Are ‘baby on board’ car signs no longer a thing?

I swear they used to be everywhere when I had my DC a decade ago. There was always a discussion about whether they were worth having, people arguing about their ‘true purpose’ etc etc but that aside they were commonplace on family cars. Nowadays I never see any! Was it a fad? Or do I just not really notice them around because I’m no longer in the ‘baby phase’ of life?

I hope they have gone, they used to give me the rage! They seemed to get replaced with 'princess/Prince on board' for a bit. But maybe people finally saw sense (or are just spending all their time/money on gender reveal parties instead)

I saw these for sale recently. Gender Reveal Box £100. Baby Blocks £100. Used. What would they have cost in the first place?

Why would anyone give a fuck whether someone else has a baby on board sign? Like really? How does it affect you at all?

I assumed they were there to let emergency responders know to look for a small child in an accident. So again, Why would anyone give a fuck whether someone else has a baby on board sign?

CeCe2023 · 22/11/2023 11:33

It’s really weird that there are so many responses about not caring if there’s a baby in the car, and that babies are no more important than anyone else - that may be, but they are much more likely to be seriously injured in a crash, even a small one. Sign aside, it’s appalling the way some posters are taking on here about BABIES!

I can't believe I'm still engaging in this thread, but seriously....if this is the sort of thing that annoys you, I'm worried for your blood pressure. Take a break from the Internet today. And maybe the roads too, hunting for these car stickers is clearly not good for your health.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 22/11/2023 11:57

wasn't intended use for those so if car was in accident it would notify respondents that there may be a baby in the car

BM1989 · 22/11/2023 11:57

I hope they have been left in the past. I hate the grandchild on board signs. And the powered by fairydust stickers!

Dazedandfrazzled · 22/11/2023 12:00

I always thought these were stupid as I thought "well ok I won't crash into you because you have a baby" ... but once I had a baby, my driving was terrible due to sleep deprivation and not being able to focus. I then thought maybe the point is to warn others to stay away or an apology of some sorts for the bad driving

fearfuloffluff · 22/11/2023 12:03

I wonder if they used to be something you'd pick up in Mothercare by the tills, but now most shopping is online nobody actually bothers selecting one because they're pointless.

LolaSmiles · 22/11/2023 12:05

And the powered by fairydust stickers!
You beat me to it!

The ones I see are:
Family stick figures, including pets
Prince on board / Nana's little princess on board
Powered by fairy dust

LadyMacB · 22/11/2023 12:10

I think they’re just generally viewed as a bit naff and have become a joke, so no one puts them up any longer. In the same way no-one puts a sticker of their name and their partner’s name along the top of their windscreen, or has a horn that goes “na na na nar diddle nar nar nar”.

If you’re sleep deprived and unable to focus, you should not be behind the wheel.

ETA I actually can’t believe I’ve read this. My driving was awful because I was sleep deprived and couldn’t focus? What if you’d caused an accident and killed somebody? No better than driving under the influence.

A 2012 study actually found that BOB signs were responsible for 1 in 20 accidents…

I can believe that. Some of us have to get really close to be able to read those tiny signs...🤓😬

🤣🤣🤣

There is someone who lives near me who is a middle aged man with teens who owns a little old silver Ford Ka who has a ‘Fake Taxi’ sign hanging. I have a strong suspicion he thinks it means Dad’s Taxi and I am tempted to pop a note through his door clearing things up if you don’t know what Fake Taxi is DON’T Google it)

They're just a naff little sign announcing to the world you've got a kid, and it may, or may not be in the car. Why would you put one up? You can't seriously think an inconsiderate driver is going to adjust their behaviour?

Don't think I've seen one in years - but never really looked or been annoyed about it! Seen the stick figures though!

Shame they’ve fallen out of fashion really, they were so helpful when deciding whose car to crash into that day.

My late OH used to call the 'please ram me' signs, we saw them in Germany long before they were common in the UK.

Haydug · 22/11/2023 13:27

PinkRoses1245 · 22/11/2023 09:42

When I do see them; they tend to be the worst drivers! Ridiculous; suggesting the lives of babies and parents are more valuable than any one else’s. Everyone should drive responsibly

I thought the purpose was that in the case of an accident, they would know to look for an infant.

Haydug · 22/11/2023 13:32

I've read more of the thread and now realise it's not!

We had one when we had a newborn but it didn't last long as the rubber melted in the 2022 ridiculous heat! Wouldn't bother getting one again, as it sounds like there's no point, and we'd be hated by strangers apparently🥲🤭

No that’s an urban myth. First responders don’t need a triangle to look for a human

The wiper stickers!

Someone local to me has 'tell your cat I said pspspsps' on their car and I must admit, it makes me smile every time i see it😄

Yes yes, OK, I have already commented again since. It never made sense to me really, but you hear it a lot.

Spongekirst · 22/11/2023 13:48

I actually think because a lot of the newer cars have blacked out/tinted back windows, they're pointless!

Iwasafool · 22/11/2023 13:51

My husband wouldn't have them in our car, he reckoned psycopaths would use them as a target He's a retired police officer and I think he's a bit (quite a big bit) cynical.

They have always been pointless. The glass in the windows makes no difference.
