To think if you can manage a piece of fish, you can eat 4 fishfingers

Had fishfingers over the weekend and it reminded me of the thread about how many ff is enough/a portion and made me wonder why people could eat a piece of boxed fish, say youngs for example, but would struggle to eat more than 3 fishfingers? Or could eat a steak but wouldn't have more than 2 sausages?

Is it just because its one piece of fish/steak, but a perceived greedy number of fishfingers or sausages?

If you are posting just to say you only eat a quarter of a piece of triangle fish and anything else is greedy, I ate all 10 fishfingers in the box on sunday.

I'm sure it says on the box that 3 or 4 is a 'portion'. I always have 4 not sure if that's too much.

BarnacleBeasley · 31/10/2023 13:40

Those triangle fish things are tiny though, I'd need two of them.

MidnightOnceMore · 31/10/2023 13:42

Think sausages are completely different to steak due to the calories/fat levels.

Fish fingers are not as light as plain fish.

So I think they're different.

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 31/10/2023 13:43

4 or 5 fish fingers here with some sort of potato & veg, sausages are usually 4 if they are thick or 5 if they are the chipolata type, again with potato/rice and veg.

LoneFemaleTraveller · 31/10/2023 13:43

I think you have a disordered view of food, op.

SleepingisanArt · 31/10/2023 13:45

There's a lot more coating on 4 fish fingers than on a single piece of fish. I can eat a decent sized steak but only 2 sausages because of the fat and other 'filler' in them - prefer steak too!

If you are satisifed after eating, if you are not overstuffed, its not too much, its just right.

This is sort of what I'm wondering about, if people that only eat say 2, only eat that many because they think 4 is greedy, or 2 is an appropriate number, but they are actually still hungry.

Depends what else you’re having.

5 posts, that’s all it took! 🙄

I’d say 3-4 is about right for an adult, 2 for a kid.

but I hear what you’re saying op re the people who say “oh I can only look sideways at sausage because looking at it full on is too much”!

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 31/10/2023 13:49

Four seems a sensible potion. Four fits in a wrap with room for other stuff.

Plasmodesmata · 31/10/2023 13:50

Four fish fingers have a greater surface area to volume ratio than a single piece so you might get a surfeit of orange breadcrumbs.
I'm having a fish finger sandwich this evening will have 5, between slices of white bread.

ComtesseDeSpair · 31/10/2023 13:50

Perception is an aspect of appetite: it’s why people who eat from smaller plates eat less food yet still report feeling just as satisfied as people who eat bigger portions on bigger plates. If you think of two sausages or fish fingers as the portion you should have, they’ll seem adequate.

BoohooWoohoo · 31/10/2023 13:51

Sausages come in packs of 8 so 2 each for a family of 4 sounds sensible. You can buy 2 packs of bigger packs sometimes but I suspect that some eat 2 for that reason. You can have more lean steak for the same calories so I'd go for the steak instead.

Quitelikeit · 31/10/2023 13:52

I could easily eat 10 fish fingers 🤣🤣 but that’s 500 calories and I’m on a diet so stick to 4 and a bag of veg

Needmorelego · 31/10/2023 14:19

6 fish fingers, 4 potato waffles and massive blob of tomato sauce.
Best meal ever.
I would have no problem eating an entire 10 pack though @YesIProbablyAmGreedySoWhat because fish fingers are the best.

sollenwir · 31/10/2023 14:23

I am an adult with a normal appetite and I honestly can never eat more than 2 FF at a time regardless of what else is or isn't on my plate - that said I only eat the haddock ones so they are maybe mysteriously more filling than the 'white fish' or Pollok varieties. DH and DS (teen) eat 3 at a time. I could eat a whole piece of haddock or even a whole battered haddock from the chippy though.

My accompaniments of choice are chips and beans.

I wouldn't have more than two sausages or fish fingers. Just because they're not as nice as steak or fish so I'd want less and more of whatever I'm having it with it. I guess I could eat ten but I wouldn't want to.

VeridicalVagabond · 31/10/2023 14:31

I honestly don't know, weird isn't it?

I can eat a huge stonking great piece of haddock or cod as big as my arm, but 4 fish fingers would be my limit. It's not like I'm full to my eyeballs after 4, I just don't want any more. I think it's a long buried memory of my mam telling me having more than X number of anything is greedy and unacceptable (she got to decide what was an appropriate amount and what was greedy, and it seemed completely arbitrary, but my brain still sticks to her limits)

I'd have 5 ff and 3 waffles, but then beans or mushy peas too, and a pickled onion.

Orangeandgold · 31/10/2023 14:32

Sounds like my DD. She cannot stomach fish fingers or sausages but can do a good steak and loovesss well cooked fresh fish!

I think some people are more sensitive to fatty foods than others or get full quicker. As someone else has said stale and fish and very light whilst fish fingers and sausages are more filling

My 11 month old baby would eat 2 fish fingers given the chance 😂 so think your appetite is definitely on the lower size not 'normal'...

HorseDentist · 31/10/2023 14:36

My Fishfinger box (Lidl omega 3 ones) says 5 is a portion. I was quite surprised at that because even as a greedy person I don't think I would manage that many with sides. Bread/chips/peas etc.

I have already stated that I have an average appetite, well among the people I know anyway. You cannot really draw conclusions based solely on one food tbh, especially a food I can take or leave!
