To think the new John Lewis Christmas advert is a bit shit

Apologies if there’s already a thread, couldn’t see one when I skimmed over AIBU.

It’s just not great IMO. Definitely didn’t make me feel sad, or happy, or nostalgic, or excited for Christmas or any emotion other than a bit meh.

Just me?

YABU: it’s great!
YANBU: it’s not great and there have been much better ones

You haven't seen Little Shop 🌱of Horrors?

Sherma · 10/11/2023 19:44

I really liked it.

LoreleiG · 10/11/2023 19:45

I like it.

LoreleiG · 10/11/2023 19:45

Although I don’t completely get it.

SophieHope7 · 10/11/2023 19:48

I'm with you. I didn't get it but I do get starting new traditions, that bit I resonated with.

AhBiscuits · 10/11/2023 19:51

I do like it but it's not their best.

PicaK · 10/11/2023 19:57

I like the JL ad. I like the feeling of letting go, just going right I'm going to watch and see where it takes me. I was a bit wtf with the plant. Then when it got to the final message I melted
It really spoke to me.
Divorced - ex is coming over with the kids Xmas morning (they always do Xmas eve at his) - to cook eggs benediction and watch them open presents before me and kids go off to my mum's.
Felt JL really got my life. Or the ad guys did. 😂

shellyleppard · 10/11/2023 19:58

It made me smile

VickyEadieofThigh · 10/11/2023 19:59

No, it's shit.

The Amazon one, however, is beautiful.

GreyhpundGirl · 10/11/2023 19:59

I loved it, it's a bit different and has the 'Christmas message' I went into a Waitrose today and they had some merchandise, it was lovely x

NeelyOHara1 · 10/11/2023 20:00

The Christmas advert nonsense needs to go in the bin with the Christmas jumper. Bah humbug 😛

Whiterose23 · 10/11/2023 20:03

I really enjoyed the advert and it’s made me want to introduce my DD’s to the little shop of horrors film

Ovaltiner · 10/11/2023 20:11

I couldn't be bothered to watch to the end, way too long (although on YouTube; possibly there is a shorter version during ad breaks?)

I am somewhat bah humbug about the JL Christmas advert hype, though. I can't stand the way they've made it out to be some sort of long-standing Christmas tradition when it's really not.

It's up there with the relentless building of the Percy Pig brand.

MrsSunshine2b · 10/11/2023 20:16

I thought it was hilarious. My favourite/least favourite depending how you look at it is the Allegro one about the Granddad learning English to meet his grandson in the UK for the first time- it turns me into a blubbering mess every time I see it. I love Xmas Ad season.

This ^

I find it hard to believe anything will beat the Amazon one this year and I bet it cost a fraction of the price of the John Lewis one.

letstrythatagain · 10/11/2023 20:19

I think it's great. Kids loved it!

maddiemookins16mum · 10/11/2023 20:20

They’ve had better.

Bring back Monty 😊

jc12689 · 10/11/2023 20:25

Like it or not. You started a thread talking about an Christmas advert and talking about John Lewis so it has definitely done the trick.
Almost doesn't matter whether it's shit or not.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 10/11/2023 20:25

@maybein2022

ive seen 3 threads so far 😂but the search function is so 💩 it's not surprising you didn't find them!

I actually like it, but I think you need to actually watch it properly to get/see it.

people were saying he 'eats the presents' he doesn't!! Things like that.

id like to buy a plant, but didn't like the merch on the JL website

& yes, I love the Amazon one too & the Dawn French M&as Christmas food too

Catsmere · 10/11/2023 20:27

My only exposure to it (I'm in Australia) is when it flashes up on MN, and I think "Who's the unfortunate child with Boris Johnson hair?"

Mytattooisbiggerthanyours · 10/11/2023 20:33

YANBU OP it’s pants.

It’s a rubbish advert and the tacky merchandise all over Waitrose aimed at kids (encouraging consumerism) is a really low blow.

They’ve totally failed imo. I didn’t even get the message. New traditions? Like a Venus fly trap? So it stays in their garden and comes out every year at Christmas? I don’t get it.

hattie43 · 10/11/2023 20:50

The beginning made it look charming with the little boy rummaging in the antiques but it descended from there . What has a mantis plant got to do with Xmas .

A retail company encouraging consumerism. Whatever next?

BaconAndAvocado · 10/11/2023 20:52

I really like it, it’s different but still has a cosy feel.
