Best scary films? What should we watch?

I really enjoyed The Witch, for example, are there any other films with a similar vibe? I found it very atmospheric and unsettling.

Also open to lots of other types! What scary films do you recommend?

The three best horror films of all time IMO are:

The Shining

The Exorcist (1973 original). But you'll probably be freaked out for about a fortnight afterwards...

Midsommer (which had a strange almost comforting ending for me).

Absolutely agree 🤜🏻

Hereditary is the most overrated horror film of all time. Avoid.

The exorcist is the OG.

Agree re Hereditary. It was shockingly dull and criminally overrated

TattyOne · 15/10/2023 14:42

The First Power, 1990. Lou Diamond Phillips.

Snowbeast, 1977. Michael J. London.

QueenBitch666 · 15/10/2023 14:46

Original Woman in Black
The Vanishing ( Spoorloos ) original Dutch not the dreadful remake
The Ring and The Grudge, I enjoyed both original and remakes
Sinister
Insidious
Shutter ( original )
The Exorcist obviously. Groundbreaking horror
Exorcist 3 scared the 💩 out of me
Audition
Rosemarys Baby
Blair Witch Project
💀

goldierocks · 15/10/2023 14:55

The Exorcist (original)

The Omen (original)

The Shining

Poltergeist

The Menu (pretty recent, with Ralph Fiennes). It's not 'jump out of your skin' scary (some excellent plot twists), but if you don't read a detailed synopsis first then it's shocking and disturbing in the sense that you could imagine a highly strung chef becoming unhinged.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 15/10/2023 14:58

Dog Soldiers

Saucery · 15/10/2023 14:59

Apostle

Normalsizedsalad · 15/10/2023 15:01

Go East Asian. Most new horrors have left me quite meh, but East Asian ones are good.
They are just... Different.

Agree on Hereditary being dull as fuck.

Conjuring series
Sinister was good
Some King's novels were made into good ones I even enjoyed the new IT and I am usually more into old versions

FourEyesGood · 15/10/2023 15:02

I found ‘Us’ (the Jordan Peele film starring Lupita Nyong’o) genuinely terrifying - and brilliantly made.

It’s on telly tonight if you fancy never ever being able to look at scissors again without reminding yourself of the fear caused by this film (BBC2, 9pm).

Normalsizedsalad · 15/10/2023 15:03

Does Parasite count as horror🙈

Loubelle70 · 15/10/2023 15:06

Midsommar (as others mentioned). Amazing cult like wicker man film.

The love witch (70s style)

In fabric (amazing director Peter Strickland)

Just binge watched new series the fall house of usher on Netflix...brilliant.

Too many to mention really...

JudyGemstone · 15/10/2023 15:06

Some good recommendations here. I would add:

Saint Maud
Censor
The Feast
The Wailing
Noroi: the curse
Lords of Chaos
Suspiria 2018
A wounded fawn
X
Pearl

Needhelp101 · 15/10/2023 15:07

The Thing (1970s version) is really good. Creeping paranoia and body horror. You also get a young and very sexy Kurt Russell as well.

Get Out is brilliant. I'd also add The Hunt for those who like their horror with social commentary.

Obviously the Alien trilogy as well, although apart from the first, they're not straight horror.

JudyGemstone · 15/10/2023 15:08

The top 2 definitely have that unsettling vibe you’re looking for and are made by British female filmmakers which is cool

DeadButDelicious · 15/10/2023 15:17

The Exorcist (original).
The Exorcist 3.
The Blair Witch Project.
The Wicker Man.
Midsommar.
The Babadook (really stuck with me that one, so much so I've only watched it once.)
Leave.
Attachment.
Ghostwatch (the infamous 1992 bbc Halloween special staring Sarah Greene and Michael Parkinson, it's very dated now but if you look past that to the actual story it's very scary, I still can't listen to 'round and round the garden' without getting creeped out).
An American Werewolf in London.
Nosferatu.

Ha!! Ghostwatch!! That i forgotten about. I thought it was real...until really end.

Needhelp101 · 15/10/2023 15:55

Oh yes, The Babadook! Really unsettling.

The Girl With All The Gifts is great too.

Would Prevenge count as horror? That's good too.

Hereditary is unsettling as hell! I remember seeing it at the cinema and people nervously laughing as they left the theatre at the end.

I recommend the Spanish horror film REC - it’s subtitled though which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Brilliant and thoroughly creepy though.

If people don't fancy subtitles they could watch the american remake of REC which is called quarantine. Its not as good but i did still enjoy it!

Normalsizedsalad · 15/10/2023 16:17

Under the shadow (persian) was good.

GroanWoman · 15/10/2023 16:29

Oh I'm glad others love [Rec] as much as I do! Don't bother with the sequels, though.

Another unsettling shocker, with an (almost) all female cast is 'The Descent'. Pleasingly horrible.

MooseBreath · 15/10/2023 16:32

My favourite ones are:

The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Orphan
It
The Good Son

HikingforScenery · 15/10/2023 16:35

Creep, a film set on the London film underground. That’s probably the last horror film i watched 😱

HikingforScenery · 15/10/2023 16:37

I agree Get Out is brilliant

ghostyslovesheets · 15/10/2023 16:38

Dog Soldiers
Even Horizon
Rosemary's Baby
The Sadness
The Visit
Sinister
The Shining
Last Train To Busan
Midsommar
Bed Rest
Oh I could go on and on!

ghostyslovesheets · 15/10/2023 16:38

Event Horizon!
