To not replace car seat after hitting a pheasant at 38 mph?

Guidance says any accident above 20mph means you must replace the car seat. Is it this same in this situation? Don’t really want to pay out again for another one.

Yeah, way too little info. Did you hit the pheasant or the pheasant plucker or the pheasant plucker's son!? [Sorry, couldn't help it].

More seriously - did you hit and the car smashed to a stop, air bags deployed etc. Or did you hit it, your bumper has a little ding and you carried on driving at 38mph?

I'd only replace the car seat if there was actual damage or significant impact.

Sexnotgender · 24/11/2023 12:22

38mph is quite specific.

Hhhapp17 · 24/11/2023 12:26

Thanks. The pheasant died so that’s why I felt it might have been more severe? my baby wasn’t with me at the time and it didn’t feel like a big impact.

(I went back to check as I was worried!)

Surely, the advice to replace the car seat is based on the assumption that the seats safety features had to deploy or were damaged - eg the isofix is damaged as a result of a side swipe or the overall structure is damaged as a result of the seat attempting to launch itself out of the car, but being stopped.

I really can't imagine that the car seat itself would be damaged when there's no damage to the car. Of course the pheasant died - it's a bird, hit by over a ton of heavy machinery moving at pace.

CormorantStrikesBack · 24/11/2023 12:35

Poor pheasant, but they are tiny and light with a head the size of the golf ball. It doesn’t take much of an impact to kill one. I know someone who killed one on a push bike!

Cnidarian · 24/11/2023 12:43

Unless the pheasant was unexplicably the size of an elephant you'll be fine. The number of pheasants released for shooting in this country is absolutely ridiculous, its something like half the biomass of all wild birds. And they are stupid birds, all over the roads causing accidents, mad really.

Did anyone else open this thread expecting some utterly grim story about bits of dismembered pheasant somehow ending up all over the car seat?

JanglingJack · 24/11/2023 12:45

Christmas dinner sorted.

LadyofLaundry88 · 24/11/2023 12:46

This thread has made my day 😂😂👏👏

Thanks for the mostly kind replies

Thanks also for the funny ones… I’m sure I will see the funny side at some point!

Anyone else really sad for the pheasant?

Dogcatmousecat · 24/11/2023 12:50

A pheasant or an emu !

BrioNotBiro · 24/11/2023 12:51

I hit a pheasant and it cracked my bumper! Maybe it was an armour plated one.

Hhhapp17 · 24/11/2023 12:52

@BrioNotBiro what did you do about the car seat?

YABU. Of course you need to replace it Confused

What? 😂

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 24/11/2023 12:54

Apologies OP as hitting any animal is not nice. On the other hand some of the replies have made me chuckle so much.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 24/11/2023 12:08

She said pheasant not peasant.
No op, unless there’s significant impact damage to the front of the far and I doubt there would be. Most pheasants are low to the ground, poor flyers and by the time they’ve gathered enough momentum to lift off they’re only at radiator grill height.
I’ve hit a few, the most memorable one was stuck inside the front bumper under the radiator. I didn’t even know I’d hit it.

Thank you. This made me laugh!!

Where has common sense gone????

Use common sense - ask Esther McVey, she’s the “Minister for Common Sense” apparently!

Pheasant? Nah.

Cow? Yes.

Elephant? Definitely.

It's hard to drive to Sainsburys from my house without hitting a sodding pheasant at this time of year. The bastards are everywhere, they are incredibly stupid and seem to prefer walking to flying. The country road from here to the coast is known as Roadkill Lane, and it's carpeted with squished ex-pheasants.

If every parent replaced their car seat when they hit one, there'd be a national shortage of car seats.

And you're right about hitting cows. Friend's son's car was a write-off after he hit an escaped bull one night. The police were bloody livid, they'd warned the farmer about it getting out onto the road 3 times.

ChickenBhunaandChips · 24/11/2023 13:03

I hit a pigeon doing 70mph once. Feathers everywhere.

Tinysoxxx · 24/11/2023 13:07

I specifically pay attention to front grills of potential car purchases after several incidences of having to take animal debris out of them. Blergh.
