Are ‘baby on board’ car signs no longer a thing?

I swear they used to be everywhere when I had my DC a decade ago. There was always a discussion about whether they were worth having, people arguing about their ‘true purpose’ etc etc but that aside they were commonplace on family cars. Nowadays I never see any! Was it a fad? Or do I just not really notice them around because I’m no longer in the ‘baby phase’ of life?

Shame they’ve fallen out of fashion really, they were so helpful when deciding whose car to crash into that day.

😁

I have one on my car. One of the old school yellow diamond types. Genuinely didn't realise there was so much ill will against a car sticker. Maybe relax? Take a breath and find something worthwhile to gurn about.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/11/2023 10:41

I think people have realised that they’re just a ridiculous thing to have. No one drives around thinking “I won’t crash into THAT car as planned, they have a baby on board”

This

The ubiquitous 'My Family' ones.

I saw one which said 'The Empire doesn't care about your family' and had all the stick people being blasted away by an AT Walker. 🤭

”Baby on Board” signs should be attached with a rubber sucker when a baby is in the vehicle. Their purpose is to alert the emergency services to look for a baby, which might otherwise be overlooked in the event of an accident.

Unfortunately, their use has become somewhat diluted by permanent and joke variations.

That’s not their purpose at all and never has been.

Emergency services responders are highly trained and experienced people and don’t need a shitty yellow triangle to be able to find a child in a car crash

I'm sorry that happened to you and your child but why do you think whoever did it would have not done it to your car if they saw the sign?

I’m sorry that happened to you and I’m glad you’re both ok!

However the theory that it wouldn’t have happened had you had a BOB sign suggests the driver consciously crashed into your car and decided not to stop in time when he like have

Blueskydreamer7 · 22/11/2023 10:47

My view is, I'm pregnant with an infant in the car. I drive around busy roads on a daily basis. If it encourages a couple of drivers to take an extra couple of metres or stop driving like Cruella De Vil in her demon phase around my car, that's fine for me. If not, that's their choice. I'll still mutter my own profanities at them as my choice to do so.

I don't really care if you don't like it. I'll continue to have it stuck on, and if it annoys you prolific moaners a little more, all the better!

So you don’t even have a baby but you have a BOB sticker?

I’ve never seen one and thought ‘I better keep my distance’ because I keep my distance anyway. Tailgaters generally don’t give a shit about someone else’s kid

But don’t you feel you’re being obnoxious with your belief that your car and it’s occupants are more precious than others?

Sparkle88K · 22/11/2023 10:51

Yeah I understand where you're both coming from. It probably wouldn't have made any difference as they clearly wasn't paying attention to the road anyway.

alldonefortoday · 22/11/2023 10:51

@MadameCamembert completely agree, all road users deserve to travel in safety

It’s not about that though is it? It’s trying to let shit drivers know to take their time and be careful around this specific car as there is a baby on board. Yes they should do that anyway and act sensibly around every car but that’s not the case.

Seeing a baby on board may make someone think twice and slow the fuck down. Not sure why that annoys people so much?

Switcher · 22/11/2023 10:52

Personally I just assume that what it means is "sorry I'm a shit driver because I'm being distracted by my fighting kids", so in that respect it's helpful in providing context as to why they are indeed shit drivers.

Exactly, these things happen and there’s nothing you could have done. Glad you’re both safe thoug

Blueskydreamer7 · 22/11/2023 10:53

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Pregnant + infant.

Obnoxious? I don't think so in this situation. I'm.not saying my cargo is more precious. Simply alerting people to the fact that there's kids on board. It's the same principle as safety at a school, nursery, pool etc. Extra measures are always put in place to try and keep kids safe. Why would a car be different and why wouldn't I use a very inoffensive sticker to do that?

I really don’t think shit drivers only drive erratically unless they see a BOB sign.I think they’re no less likely to give a shit about who is in the car. It’s a huge assumption that everyone cares about every kid going - they don’t

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/11/2023 10:55

It's stick people now isnt it?
Annoying

It’s not there because everyone cares about every kid going. If it can make at least one difference to a poor driver then the sign is worth it imo. It doesn’t hurt anyone for the sign to exist so I really can’t see why people get so worked up about it

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/11/2023 10:56

Even worse that “Princess of board” is when they have the kids names
”Olivia on board”
”Jamie in board”
Well done you’ve now shared their identity with strangers. Have people learned nothing from the football shirt advice

P signs are much more effective. No one cares about baby on board stickers because they are there for you, but P sign is potential "danger" to them.
No one came near to me with my P signs on DH's massive car😂 He laughed that he never saw everyone keeping correct distances like that before.

Be fair now. They are helpful to identify the idiot drivers who believe the emergency services will take any notice. In other words the drivers to stay away from.

ManateeFair · 22/11/2023 10:59

They were just a bit of a craze, like signs saying 'Mum's Taxi'
