To think this is a strange way to do Secret Santa?

My office has announced a Secret Santa but has set a minimum price of £40. There’s no maximum but you have to spend over £40 on a single gift. I’m new to the company but every SS I’ve done previously had a maximum spend, not a minimum and it’s always been £5-10.

This just seems like a lot of money to spend on coworkers you may not know well (I work in a different department to the name I pulled so have to research them) and also having a minimum doesn’t sit well with me given the disparity in salaries across the office. I’m new so I don’t want to rock the boat by asking if the organiser got mixed up but it’s also been made clear we all need to participate.

I don't think there are food banks where OP lives, where £20 is the typical price for a cinema ticket.

You need to mobilise these water cooler people, and anyone else they know who is not happy with the whole ridiculous thing and write a letter and sign as a group and say you aren't happy with it for all the following reasons.... The telling someone why the 'gift' is perfect for them is just hell on earth when you don't even know them! I'd be so stressed out with that. Someone needs to take a stand and it looks like it might be you! My best wishes!

Magicmama92 · 14/12/2023 10:59

If I were you I'd get what I'd normally get forget the money. What they going to do ask to see your bank? This is all ridiculous I'd be saying I'm uncomfortable with the price and the way they want you all to do it. They are actually making it less fun.

@Fancylike you have to let us know what you buy and how your mini presentation goes.

evtheria · 15/12/2023 17:04

I cannot believe the update, that is even more crazy! So sorry, OP, I would hate this so much and it would make me feel quite anxious about the swap.

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 15/12/2023 17:35

Now you've mentioned the presentation thing I'd be handing my notice in..too far.

I didn't open my SS as I hate opening presents in front of people.

The only was of looking at the £40 is, of it went to someone that didn't have many family members around etc then it's not so bad and it could make their Christmas that little bit better but other than that. Tedious.

dottydoglover · 15/12/2023 17:49

Most secret santas are a gift up to £10 ! That is way too expensive !

Fancylike · 18/12/2023 08:50

The Xmas event is tonight, I have bought my SS 2x movie tickets which includes concessions, valid for a year. So let’s see!

It's still probably too early (hope you booked the day off after the Christmas Do @Fancylike ) but I'm wondering how the Secret Santa went?

strawberry2017 · 22/12/2023 21:41
