Enjoyed watching the documentary, he was different than I expected him to be, not sure how really, but I have more respect for Victoria now as I think their lives have been about what he wanted/needed mainly
There are rumours of lots of affairs, is this true though as I find that hard to believe, he seemed so obsessed with her

If you live in Nottingham you’d see them pretty regularly because there’s a well known undertaker chain who have a fleet of them.
misses point of thread

The Beckhams live in Nottingham?

<also misses this point>

Of course it's a carefully edited piece. However, the hate campaign against him after his red card was brutal, and almost certainly messed them both up.

I was also really uncomfortable with his dad, who effectively lived out his dreams of being a pro footballer through his son. David didn't really have a choice, his dad pushed him insanely hard, and barely acknowledged his achievements, it felt bullying and abusive, and David's extreme tidiness is a sign of his obsession with perfection as a result of his dad making him feel like no matter what he did, how hard he worked, it wasn't really good enough.

Did they need to make this series? No. They are rich to a degree that they literally don't need to work again ever. They could separate, divide their fortune and live quietly away from the public eye, but they are still chasing money and public attention/validation. There's a lot of cosmetic surgery and not much depth. I don't think they are bad people, but I'm also not convinced that either of them are actually happy.

You do realise that if we don't watch the series, and don't talk about them, they stop being famous....

Claricethecat45 · 08/10/2023 08:32

Beckham senior had alot to say, and the Mum; Kept thinking VB's family would come in somewhere, but dont recall seeing them. Beckham senior dumped his wife for a new model, did he not? All the money must be a comfort as is the association with golden balls himself. It was a good watch, but very manicured, as could be expected.

MrsLighthouse · 08/10/2023 08:38

He’s definitely has and affair / affairs …but maybe like Colleen Rooney , Victoria has made a decision to stick with him for her kids, lifestyle and because she really loves him. It’s shit thing to do, but lots of marriages survive unfaithfulness. Maybe she has had her “moments” too …but discretely. I kinda hope so…

Ramalangadingdong · 08/10/2023 08:47

I bet she hasn’t. He probably wouldn’t like it.

studentlife1 · 08/10/2023 08:53

Yes Beckham Senior made for uncomfortable watching.
Think it's a clip with his mum saying that when David as an 11 yo rang from Manchester to say he was homesick, his Dad was adament they weren't going to go up and visit Sad
Definitely school of tough love

Banana1979 · 08/10/2023 08:55

Victoria had no right to drag this all back up. Rebecca Loos didn’t owe her anything. She is quietly living abroad with her children and partner, has not courted the limelight and is now getting vile and disgusting messages from all over the world. This is a fair it was years and years ago when they were both quite young and it is unfair to drag this back up now. RL has children
Victoria Beckham maybe wants to stay a bit more relevant perhaps

studentlife1 · 08/10/2023 08:57

I think David's childhood is playing out in how his own children have been reared (whole other topic Confused)

You reap what you sow…..

EMUKE · 08/10/2023 09:02

I knew one of his management team… it happened all the time with v.famous people. Back in the day with no phones or social media it was A LOT easier for them. Now not so much due to the evidence being available. They are the best media trained hence why nothing was actually confirmed/denied. Never will be. But yes he cheated various times.

LadyEloise1 · 08/10/2023 09:04

"You reap what you sow" as @ChChChCherryBomb states.
I agree.

Actions have consequences.

You choose to have an affair with a married man who has children, well ........

Whatafustercluck · 06/10/2023 12:07

She told him she was pregnant with his much wanted baby, not that she was breaking up with him, or had slept with his best friend! I don't much like the woman, but come on, it's hardly unreasonable to want to share news that you're pregnant with the most significant person in your life!

Me and DP decided that this was a great thing to tell him. He’d have gone into that match feeling on top of the world, all Mr big bollocks cos his balls are working!

Lecurie · 08/10/2023 09:15

I know her from being a member of Spice Girls and always presumed she brought a bit of money to the table as well 🤷.

It was her monetisation of what happened with him.that makes me lose sympathy for her in having this all dragged up again. If she had 'just' slept with him, I would feel very differently.

But, hang on. When you're ultra, ultra famous why do you think you can use any woman for sex and it won't make the news? Why exactly?

I find it crass beyond belief that David not only risked his wife global humiliation, and hurt, but that , allegedly, he has been happy to risk it several times since.

And let's face it, we only know rumours about other sexual escapades could be true because Loos came out about the affair they had. Otherwise people and obsessed fans would just still be saying 'untrue'

Now what Loo's did was wrong (mostly for her to be honest) but it was her right ultimately, to tell the story to the press. As I said before, (either here or the other thread) at this time women were doing well for themselves via Kiss and Tell. It was all the rage. Yet that didn't stop David from risking playing with fire. She had an affair with one of the most famous men on earth at that time and decided to not just be used and dumped and go away quietly.

They're out of order to bring it back up, as David were an innocent party in it all. They have oodles of cash and can handle the media. Loos cannot. She's living out of the UK. I think she's been probably suffering the consequences for a long time already in ways we don't know.

DysonSpheres · 08/10/2023 09:51

Ohhoho · 08/10/2023 10:56

I know it was Beckham not Beckhams but I thought it odd that Victoria’s successful fashion career was not even mentioned…
he reminded me of Chris Packham, (and I think he is great) I think he too is on the spectrum which accounts for his single minded focus, fastidiousness etc. I like them both.
DB continually refuses to stick an easy knife in. They both deserve honours if you believe in the honours system at all. He has inspired so many and given so much. And so has she. Women are so hard on women. When you consider how many knighthoods are given for just cronyism and time serving. Working class people have to walk on water. And yes he did suffer abuse from his father and has not replicated it. And well done Victoria. Both exceptional . 👏👏👏

TogetherWeLearn · 08/10/2023 11:01

DB was a sort back in the day. You can see he got his teeth fixed at the outset of his career. Fair enough. I don’t think he’s going to age well now though as once people get a taste for cosmetic procedures they start to look weirder not more youthful (eg Madonna) He looked like he had too much make up on & his eyebrows were weirdly dark.

That said, it must be even harder to physically age when what you have achieved fame for, and been celebrated for, are your looks and fitness. They have had to put up with each others vanity for years & VB said she had to style his hair after just having her first baby so he could go outside to the paps.

It’s not really a surprise that he was a shagger. A lot of footballers wanted the family man image but had settled down very young (sometimes encouraged by their clubs to do so for stability) with their first girlfriend, had become parents young but still wanted to party as many in their 20s do. There was obviously a veil of secrecy with super injunctions not uncommon, for example, Giggs managed to portray a family man image & get advertising revenue etc when he was a serial adulterer.

Rebecca Loos spoke to the papers and seemed very comfortable with the attention at the time. It is part of Victoria's life story too and she has every right to talk about it if she wants.

DysonSpheres · 08/10/2023 12:06

Do the Beckhams have a right to talk about it in a way that indirectly infers they were victims and it wasn't true that David cheated?

Because if he cheated then he brought it on himself and his family. It's not the press' fault or solely Rebecca's fault that they experienced so much scrutiny and things were stressful at that time.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 08/10/2023 14:06

He is your classic ugly duckling turned swan - he has had lots of affairs, not just Rebecca Loos. There was the alleged one with Katharine Jenkins and alleged with Alexa Chung. VB also apparently meant to be having her fun, too.

JMSA · 08/10/2023 14:53

There has been much talk on Mumsnet about VB's fashion running at a loss, and DB bailing her out.
Please excuse my ignorance Blush but how could this happen? I gather her lines are respected, prohibitively expensive and popular. And why wouldn't she give it up?

JMSA · 08/10/2023 14:58

I've just finished watching episode 2 and am really enjoying it. I never was much of a fan and I certainly don't follow football, but it's interesting viewing nonetheless.
I can't believe all the abuse he was subjected to Shock I'm Scottish so probably missed a fair bit of that.

His dad seems a bit of a nightmare. I gather his parents are no longer together. I think parents who fail at a dream they then push onto their kids can be dangerous. Look at all those crazy child beauty queen mums in the US.

cathyandclaire · 08/10/2023 15:00

I think I read that her new bag line has been a big success and so the whole business has turned the corner.

I have one VB dress ( bought second hand) and it is well cut, lovely fabric and lined. I'd buy more if I could afford it!

Well, if you're a fabulously wealthy "fashion icon", in the Daily Mail 10 articles a day, and have Anna Wintour and the fashion elite turning up to your shows, and few million loss is a price worth paying.
