To think if you can manage a piece of fish, you can eat 4 fishfingers

Had fishfingers over the weekend and it reminded me of the thread about how many ff is enough/a portion and made me wonder why people could eat a piece of boxed fish, say youngs for example, but would struggle to eat more than 3 fishfingers? Or could eat a steak but wouldn't have more than 2 sausages?

Is it just because its one piece of fish/steak, but a perceived greedy number of fishfingers or sausages?

If you are posting just to say you only eat a quarter of a piece of triangle fish and anything else is greedy, I ate all 10 fishfingers in the box on sunday.

It depends on the size of the steak or piece of fish too! I'd only eat a piece of fish or meat about the size of 3-4 fish fingers, so to me they're the same. I agree it would be weird to eat a 3kg Tbone steak but then moan about 3 sausages. A fist size piece of venison fillet on the other hand...

Wwwnothingdotcom · 31/10/2023 14:49

If someone served me 2/3 fish fingers I would eat even the chef😂

Re "pack says portion". Packs have portions amended so calories don't sound that wrong. It's in no way nutritional advice. It's so the "lights" on front can stay in green or yellow per portion

HideousKinky · 31/10/2023 14:55

Fish comes in triangles??
(not point of thread I know but can someone explain?)

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 31/10/2023 14:56

I tend to eat half portions (bariatric surgery) and would have 2 fishfingers so I'd deem 4 fish fingers to be a standard portion. I could eat a bigger piece of fish as there's either no breadcrumbs, or the fish has a bigger mass so I can remove the breadcrumbs easily.

I can eat about 6oz of steak or 1.5sausages but I wouldn't feel good after the sausages. So about 3 would be a normal portion.

Different foods have different densities and ingredients vary between them.

5 posts, that’s all it took! 🙄

I’d say 3-4 is about right for an adult, 2 for a kid.

but I hear what you’re saying op re the people who say “oh I can only look sideways at sausage because looking at it full on is too much”!

Yes, I wasn't referring to the specifics with the fish fingers but the whole post.

SisterAgatha · 31/10/2023 15:02

I thought of that thread as well last night!!! Because I ate 4 fish fingers for dinner and remember saying at the time I’d eat 3.

Kayte198999 · 31/10/2023 15:03

I just ate a piece of boxed fish for lunch so feel like I can answer this comfortably. 4 fish fingers for dinner, 3 for lunch and always 3 sausages, only 4 if very hungry. I've never thought about eating a whole box of 10 fish fingers but comfortably could across two or three meals.

I guess the thing with fish fingers vs breaded fish is that there is more surface area in several fish fingers so it seems like more bread whereas the piece of fish is thicker so seems like a lot more fish, which is surely the best bit

SisterAgatha · 31/10/2023 15:04

Also fish and chip shop fish - I’d eat half a portion of fish. Share it with my mum or my eldest. DH would eat a whole fish.

but youngs or birdseye haddock, I’d only have one and that’s about 4 fish fingers sized I’d say.

MassageForLife · 31/10/2023 15:04

I could happily eat four, with half a tin of custard 😁

s4usagefingers · 31/10/2023 15:05

Fish fingers and sausages are full of “filler” and fat and carbs. Steak and fish are not.

whatapity · 31/10/2023 15:06

It depends on the fishfingers? The large sort from Waitrose fishmonger you could have two or three. The standard size I'd prefer four or five.

Oldermum84 · 31/10/2023 15:07

I would eat 5 ff and 4 sausages.

GreyTS · 31/10/2023 15:08

But steak and grilled fish are actual food whereas sausages and fish fingers are over processed white that should be eaten sparingly. I'm not going to pretend I can't or don't eat a sausage sandwich occasionally but 10 fish fingers, and the others poster with the 4 waffles!! Wtf! I'd have stomach pains for hours after that. I can however eat a huge dinner, ie an entire plateful of roast chicken, roast potatoes and veg. Obviously your weight etc will have an affect on your appetite and ability to eat quantities of food

Verv · 31/10/2023 15:09

5 fish fingers for me but I could eat 10 without blinking an eye.
Sausages are one of my favourite foods so 3 but again, I could polish off a packet no bother.

Moonlightsonatas · 31/10/2023 15:15

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference cod fish fingers are delicious, really crunchy coating. Pack of 8 does me and DH perfectly!

Needmorelego · 31/10/2023 15:22

@GreyTS what's wrong with 4 waffles? It's kinda the same amount if they were chips.
If I have Smiley Faces instead I have half a pack 🤣
Yes I have the diet of a 4 year old.....

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 31/10/2023 15:22

Four fishfingers is perfect for a sandwich.
I'll have three sausages for dinner, but then if there is only one left I will also eat that on its own later, if I'm in a mood with the dog.

MassageForLife · 31/10/2023 15:24

s4usagefingers · 31/10/2023 15:05

Fish fingers and sausages are full of “filler” and fat and carbs. Steak and fish are not.

The best steak is marbled with fat.

The best sausages are 97-99% pork.

Fish fingers aren't full of filler - they have a breadcrumb coating, but other than that, it's just fish.

OrganicAlchemy · 31/10/2023 15:25

4 average fingers are approx 235 cals so I suppose it would depend on what you're having it with?

I would happily eat a whole box tbh 😋

Crikeyalmighty · 31/10/2023 15:28

I frequently have 4 M&S gluten free Ff (great they are too- very chunky) - I like it with mash and garden peas and tartare sauce

Passthecake30 · 31/10/2023 15:28

we have 5 each here. We used to have 6-8 and ds (15) would like 10-12 but the price has gone up so much. I like dipping them into a fried egg.

I often do, with bread, butter and salad cream.

WhichEllie · 31/10/2023 15:29

If you are genuinely asking, OP, for me it is an issue of fat content. I cannot eat the same amount of a higher fat food (such as sausage or breaded fish) as I could a more moderate fat food. And by “cannot eat” I mean I will become nauseous and vomit if I overindulge on something fatty. It’s easy enough to avoid, so I simply don’t eat the same portions if I know it might make me ill.

But that’s a lot to explain and rather TMI, so if I was talking about it I suppose I’d just say that I could eat a steak but couldn’t eat 2 sausages and leave it at that.

wildlifeobserver1 · 31/10/2023 15:29

People who say things like that are performative eaters and do my head in.

PragmaticWench · 31/10/2023 15:30

I only eat fish fingers in a sandwich so four is the right number, two in each half of the sandwich.
