To think the new John Lewis Christmas advert is a bit shit

Apologies if there’s already a thread, couldn’t see one when I skimmed over AIBU.

It’s just not great IMO. Definitely didn’t make me feel sad, or happy, or nostalgic, or excited for Christmas or any emotion other than a bit meh.

Just me?

YABU: it’s great!
YANBU: it’s not great and there have been much better ones

Was it Tesco who shamed somebody for not giving to Captain Tom on their Xmas ad. Maybe they should do an update of that under the circumstances!

It was the 'no naughty list' ad. Definitely legs there for a good parody ad.

I like it. It doesn’t move me like the one about the elderly man and the moon but it’s different and that’s what I expect from JL.

I was a bit nonplussed the first time I saw it, but now that I've watched it again I really like it. However the Amazon Christmas advert is the best by far this year IMHO.

I absolutely hate it and think that plant is nightmarish. I get what message they were trying to put across but I didn't find it cute or funny at all.

Not that I'm a huge fan of John Lewis ads in general tbf. I prefer more tongue in cheek ones like this years ETSY ads or the IKEA 'silence the critics' ad from a few years back.

Nah, don’t like it. It’s confusing and there’s no emotional payoff. You need a really simple story - that’s why the Amazon one is great, also the 2011 one and my fave is the snowman’s journey one.

Now it’s become a thing so they have to try to one-up themselves every year and other shops are doing too, so it gets harder to find ideas for it - but the Amazon one is perfect.

Venus fly traps just aren’t Christmassy. Have your presents chewed up and spat out isn’t Christmassy. I work in a creative industry and I feel like it’s one of those drawing board ideas that’s too complicated and quirky for the sake of it and should have been binned.
