and molluscum is all I’m seeing now

I’ll have a massive salad instead

MeinKraft · 07/12/2023 11:53

The Northern Pizza Dough Co do frozen pizza dough that you roll out into a base then add your own toppings. They're really nice

I’m intrigued…

Could you put it on the tray before you put it in the fridge though? Or does the tray have to be hot?

I'm very much enjoying the thought that someone genuinely feels making pizza from scratch - washing hands, getting the stuff out, weighing, kneading, proving, shaping + washing & prepping ingredients, layering pizza and then putting it all away & washing up - is in any way comparable to opening a box & flinging the contents into an oven.

Oh to be that driven when it comes to a pizza. I wish I could capture that energy.

I love frozen pizzas, stuffed crust Goodfellas being my go to quick & dirty tea.

I'm sorry to be "that person" but it really is incredibly easy to make pizza. And it freezes well,

and it doesn't usually taste any better than shop bought,
and it is a massive faff.
The point about pizza is that it is basically NO cooking

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 07/12/2023 13:56

madeinmanc · 06/12/2023 18:59

Crosta and mollica unfortunately are not vegetarian. It's really annoying how they took a Margherita pizza and made it non-vegetarian in a market full of vegetarians. And that they went to the effort of making a vegan pizza but not a vegetarian one (that is easily and usually vegetarian in this country).

Edited

Out of curiosity, what do they have in them that isn't vegetarian? Is it parmesan/non veggie cheese, or is it something else?

steppemum · 07/12/2023 13:57

I find goodfellows a bit greasy.
Co-op black box ones are good.
Also Aldi, they do something with spinach and mozerella or similar, that's nice

TheThingIsYeah · 07/12/2023 14:07

I find it unbelievable that people have never bought a frozen pizza before. But then I've only been on MN a few months so every day is still an eye opener.

Just get the cheapest cheese and tomato ones out of Lidl, they were 2 for £1.50 (probably gone up in price). Put some chopped onion and caramelised onion chutney on top before shoving in the oven. You'll thank me.

madeinmanc · 07/12/2023 14:15

Parmesan, which isn't usually on a Margherita anyway 🙄

Email info [email protected] to complain.

They're £1.95 for two now, but still very good value and surprisingly tasty, I agree!

supersonicginandtonic · 07/12/2023 16:00

5 minutes to make the dough in a food processor-10 by hand. Raise n the fridge all day. 10 minutes to roll out and shove toppings on. 20 minutes rest. 20 minutes in the oven. One to eat and one to freeze. Minimum effort. Scheduling rather than cooking!

That's not that quick when you've been at work all day and get home late and need to feed the kids quickly.

I'm counting "all day" as 8 hours. So that's 9 hours.

9 hours!

I prefer buying fresh ones and freezing them, I usually cut them in half before freezing in case it's just one person eating

This is exactly what I do ! I wrap the pieces in plastic wrap then foil to protect against freezer burn. I always get the rectangular ones, usually on yellow sticker.
