To think fireworks either need to be banned

Or made soundproof?
I have spent the last 5 hours trying to calm my terrified cat who has hid under my bed refusing to come out. My daughter woke up crying an hour ago as the fireworks were deafening and I haven’t been able to concentrate on a thing as it’s so noisy outside. Honestly been worse than NYE around here these past few days. Definitely have been going on until past 11PM also.

I think private displays should be banned for safety reasons but am happy to keep the organised ones. Nuisances differ household to household, personally I would only allow cats as pets if they were on indoor cats as they are terrible for wildlife and crap all over the place. However I am aware that they bring lots of happiness to people and it is very much just an issue I need to put up with

IceAndLemonPlease · 12/11/2023 21:39

My cat is 15 and all he does is sleep. Even if he was an indoor cat he would still be terrified. It’s been horrible seeing him so frightened.

It’s funny because I always enjoyed them as a child but the older I get, the more ludicrous it seems that this still happens.

  1. Dangerous in the wrong hands
  2. Harmful to the environment
  3. Scary for animals
I think within 10 years there will be a limit to organised displays only and perhaps only on a maximum of days. The last week has seen fireworks every night with Guy Fawkes night(s) and Diwali.
ShirleyPhallus · 12/11/2023 21:41

Yes, it’s been on and off for weeks now here. My poor dog has been terrified.

Absolutely no need whatsoever

HeavenCANTwait · 12/11/2023 21:43

It's Diwali today

Royalbloo · 12/11/2023 21:44

Yes

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/11/2023 21:45

Silent fireworks are the way forward.

Ballsbaill · 12/11/2023 21:45

The world doesn't stop for your cats. Bet they shit all over other people's gardens and cause a nuisance too.

Mindymomo · 12/11/2023 21:45

I’ve signed so many petitions in my life, but nothing gets done. My dog barks and was in the garden having a wee before bed the other night at 10 pm when a loud bang went off, he was petrified and ran inside and wouldn’t leave my side. Because some local school displays were cancelled due to rain, we now have continued fireworks here for the next couple of weeks. I just wish people would stick to the actual weekend near 5 November. It’s also Diwali so we’ve 5 days of fireworks. Our local facebook groups are going crazy with so many people arguing for and against them.

JeopardyMoose · 12/11/2023 21:46

I don’t get why they don’t just sell all quiet ones.

IceAndLemonPlease · 12/11/2023 21:47

I know it’s Diwali but neighbours have been setting them off from 4.30PM and still going now. Obviously not got a job to go to tomorrow. Same thing been happening since Halloween night. My cat is literally trembling under the bed and won’t eat or even come out for a wee. Daughter won’t settle and it’s just a piss take now. Much worse than NYE. I know people will call me a Karen but this is too much.

It's Diwali today

I'm sure the OP knows this.

YANBU OP, I do think they're far too loud and powerful nowadays.

Not like the little efforts that were around when I was a child.

JoeLovesGina · 12/11/2023 21:47

Fireworks were around long before you had your pets. I look forward to them as it means all the barking, yapping dogs I have to listen to every other day of the year get kept indoors.

Sandrine1982 · 12/11/2023 21:48

Man I'm with you! So so sick of the frigging fireworks!!

Sandrine1982 · 12/11/2023 21:51

Regardless of pets, what about children going to school tomorrow? Having to get up at 7am?

Ballsbaill · 12/11/2023 21:54

Harmful to the environment...is that a joke?

Pet food is responsible for a massive percentage of the global carbon foot print.

One pet cat generates an average of 310kg of CO2e per year. This is the equivalent of a 12 hour drive. There are 11 million cats in the UK. So multiply rhe 310kg by 11 million.

An area double the size of the UK is used to produce dry pet food for cats and dogs each year, a study shows.

If you care about the environment you wouldn't keep a cat or dog.

Sandrine1982 · 12/11/2023 21:54

@Ballsbaill What an utterly stupid thing to say. Are you comparing people using fireworks at random times / antisocial hours to living creatures like cats who haven't even asked to be here and live through this?

Ballsbaill · 12/11/2023 21:55

See my post about how harmful your living creature is. Quite right your cat didn't ask to be here. Get rid for the sake of the environment.

crankit · 12/11/2023 21:57

I don't think they should be banned but possibly an earlier time limit that they have to end. This time of year it's dark at 6pm so they don't need to still be going off past 8/9.

TreadLight · 12/11/2023 21:58

Modern day puritans wanting to ban anything that other people find fun!

SoloCat · 12/11/2023 21:58

They definitely need to be organised displays only. You always get far too many, too loud…it’s like a war zone in some areas.
There are always idiots causing trouble somewhere with them…think the fire brigade dread this time of year. I don’t blame them.

YANBU 100 percent. I have animals, they hate them but luckily I live in a village that doesn’t have many. I really feel for people who have mental health issues, PTSD and anxiety. I’ve had friends in the forces who really struggle with the noise.
Also all the wild animals, or any animal that is terrified so we can have pretty colours in the sky and loud bangs. The human race is so selfish.

Sandrine1982 · 12/11/2023 21:58

@Ballsbaill yes that's why we had him neutered. But we're not going to kill him just because people like you decided he's bad for the environment. We rescued him!

dumpkin · 12/11/2023 21:59

what about them?

AutumnComfort · 12/11/2023 22:00

There’s no excuse whatsoever for the, making banging sounds anymore.

I think displays ought to be private and licensed only. It’s not just pets, it’s wildlife as well 😢

Neriah · 12/11/2023 22:00

I have been to soundless displays. They are fantastic. I think they should all be organised displays and soundless. Sounding like a war zone is not a requirement. And banning public sales would keep them mostly out of the hands of hooligans - around here they are being let off at people and animals deliberately.
