When we know how bad the environment is how much plastic and stuff ends up in land fill how poor the workers conditions are why are we supporting them. I see so many people doing big hauls of stuff. I know it’s cheap and maybe it’s all people can afford by you buy cheap you buy twice.

I don't know if it's conditioning...it's pretty human to want stuff. In the past it wasn't available to most people so it wasn't something they could indulge in, but rich people have always had plenty of stuff.

Of course it's conditioning. Otherwise why are we be bombarded with advertising wherever we go from the day we are born?
And yes, I agree that wanting stuff is human nature - hunter/gatherer survival instinct. But we are also capable of not giving in to our base desires.

Because I've seen identical items even with same photo on amazon.
I purchased a Storage solution on amazon. Good price at 15.99.
Temu had it for 2.50!
Identical, even the markings and product number on the packaging.

WannaLiveInABubble · 23/11/2023 18:04

I needed dining chair covers. In shops /online they were cheapest £15 for 2.
I needed 10! They faded and fell apart within 6 months
Went on temu £1.90 each. Which actually are a better color and so much thicker, better fit. 2 of which have been washed multiple times and have not faded compared to the rest of the seats.

Amazon and ebay are just platforms, so yes, some of it is the same. The ethical and safety concerns are exactly the same as buying directly from Temu.

The human appetite is potentially infinite. At least in our mind. It's not just that it hasn't been possible to indulge that, though, it's also been widely recognized that doing so is destructive. Not only to nature, but human communities, and individual people.

We however not only try to claim that this kind of consumption is "natural" therefore ok, we attempt to inflame it to the greatest degree possible. People learn to control their appetites by being taught to do so from childhood.

People can "want" whatever they like.

Yes. Well done.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/11/2023 10:04

@WannaLiveInABubble I mean you don't NEED dining chair covers do you? In what world do dining chairs need covers? I have never in my 25 years or so of adulthood looked at dining chairs and thought "what those really need is covers".

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/11/2023 10:09

Who cares that you don’t NEED dining chair covers. You don’t technically needs dining chairs, or a table.

Lots of people care actually. 20 dining chair covers is an immense amount of unnecessary stuff. My plain wooden dining chairs will outlast me.

Well Wooppee Shits for you.

Dining chair covers to me are actually not wasteful. They can cover worn chairs, saving you replacing the chairs, and can be washed.

Of all the things to chastise a person for

I've never in my years walked into a shop and thought I need a Dry Robe or a pair of Uggs but here we are. Everyone is different and likes different things.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/11/2023 10:41

We should all like the same things and it should be the taste of the select few highly strung on this thread!

Stroopwaffels · 25/11/2023 10:48

Now you're just being daft. Of course we don't all like the same things, taste varies and that's fine. And the way it has always been.

But trying to argue that it is anyone's "right" to indulge in buying dozens of clothes every month from Shein, in the full knowledge that they are not the best quality and not fit for reuse/reselling, or buying boxes and boxes of tat on Temu is just nuts. There is a huge impact of these habits not just on the planet but on local jobs too. Wilfully ignoring all that because you "want" to have endless tat for your child to open at Christmas is exceptionally short-sighted. Find other hobbies apart from mindlessly clicking on Temu/Shein?

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/11/2023 10:51

Actually it’s anyone’s right to buy whatever they want as long as it’s legal.

I take if you weave lentil jumpers for your kids for Christmas and buy nothing from a shop unless you’ve done in depth research into the ethics of that company?

Whats wrong with wanting things? Humans actually need very little - if you only purchased what we needed we’d have naff all. Even you buy things you want I bet?

The point of this thread appears to have gone entirely over your head

Stroopwaffels · 25/11/2023 10:53

And we're back to the "if you buy anything at all you have no right to comment". Such a lazy, uniformed argument. No point doing anything at all unless you live in a cave and knit your own yoghurt.

The lengths people will go to in order to justify their mindless consumption of tat.

zingally · 25/11/2023 10:56

I haven't used either of them, but have made plenty of purchases on Wish over the years, which is just the same. A couple of times, things have arrived broken or not as described, but they're really good about refunding.

Only lazy when it’s inconvenient to you right?

You can’t berate others for wanting things and for unethical buying when you probably buy a lot of stuff you want as well and don’t research everywhere you buy from.

I mean I don’t take holidays abroad, you do. I’m sure you don’t need to travel
abroad and contribute to something that destroys the planet, but you do. So why is that ok for you but someone else shouldn’t but from Shein or recycle their clothes?

No. The point of the thread is buying less, making conscious purchases rather than just buying whatever you want with little regard for human rights, the planet or the future.

But you’ve attacked someone for buying dining chair covers - now knowing how long they’ll use them, if they will reuse or recycle, just a bit of weirdness about one specific product.

Let’s face it - it’s about snobbery. High end retailers are just as unethical yet it’s only ever the cheap shops that get berated - or rather the people who use them

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/11/2023 11:04

@Oliotya is another one who preaches to care about the planet to the point they forgo what they want, but goes on abroad holidays on a plane

Have whatever opinion you like but at least have the decency to not be a massive hypocrite

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/11/2023 11:05

I mean you don’t NEED a holiday after all.

This is the problem with people who shame others for buying cheap - happy to expect others to do their but to the nth degree but not expect me not to have my holiday abroad! Again links in with the snobbery aspect.

Yeah. You got me. I've been abroad once in the last 5 years. I'm not perfect. I'm not jetting off daily just because I can.
