Best scary films? What should we watch?

I really enjoyed The Witch, for example, are there any other films with a similar vibe? I found it very atmospheric and unsettling.

Also open to lots of other types! What scary films do you recommend?

Creep, a film set on the London film underground. That’s probably the last horror film i watched 😱

God yes! Really bloody scary

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/10/2023 16:42

The conjuring and the conjuring 2.
Orphan is v good too

Needhelp101 · 15/10/2023 18:40

I keep returning to this thread!

Yes to Rosemary's Baby and The Descent.

Absolutely love Severance, which is one of the rare films that are comedy horror (see also Shaun of the Dead) and also features Danny Dyer giving, astonishingly, a good performance.

ValuableLimeLesson · 15/10/2023 18:49

Loads of my favourites already mentioned, but thought I'd throw in Host (2020), which is on Shudder (an Amazon Prime channel) and is SO GOOD. An online seance goes very badly wrong. It's only an hour long, but it's brilliant.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 15/10/2023 18:56

A Dark Song would probably fit the bill.

Not sure I'd class it as horror really but, it's certainly atmospheric and the tension keeps building throughout the film.

The Ritual, As Above So Below, The Blackcoat's Daughter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, and quite a few of the episodes from Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities are worth a watch too.

If you don't mind foreign language films then Baskin, The Wailing and The Sadness are good (although The Sadness is more zombie based and is very gory).

BeautifulWar · 15/10/2023 19:03

I agree with Rec. The American remake was quite good but somehow not a patch on the original Spanish version.

SquashPenguin · 15/10/2023 19:12

The Descent still scares the shit out of me and I only saw it once about 12 years ago!

JudyGemstone · 15/10/2023 20:17

The Descent is pretty much a perfect movie.

But I watched Neil Marshall’s new one this week, and it was not good :(

Needhelp101 · 15/10/2023 21:13

I have a theory that all great horror is essentially about grief, and The Descent lives up to that.

See also the new adaptation of IT, which is rather good.

declutteringonedayatatime · 15/10/2023 22:16

I found the original Rec film rather scary.. as someone previously said, it is the subtitles that add to the tension.

Glad to see some more shout outs for Exorcist 3. I first watched it aged 15 and couldn’t sleep properly for about a year.

Rewatched it a couple of years ago thinking I was probably just too young / impressionistic and expecting it to be meh, but no - it is properly scary.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 15/10/2023 22:27

Midsommer (which had a strange almost comforting ending for me).

I remember film critic, Mark Kermode described Midsommar as a part horror, part break-up movie.

RonObvious · 15/10/2023 22:40

Another vote for The Menu - it’s on my all time favourites list. As is Rosemary’s Baby, which has also been mentioned. Agree that Severance is also worth a watch.

One of the eeriest films I’ve ever watched was a Korean film called “A tale of two sisters”. I can highly recommend it!

ghostyslovesheets · 16/10/2023 08:49

I love horror - The Sadness is probably one of the few films that’s stayed with me ever since I watched it - seriously disturbing, not sure I liked it but I’ve watched it twice - very scary and dark

whatdidshedotogetahillnamedafterher · 16/10/2023 09:16

The human centipede if you can stomach it is worth a watch.

LegendsBeyond · 16/10/2023 09:28

It Follows
The Babadook
Host
Rosemary's Baby
Eden Lake

Tale of two Sisters - it's Korean and hands down one of the most terrifying films I have ever watched.

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) ⭐ 7.1 | Drama, Horror, Mystery

The Exorcist 3 is, in my humble opinion, a masterpiece. I love the original but I think 3 is my favourite. Brad Dourif is SUBLIME. And THAT jumpscare. I still can't watch it, I'm 41 years old and I cover my face, I don't usually like jumpscares, I think it's lazy horror but that one, that one is so well crafted it's just perfect. That's how you do it. It's criminally underrated and is in my opinion the only true follow up to The Exorcist.

Oh I can’t believe I forgot ‘It Follows’, brilliant film! And if you type it into Google and hit enter, you get two scrolling emojis below the search bar that mirror the plot of the film 😄

'Host' is on iPlayer!

Will watch it tonight.

Emmalin · 17/10/2023 09:47

The Omen is on iPlayer as well right now.

An oldie but a goldie.

GilChesterton13 · 17/10/2023 09:54

Lake Mungo is a bit under the radar but incredibly good.

Oh I'll watch that too then! It's a great film, haven't seen it for decades. Love Patrick Troughton as the mad priest in it!

Emmalin · 17/10/2023 21:05

Yeah he's great. "DRINK THE BLOOD OF CHROIST" "Please escort this man out".

We watched it the other night. I think it's aged well and really enjoyed it but it may just be nostalgia on my part, remembering happy days at junior school when it got shown on telly and we all went crackers about it. My teens (over 16!!) liked it.

Gregory Peck pulls things together but damn that kid is proper creepy. I googled him and he got charged with a road rage incident where he punched a couple of cyclists, a couple of years back. The court hearing was on Friday 13th 😮😮
