To think the new John Lewis Christmas advert is a bit shit

Apologies if there’s already a thread, couldn’t see one when I skimmed over AIBU.

It’s just not great IMO. Definitely didn’t make me feel sad, or happy, or nostalgic, or excited for Christmas or any emotion other than a bit meh.

Just me?

YABU: it’s great!
YANBU: it’s not great and there have been much better ones

@hattie43 I agree. Only the first few seconds had any merit. The rest was just not very heart warming.

TheKeatingFive · 10/11/2023 20:54

Awful. Tricky as they changed their ad agency this year.

But honestly, wtf?

Hesma · 10/11/2023 21:20

It’s dreadful

A retail company encouraging consumerism. Whatever next?

But the whole point of Christmas ads is that for that moment only the retailers want to appear that they’re not selling ‘stuff’, they’re selling what matters: family, love, friendship, new traditions blah blah blah.

To then introduce a load of merch and flog it to death kind of defeats the sentiment. Yuk.

maybein2022 · 10/11/2023 21:30

Mixed opinions! I totally get that it’s an advert, but the crap merch that I saw in Waitrose makes it even worse IMO. NOTHING will beat ‘The Long Wait’ one in I think 2011 and even ‘The Man on the Moon’ made my shed a tear or two. The Bear and the Hare was even better than this year!

Made me smile too - LittleShopofHorrors'esque

Wasn't keen on the song though - it needed a gospel trio!

vincettenoir · 10/11/2023 21:32

Yeah it’s shit. I like the one where there’s a party and Graham Norton turns up with pud.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 10/11/2023 22:04

YABU. It's not a bit shit, it's utter shite. I'm passed off the plant takes away the joy of them unwrapping their own presents and does it for them then spits them out. Who wants that?! What if they got damaged??

FlutteryButterfly · 10/11/2023 22:06

VickyEadieofThigh · 10/11/2023 19:59

No, it's shit.

The Amazon one, however, is beautiful.

Yes With you on that!

Totally agree

YourNameGoesHere · 10/11/2023 20:18

This ^

I find it hard to believe anything will beat the Amazon one this year and I bet it cost a fraction of the price of the John Lewis one.

😂

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 10/11/2023 22:14

I love the Amazon one too. A lovely reminder that even the elderly have an inner child who needs nurturing and deserves to have fun just as much as anyone else but just needs some adjustments. To be fair my bum needs one of those cushions and I'm in my 40s😩

Sockmate123 · 10/11/2023 22:15

I think its crap and I've loved every single other one. Disappointing this year. Everyone at work today was saying the same

MissMillyFluff · 10/11/2023 22:16

I've seen little shop of horrors. I still don't get the significance of Christmas and this strange advert. Not impressed 🤔

Halfemptyhalfling · 10/11/2023 22:19

It was fine. The m&s general one was horrendous including its message. If you don't like something change it without being nasty.

Luddite26 · 10/11/2023 22:22

I'm just refusing to buy into the Xmas store ads hype which is easy not having a TV but they do keep flashing up on my phone. I agree with pp about the building of their own brand and what a shit emperor's New clothes con job it is and all the Percy Pig tat is just them trying to make us believe the hype.
I'm not bag humbug and I love shopping but can't stand this Xmas ad hype nonsense. I have enjoyed the odd JL ad in the past but it's so forced now.
Nothing has felt right since the irony of losing the great George Michael on Christmas Day 2016.

HangTheJib · 10/11/2023 22:54

At least the song isn't some slowed down wistful cover version.

Other than that it's meh. I don't like the Amazon one either. Too schmaltzy.

But they're just TV ads and the annual hype over a John Lewis ad was getting a bit silly.

ScatteredShattered · 10/11/2023 22:59

Didn’t love it, the first scene in the shop was promising and then it went weird, why?!

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 10/11/2023 23:11

Not a fan of it… at all.

Then I go into Waitrose to see a fluffy line up of furry Venus fly traps.

I just don’t get it.

orangadey · 10/11/2023 23:25

I dislike it too. What is the message? It's weird.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 10/11/2023 23:33

I thought it started really nicely, and then it just went weird and I felt like I'd missed something. Reminded me of the of JL advert earlier this year of the little boy trashing the house 'oh but don't worry, you've got insurance.'

That said, anything is better than the M&S one. Absolutely tone deaf IMO. 'Worried about the cost of Christmas? Watching this under a duvet because you can't afford to put the heating on? Look at these rich & famous people with their glamorous lives trashing stuff for no good reason.'

MsLumley · 10/11/2023 23:37

Agree the Amazon one is utterly heart-warning and beautiful. The JL one - meh. Didn’t really give me the Christmassy feels. But I am a traditionalist. And where are the men? Do men not exist any more?

Sellingbedtime · 10/11/2023 23:41

It isn't their best. Makes me wonder if they have finally peaked and this is the slow demise of the JL Christmas advert.

Mirrormeback · 10/11/2023 23:43

It did nothing for me

Nothing

IStandWithACrutch · 10/11/2023 23:50

My child loves it.
