Well, that was short lived, Emmer has dropped out of the race for speaker.

lljkk · 24/10/2023 21:59

Y'all know about the looming budget cap / deficit default deadline in mid November, yeah?

Part I don't understand is what is happening to any bills, can Speaker pro Temp propose them? Or is absolutely everything stalled?

Maybe USA is becoming Belgium.

I love how in all-house votes, Hakim Jeffries gets the most votes every round.... Pelosi's legacy is brill.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/10/2023 22:06

It does start to look as if the Fart may be in actual trouble, at this point.

Lizzieregina · 24/10/2023 22:16

I sincerely wish he’d just disappear!!

He has done so much damage to the country and democracy.

I don’t believe he’ll ever spend a minute in prison, but if they could leverage all this evidence to get him to agree to go away and shut up, I’d be happy!

I still wake up every morning and hope to hear that he's died in the night. Does that make me a bad person?

Lizzieregina · 24/10/2023 22:27

@Spandauer I try not to wish that, but let’s say I wouldn’t shed any tears! I also wouldn’t watch the funeral because I refuse to give him ratings!!

Spandauer · 24/10/2023 22:53

The Meadows news is encouraging!

Although it's somewhat galling that he gets immunity given ... "He doesn’t just know where all the bodies are buried—he helped carry most of them." (quote from Xwitter)

This, plus Jennifer Ellis and his old flipper Michael Cohen testifying in New York has made for a very enjoyable day!

Now that Meadows has gotten his federal immunity deal, I expect that he'll soon flip in the GA case. He originally pled not guilty, but that can be changed with the right incentives.

Ex-Chief of Staff Mark Meadows granted immunity, tells special counsel he warned Trump about 2020 claims: Sources

Ex-Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows has spoken with Jack Smith's team several times this year, and Smith granted Meadows immunity to testify under oath, sources say.

What's happening is precisely nothing. Until there's a Speaker there can't be any movement of bills in the House. The Senate can do their work as usual, but even if they pass legislation it can't be 'law' until the House votes on it. And the House can't vote on it until the Speaker brings those bills to the floor. And we have no Speaker so.........

Speaker Pro Tem could move things along IF the House votes him the ability. But no one's putting that forth as a resolution to vote on.

I suppose the rest of the world can be thankful that all the most useless US politicians are more concerned with court cases and getting one over on each other, so the Grown Ups, Biden and Blinken, can get on with doing their jobs without interference.

B&B are among many wise people currently trying their best to sort out the huge mess that has recently broken out on this side of the Atlantic. Not to mention the other huge mess that broke out a couple of years ago on this side of the Atlantic.

In another "When did you last change your mind" moment, I have gone right off the US Constitution. Turns out being written down doesn't make it better, nor protect it from malice.

Spandauer · 25/10/2023 09:56

Yes - a written constitution seemingly causing as much chaos and non-government as not having one has done to the U.K.

But then hasn't that been Bannon's plan all along?
(It will end up being MTG at this rate...)

Breaking news... @BruceAndNosh new candidate for Speaker. 😁

BruceAndNosh · 25/10/2023 10:02

Meadow's evidence given under immunity cannot be used against him in any federal trial. Explains why he was so desperate to get Georgia case bumped up to federal court...

BruceAndNosh · 25/10/2023 12:32

Fuck me, they're going to nominate Trump eventually. Despite the fact that it is against throe rules for Speaker to be under indictment.

I'd actually like to see that, as long as he loses the vote. His head would explode

I still believe in the Constitution. The problem isn't with the document, it's with politicians. Our Founding Fathers had standards of honour and a belief in their own duty to promote the 'common welfare' of the People. I just don't think they could conceive of such dishonorable people getting into positions of such importance.

It's up to 'We, the people' to bring order to this chaos through the ballot box. As Ben Franklin said "You have your republic, if you can keep it".

Lizzieregina · 25/10/2023 19:04

Yes I’ve been watching the speaker vote and this dude will not be helpful.

WTF is wrong with all these Republicans that they’re all still scared of incurring Trump’s wrath? What a bunch of spineless weasels.

DuncinToffee · 25/10/2023 19:48

It looks like he has full Republican support so he could be around awhile unfortunately. I’d like to know what threats were used to get everyone on board!

It just seems too unlikely that everyone was agreeable to this without some coercion.

Longer than he deserves to.
I suspect the GOP realise that this fiasco has not been a vote winner. Matt Gaetz will have pissed a lot of voters off. So they'll keep him as long as they can

BruceAndNosh · 25/10/2023 19:58

Trump fined $10k for another violation of gag order.

And if you don't ?

If we cannot unite and turn this country around then we don't deserve our democracy. By 'we' I'm speaking of the rational people of this country, Dems, Independents and right thinking members of the GOP. There are more of us than there are of 'them'. It's voter apathy that's allowing a radical minority to get into office. Apathy amongst Dems and Independents, and in the case of some GOP members, fear. But they need to remember that the ballot box is locked and their vote is secret.
