Last weekend my husband, daughter and I went shopping for winter coats. I was really looking for a nice trenchcoat or ideally a woollen winter coat.
We walked past a luxury brand store that is known for really nice coats. Husband knows I love their coats and suggested we went inside. Normally I wouldn't even consider buying such an expensive clothing item, but husband insisted that I try on the coat I liked. He wanted to treat me if I ended up loving it, as he said it was a timeless item and he wanted to buy a nice Christmas/birthday gift that he knew I'd enjoy for years.

We asked the shop assistant for a size up in the coat I liked. It just didn't fit very nicely. Shop assistant then suggested I try on a couple of other (much more expensive[ coats. Those were really straight fitting coats though and I told her I preferred the other coat because it had a waist belt and didn't look so baggy.
She then told me "that coat maybe it was for you 20 years ago, now it's not for you".

My husband and I found this incredibly rude, but were too shocked to say anything. It ruined the shopping for me though, so we left immediately and husband told her that we didn't want a coat anymore. He was really angry. I am now 44 years old and tried the size 14, which fitted but pulled across the chest. Surely that's not incredibly old or fat to deserve a remark like that? Also what's with the '20 years ago' I really don't even look that old!

AIBU that I found this incredibly offensive and also I think that had I looked really rich she would never have said anything like that? Also I really don't want a coat from that store anymore...

@Cupcakemum79

Well she was rude and unprofessional. Do retail staff still get commission on their sales? If so she's lost out personally as well as cost the store money, not a good idea in this financial climate. And, perhaps, will put off friends/family who might have considered buying from them... I'm sure you'll get better elsewhere- it's not like there's no competition. Also Black Friday is coming soon? 🌹

So you are now referring to body type rather than age? I said that my neice and I have very similar figures, we are both size 10. She looks amazing in nike joggers and cropped tops showing her midrif. I do look ridiculous. The only variable here is age.

not quite

the only variable is your attitude 😉

guessing it's the poster who believe that women have an expiry date, and that we should all jump into "granny clothes" as soon as we reach a certain birthday 😂

Please do better these 'jokes' are a bit rubbish 🤔

Those of you criticising the brand as "chavvy" and because it used to be admired by people who buy clothes from market stalls - you do realise you are expressing disgusting class prejudice, and that maybe OP doesn't think it would be the worst thing in the world to dress like your stereotype of a working class person?

OP, the salesperson was amazingly rude - I just can't think what can have inspired her to say it. Just having an awful day perhaps? Or is it possible she misinterpreted something you or your husband said as rude? I'm not trying to victim blame, it just seems like so likely to generate a complaint if you just insult your customer like this......

memyselfi · 06/11/2023 17:13

The lady in my nearest Gucci always manages to insult me. She does it with such flair though and with this beautiful accent , she has me in stitches.
Last time I bought a belt and was unsure of the size , she 'congratulated' me on being thinner than she thought Grin

PegasusReturns · 06/11/2023 17:20

I’m sorry you had such an awful experience.

I really rate Burberry - I think they recovered beautifully from their Daniela Westbrook blip and I’ve never had anything but absolutely exceptional service from them.

You absolutely should complain and I suspect they will take it very seriously. They usually do customer service brilliantly.

I'm not sure it's "classist" as it was adopted in the 90s by football hooligans, so a lot of people wanted to disassociate themselves from that look.

I did really like the cardigan linked up thread, but 2.5k for a cardi is beyond my budget unfortunately.

AsTreesWalking · 06/11/2023 17:23

Sorry you had such an unpleasant encounter, but your husband sounds absolutely lovely! You are obviously lovely too, hope you find a beautiful coat.

TheBunnyLover · 06/11/2023 17:25

I rate burberry too-I have a lot from there, but their mascara is rubbish!

Well said. There are some very rude posters on this thread. The OP liked the coat and that's all that matters. She's probably gone off it now though.

vernatheraven · 06/11/2023 17:54

Hope you ok op.

The shop assistant was rude.

If you're not getting that particular coat what will you choose instead.

Very rude OP-I'd definitely take this further.

And I love Burberry! And have a beige trench coat from there. Not sure why people are saying It's 'chavvy'? The Royal Family wear Burberry.

Always new the royal family were chavs!

Well maybe she had a bad day... but really, she could have been honest using a less rude remark. Also, I expect better than that from both myself and team members at work, having a bad day is no excuse to be rude to clients.

Just because the royal family can get away with some things, being the royal family and all that, doesn't make chavs any less chavy.

Cupcakemum79 · 06/11/2023 18:25

@SocksAndTheCity yes that is what I was hoping for as well. Good classic quality that would last me for years. Trenchcoats never go out of style right and I since I was constantly wearing my cheaper version I thought it would be worth the investment..

That's absolutely appalling. I made a complaint to a well known high street pharmacy/store as my DD was ripped to shreds by a very nasty young woman behind the pharmacy counter. I got a £50 voucher as an apology and one for DD as well... and the Manager was very keen to assure me that the woman had been moved elsewhere in store after receiving further training.

Definitely! I have a black cashmere and merino blend trench which is at least ten and probably closer to fifteen years old, and I've worn it so much I'm amazed it hasn't fallen to pieces (I've had the lining repaired once where the sleeve joins the armhole).

I didn't buy it in person though, so I can't vouch for the shop in that case. I see there's one very like it still on the website Smile
