When we know how bad the environment is how much plastic and stuff ends up in land fill how poor the workers conditions are why are we supporting them. I see so many people doing big hauls of stuff. I know it’s cheap and maybe it’s all people can afford by you buy cheap you buy twice.

Also you buy cheap you buy twice isnt always true I say as I sit here in my 20 year old Primark jumper.

Edited

Same. And love my towels from there I bought 15 years ago as well, they don't make them like that anymore and prefer them to 'fancier' brands I've tried.

Ditto for my clothes, I've been wearing the same clothes for years.

HappySunday1 · 20/11/2023 17:43

I’m on about the people buying stuff they don’t need if you need a coat and can only afford a Shein one then get one but does everyone need a pack of some plastic crap

SuperSange · 20/11/2023 17:44

I've not bought clothes from them, but the bits I've bought for the house have been great. As good quality as going into stores.

Plankingplanks · 20/11/2023 17:44

@HappySunday1 you don't only have to buy plastic shite though do you? I bought a Xmas jumper from she in, had it for years.

HomeBird43 · 20/11/2023 17:44

i bought a load of Gabbys Dollhouse stuff from Temu for my daughters Christmas. It’s the same shite they sell in Smyths or on Amazon at a fraction of the price 🤷🏻‍♀️

KneeQuestion · 20/11/2023 17:44

Because its affordable.

Also its not all plastic tat.

Nchanged89 · 20/11/2023 17:44

ManateeFair · 20/11/2023 17:43

Also, I guarantee you that most high street items, and quite a lot of very expensive ones, are also made by people working in terrible conditions.

Exactly.
I can't imagine that any Chinese factory is a wonderful place to work.

HappySunday1 · 20/11/2023 17:42

I would want anything from temu I don’t want a house full of plastic badly made crap I’m currently trying to clear out my house don’t need to add more to it x

So it’s fine that by your own admission that your own house is filled with plastic tat. You just think that no one else should be buying cheap products?

Crabble · 20/11/2023 17:44

Stroopwaffels · 20/11/2023 17:41

Because it's cheap.

People want endless tat as cheaply as possible and are happy to turn a blind eye to data harvesting, slavery and the environment to fill their lives with that tat.

Don't give me "cost of living" - 99.9% of what is sold on Temu is not life's essentials which people cannot manage without.

I agree.

Doormatnomore · 20/11/2023 17:44

I wonder where everyone who can’t understand thinks the rest of high street clothes come from? Or what they are packaged in before you see them on the rails? Where is this sustainable ethical utopia.

LNY1986 · 20/11/2023 17:45

I have never shopped on either but I must say I absolutley DETEST Temu and have this irrational hatred for them due to all the 10+ crappy spam emails I am currently getting every single day.

Anybody who buys off them is a Judas in my eyes!

So don't buy it. I like my charging station that from Temu that does my phone, watch and headphones all in one go so I don't have to faff about with different chargers and plugs. A fraction of the cost on Amazon (and we can't argue that Amazon is any better ethically, they sell the same shit).

No they don't and you don't need to buy bags of plastic crap if you buy from Shein, it's not mandatory.

smilesup · 20/11/2023 17:46

Because people are thick. They don't give a shite about slave labour or dodgy chemicals being brought into their home or the environmental impact.
Shop on vinted if you are skint that's what lots of us do!

wokbun · 20/11/2023 17:46

I don't know anyone who has done a "haul" on shein or temu

gotomomo · 20/11/2023 17:46

Because people want shiny new things. They prioritise quantity over quality and are happy to throw away quickly.

Another thread had someone moaning their clothes were 2-3 years old, in years gone by that was normal but these days people want new clothes all the time.

I won't shop in such places, if I buy new (rare) it's something that will last years, I'm wearing dresses that are 10 years plus old and still look good, they were not super expensive (perhaps £50 then) but worth every penny in wears unlike these cheap outfits

I like plastic crap. I work hard for what I earn, and if I want to spend it on a plastic wrapping paper cutter why the hell shouldn't I?
I love shien, do an order every month, and even worse.... I'm committing the worst sin ever in the eyes of preachers like yourself OP
I clearpay it!

Acta · 20/11/2023 17:47

Where do you shop, OP?

I assume all the clothes you buy are only what you absolutely need. And I assume they're all made in the UK by well-paid workers with good contracts using only ethically sourced and produced materials.

I assume all your household items are also only things that you absolutely need and all are whittled by a well-paid crafts-person and from local wood which is totally sustainable.

Hope you're insurance pays out when it burns your house down because it hasn't had to meet British Standards for electrical equipment.

suitsyoumissus · 20/11/2023 17:47

"you buy cheap you buy twice" isn't even always true.

I don't use Temu, but I've got fleeces from Primark that are at least 8 years old and are still going strong. Whereas I've just chucked a Mango jumper that I wore quite a lot last winter (no more than the fleeces) and today I found a couple of holes in it.

Buying cheap stuff is buying disposable.

You could buy a M&S coat for £80 and keep it for 10 years. You want to get your moneys worth. It's decent quality.

Or buy a £15 Shein coat, it breaks. Or it's a crappy trend and you're embarrassed to wear it a year later. Now it's in the bin or languishing in oxfam.

HomeBird43 · 20/11/2023 17:47

Yup Klarna ftw!

Dabralor · 20/11/2023 17:47

People will say, what about the cost of living crisis etc.

However, when you see people harping on about their temu hauls etc, it's such unnecessary crap they've bought. Just more plastic to clog up the oceans with. It's so depressing.

Plankingplanks · 20/11/2023 17:44

@HappySunday1 you don't only have to buy plastic shite though do you? I bought a Xmas jumper from she in, had it for years.

I put it down to a lack of intelligence. It’s really not hard to judge the quality of something. I’ve had all sorts off shein and it’s all been fine, not tat. I’ve got garden furniture from there that I wasn’t expecting to be putting away for yet another year for the winter, everything’s lasted. And the only thing I’ve bought from there that was plastic was some solar lights (which have also lasted)

Needmorelego · 20/11/2023 17:48

My teenage daughter likes clothes from Shein, H+M and Primark.
Of the 3 - Shein seems to be the best quality.
