To think fireworks either need to be banned

Or made soundproof?
I have spent the last 5 hours trying to calm my terrified cat who has hid under my bed refusing to come out. My daughter woke up crying an hour ago as the fireworks were deafening and I haven’t been able to concentrate on a thing as it’s so noisy outside. Honestly been worse than NYE around here these past few days. Definitely have been going on until past 11PM also.

@Tagyoureit should we cull all wild animals too as they crap everywhere and are possibly scared by fireworks too?

Tagyoureit · 13/11/2023 07:26

All the foxes that use my garden as toilet? Yes please!

I think you'll find you've built your home on top of theirs.

(I know you didn't personally build it, but you know that I mean)

My cat doesn’t care about fireworks but I’d definitely ban them apart from organised displays. Organised displays are safer and better and the fireworks aren’t going to fall into the wrong hands for misuse. They really aren’t that amazing in the first place.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 13/11/2023 15:01

I’m very much a cat person so biased in this way, but one animal who has fairly inoffensive poo and tends to bury it pooing in your garden, much like foxes, badgers, squirrels, birds, mice, rats and dogs with careless owners, isn’t really comparable to doing something purely for your leisure which is going to make most cats and for that matter people with PTSD absolutely cower with fear for nights on end, when it’s expensive, potentially dangerous and all you get out of it is “oooh” for two seconds.

Teegan89 · 13/11/2023 15:02

I hate fireworks and would absolutely support a ban. I hate the effect they have on animals, including wildlife and I don’t think the general public can be trusted. Did anyone see the absolute carnage in Nidderie, Scotland this year?

It's Diwali today

So??
Why do they HAVE to be SO loud??

ruby1957 · 13/11/2023 15:32

The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places. You must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for: Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight. New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am.

I would question why there are differant rules for differant occasions? 11pm to 7am (nighttime) should apply across the board.

LemonLight · 13/11/2023 16:06

I really enjoy fireworks, but I like the sparkly colours and how pretty they are, I don't particularly like how loud they are. I wouldn't want them banned but think they should be better regulated (unsure how) and silent.

Easy. Bring in regulations to ban noisy fireworks. Only silent (as near as) are legal to be made or sold in the UK.

RubyRoseVioletLillyJasminePeach · 13/11/2023 20:49

You can't have silent fireworks give over!

RubyRoseVioletLillyJasminePeach · 13/11/2023 20:50

Ballsbaill · 12/11/2023 21:45

The world doesn't stop for your cats. Bet they shit all over other people's gardens and cause a nuisance too.

Right!!!
Neither my cat nor my dog are in the least bit fussed. We love fireworks. Go figure.

Of course you can - many are silent (or as near as) - they gently fizzle etc. no need for the bangs at all.

Pokinganose · 12/11/2023 22:20

I can see both sides but as a tip for pet owners you can buy pet sized weighted blankets which are meant to help with anxiety and fireworks if that's any help to anyone on here.

Aw. With little mini headphones 😊

LlynTegid · 13/11/2023 20:55

Organised displays only, a few designated days, time restrictions on those days. That would be my choice.

November 5th, nearest Saturday, a day for Diwali and New Year's Eve, maybe there is one or two other days, so 6 days a year max.

It's not one animal though when a number of your neighbours each have several cats. And the place they choose to bury their poo is in my vegetable garden which is completely disgusting. Cat shit with your asparagus?

I've never had badgers or foxes poo in my garden because I live in the countryside where they stay away from people. You really can't compare a mouse poo with cat poo.

Do you find torturing animals fun?

My pets have never had an issue with fireworks. There's a lot owners can do to mitigate it but many don't bother.

And of course many people are bothered by other people's pets year round but entitled owners never seem to care about that.

A dog being yappy or a cat pooing in someone’s garden doesn’t deserve to be scared half to death by loud noises though

Really you can't see why at new year fireworks would be being set off after 11pm?

shivawn · 13/11/2023 21:47

I live in Ireland where fireworks are banned but they've been going off around here pretty much every day for the last month.

There's one house in particular that does it every single night, really cheap shitty fireworks that are just a loud bang and a little fizzle of light, I don't understand what thrill they're still getting out of it at this stage.

Harmful to the environment...is that a joke?

Pet food is responsible for a massive percentage of the global carbon foot print.

One pet cat generates an average of 310kg of CO2e per year. This is the equivalent of a 12 hour drive. There are 11 million cats in the UK. So multiply rhe 310kg by 11 million.

An area double the size of the UK is used to produce dry pet food for cats and dogs each year, a study shows.

If you care about the environment you wouldn't keep a cat or dog.

Edited

No cars here. Means we could have two cats living for 26 years each before we'd get even remotely near the environmental impact of two cars being driven for work and a single seaside trip for a year. And that's before taking into account the manufacture and repairs for the cars.

If you care about the environment, you'd leave the bloody cats alone and look at the bloody great planks people have in their eyes.

MamaMissions · 13/11/2023 21:58

Where I live in London I've seen teens throwing lit fireworks at peoples cars, front doors etc thinking it's funny. I didn't used to mind them previously, but now I just think they are being handled so unsafely

Caffeineislife · 13/11/2023 22:01

Absolutely organised professional displays only. Also low bangs/ silent fireworks only. Limit on dates and times for use. I say professional displays as the local pub did an "organised" amateur display and it was carnage with fireworks going into the crowd, people standing too close to the launch area and people getting hit by debris. A professional display would have proper procedures and checks in place.

There is no need for the general public to be using them- they are an explosive and dangerous in the wrong hands. Far too many teens/ hooligans using them and throwing them into crowds or at people. Never mind the impact on animals, veterans and litter.

A lot wouldn't be if their owners managed the situation better.

But regardless I suspect the majority would say that people being tormented daily by barking/dangerous dogs or cats destroying their gardens and killing wildlife is more of a problem.

ChipButtiesRule · 13/11/2023 22:40

My own dog snored through the fireworks the other night - I've never had a pet scared of them.

I'd still fully support greater controls over them (organised displays only) for the sake of safety as well as the farm and wild animals and humans who find them terrifying (eg noise associated PTSD sufferers).
