Best scary films? What should we watch?

I really enjoyed The Witch, for example, are there any other films with a similar vibe? I found it very atmospheric and unsettling.

Also open to lots of other types! What scary films do you recommend?

You may like Midsommar and/or The Ritual

SirenSays · 14/10/2023 23:10

There's a short film on youtube starring Amanda Seyfried called Skin and Bone. Similar vibes to The Witch

Lonesomefetter · 14/10/2023 23:13

Talk to me was OK, kill list excellent although not really supernatural if that is what you are after. His house was good.

Sauvblanctime · 14/10/2023 23:42

Not a scary one, but the accused on Netflix is proper edge of your seat anxiety ridden

jollyhols · 14/10/2023 23:43

Ravenous is old school, weird horror. Starring Robert Carlisle. Very good.

qwerty123454 · 14/10/2023 23:48

The 1978 Halloween

Stopsnowing · 14/10/2023 23:51

The first halloween

VeniVidiWeeWee · 14/10/2023 23:51

Wicker Man. The original with Christopher Lee.

NotTerfNorCis · 15/10/2023 00:23

The Sixth Sense and The Others - similar theme, I love them both.

The Ring was nightmare fodder.

sprigatito · 15/10/2023 00:28

The original The Woman In Black, not the Radcliffe nonsense.
The Others
Insidious
The Conjuring films (apart from the daft Annabelle ones)
Don't Look Now
The Secret of Crickley Hall

All scary and unsettling without gore/sick stuff or excessive violence

saltinesandcoffeecups · 15/10/2023 00:29

The Strangers… that one freaked me right out

Watchthedoormat · 15/10/2023 00:32

The Shining is my favourite ever horror.
I also like 'In the Tall Grass' on Netflix.
The Omen is great (the original) it's the music that gives the sense of sinister.

I couldn't sleep in the same room as a TV for weeks after watching The Ring, and it put me off watching another horror movie for years.

Hereditary

Hereditary

Hereditary is unsettling as hell! I remember seeing it at the cinema and people nervously laughing as they left the theatre at the end.

I recommend the Spanish horror film REC - it’s subtitled though which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Brilliant and thoroughly creepy though.

Emmalin · 15/10/2023 00:53

Hereditary is brilliant but pretty gory.

For supernatural suspense I'd agree with The Ring. Also Dark Water (original), paranormal activity, The Closet, Pulse, The Mimic, Onibaba.

Emmalin · 15/10/2023 00:56

[REC] is gory too, I think. Great, but gory.

The Orphanage is another Spanish one, not gory, very atmospheric but intensely sad. So is Pan's Labyrinth, which is again very sad.

Devilsmommy · 15/10/2023 00:59

The devil's candy, excellent horror movie

SheerLucks · 15/10/2023 01:04

The three best horror films of all time IMO are:

The Shining

The Exorcist (1973 original). But you'll probably be freaked out for about a fortnight afterwards...

Midsommer (which had a strange almost comforting ending for me).

Mydogmybestfriend · 15/10/2023 01:18

Watching love horror

I'm a fan of grave encounters some find it stupid though

DesperateHousewife2018 · 15/10/2023 02:46

@ChuckGarabedian you have great taste! [Rec] is a brilliant film. A lot of the cast reactions are real because they didn't know things would happen when they did. I think the subtitles add to the atmosphere.

Hollywood did try an English language version 'quarantine' but it isn't the same.

Recently really enjoyed 'talk to me'. Also 'Sinister' which is a bit older but incredibly tense. Can be a bit of a difficult watch in parts.

There's also 'Us' and 'Get Out'

ConsuelaHammock · 15/10/2023 03:04

Shutter is good.
Hostel, The Saw movies, Wolf creek is one I wouldn’t watch again as it was so disturbing. Creep about a woman in the underground.

ConsuelaHammock · 15/10/2023 03:05

Martyrs

junbean · 15/10/2023 03:24

It's not a movie, but a show, on Netflix called I Came By. It's scary but also deeply unsettling. Hugh Bonneville plays the bad guy and he's absolutely evil. It was a little traumatizing to see the Earl of Grantham that way!

tpxqi · 15/10/2023 04:50

Hereditary is the most overrated horror film of all time. Avoid.

The exorcist is the OG.
