Are ‘baby on board’ car signs no longer a thing?

I swear they used to be everywhere when I had my DC a decade ago. There was always a discussion about whether they were worth having, people arguing about their ‘true purpose’ etc etc but that aside they were commonplace on family cars. Nowadays I never see any! Was it a fad? Or do I just not really notice them around because I’m no longer in the ‘baby phase’ of life?

I hope they have gone, they used to give me the rage! They seemed to get replaced with 'princess/Prince on board' for a bit. But maybe people finally saw sense (or are just spending all their time/money on gender reveal parties instead)

alldonefortoday · 22/11/2023 00:19

They were really awful I hope they've been consigned to history now

Sugarfree23 · 22/11/2023 00:25

They were a pointless fad. Been replaced by blacked out windows

VeniVidiWeeWee · 22/11/2023 00:25

They've been replaced by dude/princess whatever sticker of your choice.

Wiccan · 22/11/2023 00:59

God I hope so , they get on my nerves .

Catza · 22/11/2023 09:40

Plenty of them still around. I see them all the time and I am definitely not in a baby phase of life.

PinkRoses1245 · 22/11/2023 09:42

When I do see them; they tend to be the worst drivers! Ridiculous; suggesting the lives of babies and parents are more valuable than any one else’s. Everyone should drive responsibly

CatamaranViper · 22/11/2023 09:46

My dad has a grandkids one which he only puts on when the kids are actually in the car.
He's immensely proud of being a grandad which is why he has one. Also the car crash theory, while it's well known that it's bullshit, he says he'd rather put the sign up just in case.

CatamaranViper · 22/11/2023 09:51

There was a thing around where I live about them a couple Christmases ago. It's a nice area, but we had this spell of scrotebags who were coming over and stealing Christmas presents from sheds, garages and cars. If you left a sign in your car saying you had kids, it was like a beacon that you'd have presents in the house somewhere. Our neighbours left presents in the boot of their car with the intention of bringing them in once the kids went to bed and they all got nicked including a gaming console.

BrioNotBiro · 22/11/2023 09:53

They seem to have been taken over by stick-people family representions, including dog where appropriate.

RancidOldHag · 22/11/2023 09:55

It was a fad.

Any utility they may have has (and Snopes indicates the case for that is unproven at best) did not survive first contact with the general public, and they because just another car accessory. Whose time has passed

itsdark · 22/11/2023 09:56

I see them occasionally, but they are often decals now rather than signs.

Winniespooh · 22/11/2023 09:57

They're been replaced by "prince/princess on board" signs round here

As awful as this is, there is a certain irony the thieves were in the minority who did actually pay attention to the sign

BeckhamSeven · 22/11/2023 09:58

Yes quite a few people at my kid's school have them, or those awful stick figure stickers 🤮

”Baby on Board” signs should be attached with a rubber sucker when a baby is in the vehicle. Their purpose is to alert the emergency services to look for a baby, which might otherwise be overlooked in the event of an accident.

Unfortunately, their use has become somewhat diluted by permanent and joke variations.

This is incorrect.

This is incorrect.

That's what I mean by the "unproven" by Snopes.

Lots of people say this, but no-one contributing to that website has come up with any of the emergency services anywhere in US (where the signs were first made) as the originators.

Indeed the first hit these days if you google is a story claimed to be from 1984, when the signs were made by a concerned father hoping people would drive more considerately near cars that were carrying infants.

CrushingOnRubies · 22/11/2023 10:13

They're still around but in cars where the baby is now about 10 years old

I rarely see them nowadays.

SquashPenguin · 22/11/2023 10:25

Shame they’ve fallen out of fashion really, they were so helpful when deciding whose car to crash into that day.

In the event that a car has been so damaged in a crash that an infant car seat has been thrown so far it’s not immediately apparent, yet the little rubber sucker is still hanging on in there in the undamaged rear window?

Whatever happened to the art of debate, with polite, reasoned and evidenced arguments being put forward? It's long since dead on MN ! This place is like the gutter sometimes.
