I am a member of Republic.
Republic are a pressure group that wants to see an end to the Monarchy.
The Monarchy is an institution in the UK.
I will try ti undermine it.

That makes me an extremist.

Revealed: plan to brand anyone ‘undermining’ UK as extremist | UK security and counter-terrorism | The Guardian

Government officials have drawn up deeply controversial proposals to broaden the definition of extremism to include anyone who “undermines” the country’s institutions and its values, according to documents seen by the Observer.

Oh - and this thread is NOT about the Monarchy.
It's the definition of extremism and what comes from it.

We are rapidly becoming a totalitarian state. Our civil liberties and right to peaceful protest have been eroded further and further since the Blair days. It’s extremely worrying.

LydiaTomos · 04/11/2023 21:57

I'm a member of Yes Cymru, a pressure group campaigning for Welsh independence. They probably think I'm an extremist too.

Exasperatednow · 04/11/2023 21:58

We need an election.

What about SNP?
Yorkshire Independence Party?
I think we should abolish the House of Lords.

(I think I am on a list)

It's chilling. I'm a republican too.

...proposals to broaden the definition of extremism to include anyone who “undermines” the country’s institutions and its values

Last time I checked, one of this country's values was freedom of speech.

If so, changing the law like this would make it illegal to propose to change the law like this.

Bit awkward.

Surely, by that definition the Tory Government are also extremists.

Whether under Boris Johnson or Rishi Sunak, they all undermine our institutions and our values.

Doggymummar · 04/11/2023 22:18

I'm in a union, am I an extremist?

mumda · 04/11/2023 22:24

All Hail president Blair.

ttcat37 · 04/11/2023 22:29

The tories make anything they don’t like illegal. Protesting? Illegal. Tents? Illegal. Don’t like sponging ‘royals’? Illegal

EveSix · 04/11/2023 22:33

I donate to subversive environmental causes.
Oh dear.
Learning that surveillance is carried out into the online activities of the nation's teaching assistants has made me think anything is now possible and to be expected.

Alltheyearround · 04/11/2023 22:35

Was just going to post - tents, yes being homeless and not wanting to sit in the pissing rain - obviously undermining British values.

It's scary how many freedoms have been eroded, with so little fuss. Chilling.

TempestTost · 04/11/2023 22:36

A lot will depend on the definition of undermining they use in the legislation.

TeaGinandFags · 04/11/2023 22:41

I don't mind that your views are opposite to mine. Differing opinions are what make life interesting and help us question our own views.

What I don't like is when people think tjat they can impose their divergent views on others. Using the monarchy as an example non monarchists are entitled to express their opinions but not to try and ruin the day of monarchists when celebrating the coronation.

It's one thing to make a protest but quite another to try and ruin the occasion for those who want to celebrate it.

That's my two penn'orth.

Fionaville · 04/11/2023 22:44

I home educate for ideological reasons. I wonder if I could be classed as an extremist as I'm 'undermining the countries institutions and values' That's if we count the education system as an institution. I definitely undermine it, as I think it's outdated and not fit for purpose.
Its a slippery slope calling people extremists because they don't hold some of our institutions in high regard.

dontbenastyhaveapasty · 04/11/2023 22:51

Fantastic, we all get to send BoJo, Cummings, Baroness Mone, and every other corrupt MP and VIP lane sponger to prison for undermining British values !

I wonder which British values those drafting the legislation are thinking of? I suspect the Tory party’s idea of what British values consist of may differ from what most people think they are.

Free speech, freedom to be unconventional, respect for others with differing views to your own; alongside an expectation that you will be honest, trustworthy, decent and not corrupt?

No, thought not.

How’ve you figured that one out?

therealcookiemonster · 04/11/2023 23:07

I think brexit was batshit and we should have another referendum. I also think that the monarchy is completely irrelevant in this day and age. i also prefer continental food to british. does this make me an extremist now?

Throwhandsupintheair · 04/11/2023 23:24

British values are whatever Braverman, Sunak, Rees Mogg, Gove and Jenrick say they are.

You also only have freedom of speech when you’re in agreement with them.

Are we going to get a general election before we fully circle the toilet bowl FFS?!

HaveALaff · 04/11/2023 23:26

I always thought that freedom of speech was a British value ...

Clearly not since they are trying to ban protests and strikes!

Can I ask what your reasons are? I live in a country where home education isn't legal so I find it really interesting to talk to people who do it.

Janinejones · 04/11/2023 23:51

Are you sure you would be classed as an extremist? What are the criteria? Have they published any details?
Political Parties in Scotland have a fairly strong chance of dividing the Union. Do you think seriously think they will be labelled 'extremist'?
An attention grab of a title late at night but what is the substance to it?

BIossomtoes · 04/11/2023 23:52

Bit rich from the party that attempted to illegally prorogue Parliament, isn’t it?
