Are ‘baby on board’ car signs no longer a thing?

I swear they used to be everywhere when I had my DC a decade ago. There was always a discussion about whether they were worth having, people arguing about their ‘true purpose’ etc etc but that aside they were commonplace on family cars. Nowadays I never see any! Was it a fad? Or do I just not really notice them around because I’m no longer in the ‘baby phase’ of life?

@idontlikealdi Well we’ve effectively reinstated it by talking about it 😂

I can’t believe posts that say fucking cunt are allowed (again, many very appropriate circumstances to say that) but not bollocks.

It’s very strange.

Boymamaxx · 22/11/2023 13:58

Are these signs not needed so if you were to be in an accident, the first responders know to look at the scene for potential children?

No. That's been debunked thousands of times. Including at least 3 times on this very short thread.

Yes cause that’s how crashes work.

Seriously? I mean I know you are probably sleep deprived right now but give yourself a wobble woman.

Boymamaxx · 22/11/2023 14:13

Yes @DappledThings very short 100+ comment thread.

Back in the 1980's it was still common for the baby to be held in arms in the car. (See images of Princes Di leaving hospital with baby William)There were (allegedly) incidents where in an accident the baby was thrown out of the car, or under a seat and overlooked by emergency services. In this context the signs were seen as helpful. Now when babies are all restrained in a car seat the use of these signs is no longer needed.

sollenwir · 22/11/2023 14:38

We had one because everyone did, and then I saw/read something pointing out that the emergency services always check for all occupants of the car if you are in an accident, and realised how silly they were.
Little Princess/Prince signs made me cringe, unless I was seeing actual royalty a lot more than I realised then none of them were actually princes or princesses!

CatamaranViper · 22/11/2023 14:52

They are quite useful in a car park. People tend to be more aware that the car next to them might need more space when opening the doors and park less like a twat because they want to protect their own car.

CatamaranViper · 22/11/2023 14:56

Also, this thread is clearly full of very sensible, reliable and safe drivers. However in the real world, not everyone is.

If a yellow, plastic sign makes parents feel more comfortable, great.

If it reminds idiot drivers that there are in fact humans, especially vulnerable humans in the other cars around them, then great.

If it does absolutely nothing, then no harm done.

LubaLuca · 22/11/2023 15:02

Many years ago, I used to see a 'Slut on board' sign in the back of a car parked at the railway station every day 🙄

I agree that they seem to have dropped out of favour, which has got to be a good thing. They don't make me less likely to plough into the back of them, and I suppose each one not bought is one fewer piece of plastic toot that ends up in landfill.

You're right no harm done either way, but I also think parents who think it makes a difference need to give themselves a bit of a reality check. When you think about it harshly it's illogical.

Idiot drivers drive like idiots regardless of the car in front. They're certainly not going to think "I was going to rev my stupid engine on my penis-extension-mobile so the world can worship my custom exhaust, but now I've seen your princess is on board in front I won't".

The rest of the world, from the good drivers to the nervous drivers to the not so good but we'll meaning drivers, aren't going to think to themselves "I must do something special because there's a baby in the car in front. Ordinarily I drive safely from A-B, but now I need to be extra special super duper careful because Tina and David, who I don't know, have popped a sprog out. If they were taking David's mother to her hospital appointment then that's different, I shall channel my inner arseholery because no fucks shall be given for Brenda. If they want careful and responsible driving, they better put a Brenda on Board sign in the window".

That sounds very scary. Why would it make any difference though? If anything, they piss people off.

Snugglemonkey · 22/11/2023 17:16

CeeChynaa · 22/11/2023 10:52

It’s not about that though is it? It’s trying to let shit drivers know to take their time and be careful around this specific car as there is a baby on board. Yes they should do that anyway and act sensibly around every car but that’s not the case.

Seeing a baby on board may make someone think twice and slow the fuck down. Not sure why that annoys people so much?

Because it is obnoxious. Your car, your family are not any more deserving of care than anyone else. It does not make people take more care. You can see here, it irritates people. So unlikely to engender much care.

olivialennox · 22/11/2023 18:07

Do those fish signs still exist as well? I think they were to signal Christianity but I don’t know if that’s true or not. I never see them anymore.

OP posts:
DogInATent · 22/11/2023 18:17

I always assumed that "Baby On Board" was code for "Excusing me driving like a t**t but I'm not getting much sleep". They definitely weren't being driven by anyone taking any special care themselves due to the small passenger onboard.

The christian fish thing is still about, and the evolution parody of it.

"Princess On Board" seems to have faded away.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 22/11/2023 19:14

My NDN had a “bump on board” one. Then got the baby on board, now has 3 “Little Princess” ones.

But she’s obnoxious in many ways so it’s not surprising. 😂

Sugarfree23 · 22/11/2023 19:24

The other thing that seems to have been a passing fad is the stickers of matchstick people representing the entire family including cats and dogs.

TatoSpice · 22/11/2023 19:40

SquashPenguin · 22/11/2023 10:25

Shame they’ve fallen out of fashion really, they were so helpful when deciding whose car to crash into that day.

😂
