I wonder how many tries it will take this time.

Lordy, who knows!

You've got Jordan, a rabid Trumpinista if there ever was one and who has been endorsed by Doofus himself. And you've got Scalise, another Trumper, just not as 'vocal' about it. But he was 'endorsed' by Gaetz and that's enough to make my hackles rise.

The actual nominee is chosen by the GOP 'conference' so let's see how long it takes them to decide on Scalise vs Jordan. Or someone else, for that matter.

As far as the actual vote, the 'magic' number is 218 out of the 435, but if Reps vote 'present' or absent themselves it could be a smaller number. The GOP has 222 seats so they could easily elect based on a party line vote.

But 45 of them are 'Freedom Caucus' members. It goes without saying that they'll want the 'hardest line Trumper' they can find or demand hard line concessions before agreeing to nominate or vote the nominee. So will they 'hang the vote' by refusing to support a more moderate nominee? That's what happened with McCarthy and why it took 15 rounds.

Tune in Tuesday evening for the next episode of 'As the Stomach Turns'*, DC style.

*For our non-US friends that's a play on the title of an old US soap opera 'As the World Turns'.

Tonight I had a look at CNBC on my TV, and was delighted to find Seth Meyers interviewing Chris Hayes. I didn't know who they were before watching this programme...

Once again, the most intelligent discussions on many many aspects of the news are ones I have seen on CNN, and now CNBC.

Roussette · 08/10/2023 07:58

Thanks for the update Across

I can't abide Jordan, whenever I watched him during the Trumpy years, he made my stomach turn!
And put a bloody jacket on man, FFS!

AcrossthePond55 · 08/10/2023 18:11

Well, with the election next year and the remaining Trump Trials coming up, I have a feeling that we'll run out of space before Trump (hopefully) 'runs out of time'.

OP posts:

No! What would I do without this thread? How would I get the low-down on what's going on in US politics?

greenacrylicpaint · 11/10/2023 19:19

so, steve scalise is new proposed speaker.
any thoughts?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 11/10/2023 19:43

Better than Gym Jordan, probably. But only just, and only probably.

Scalise isn't considered a 'Trump Loyalist' like Jordan, but he is certainly a Trump Supporter. He backed him up during his White House years and he's continually sidestepped the issue of Trump's false allegations of fraud in the 2020 election. He DID vote against certifying the election results so I guess that's all we need to know.

I'm surprised to hear that Jordan is backing Scalise and is calling on all GOP Reps to vote for him to avoid another debacle like McCarthy's 15 rounds of voting.

I'm not holding out any hope that Scalise will work with the Dems to get legislation passed or be willing to compromise any hard GOP positions (gun control, abortion, equal rights). I don't think we'll gain any ground with Scalise as Speaker. But I think we would have lost ground with Jordan.

OP posts:
AcrossthePond55 · 13/10/2023 01:15

So, latest news 'flash' from CNN is that Scalise is 'bowing out' as nominee as he knows he can't get the 217 votes needed to gain the Speakership.

GOP source says "We'll have to find a new nominee who has yet to run for the speakership". (emphasis mine)

This indicates to me that they are NOT considering Jim Jordan who has previously put himself forward as a candidate.

They certainly aren't my monkeys, but unfortunately this IS America's 'circus'. Sigh.

BTW, the Dem nominee is Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leader. But he doesn't have 217 either since there are only 212 Dems in the house.

Lizzieregina · 13/10/2023 01:34

I think it’ll be difficult to find a candidate that can get the required votes because the loony toons far right won’t vote for anyone moderate (unless they promise all sorts as McCarthy did) and the moderates are finally fed up of Trump, so won’t support anyone too Trumpy.

Gym Jordan had Trumpy’s endorsement, and couldn’t even win the nomination.

I think the tide is finally turning. But not fast enough.

AcrossthePond55 · 13/10/2023 12:47

The votes needed are 217 (or 218) I've seen both. The Dems have 212 if they vote party line for Hakeem Jeffries. That means they only need 5 or 6 GOP to cross the aisle. TBH, in reality there's a snowball's chance in hell of that happening, but if I were the minority leader/whip/any Dem Rep with a good rapport I'd be lobbying the hell out of the most moderate GOP I could find. Legislation is at a standstill, a shutdown looms, and that's what I'd keep pushing. That 'we' have work to do that's not getting done so let's work together.

OP posts:
Lizzieregina · 13/10/2023 14:58

@AcrossthePond55 I agree with you! Unfortunately there’s no way any Rs will
vote for Jeffries, they’d be primaried in the next election.

If the Rs could nominate someone moderate willing to work across the aisle, I think Jeffries could whip up some D votes for them, but they’re all too partisan and scared. Maybe they should recruit Liz Cheney even though they got rid of her. She could probably get votes from both sides. She has proven she has a spine. A sorely lacking bone for most of them!

AcrossthePond55 · 13/10/2023 16:08

@Lizzieregina

I agree. Unfortunately Liz C has been turned in to a pariah in the GOP. The radical Trump faction seems to have some kind of stranglehold on the party and she's been a victim of that. I don't get what it is that makes the non-Trump GOP legislators refuse to 'mutiny'. Sometimes I wonder if Trump has some 'blackmail file' on some of the GOP. But in the end I suppose it's just that they have such a slim majority in the house that they need every vote.

Jeffries getting the Speakership is just my little pipe dream. But you gotta have your dreams right?

OP posts:
AcrossthePond55 · 13/10/2023 22:09

So looks like Jim Jordan has now gotten the nomination. Fuck. We can kiss goodbye to any type of cooperation or bipartisanship.

All we can do is pray that there's a 'blue wave' in 2024.

Trump has discovered contouring. But he can't do it very well.

At least in the UK we have a chance of booting our currently shower of useless idiots out in the relatively near future...but what will we get in their place? No-one really cares, so long as we get these incompetent money grabbers out.

Lizzieregina · 13/10/2023 22:42

Ugh @AcrossthePond55 I didn’t see that horrifying news as I’m at work.

He is a disgusting excuse for a human and I hope he can’t get the votes. I know the Ohio state athletes have been protesting so I hope they get louder.

DuncinToffee · 14/10/2023 10:24

Found you all. I am a bit behind on what is happening in the US so thanks for the thread

SequentialAnalyst · 15/10/2023 01:03

Sorry for a derail, although it is political. I am incandescent with rage.

I put the news on, and thought I would take a look at CNN. They interviewed a retired General, Wes Grant. Good, thought I, the US military (and other high-up military men from other countries) often have sensible things to say.

Well, he began sensibly enough. He explained how the Israeli forces would be preparing to attack. I even found out that the US military, when setting off on their invasion, go from the "line of departure," whereas the British military go from the "start line."

Hamas knew what they were unleashing when they implemented Phase I of their plan, to wreak havoc from within and without on Israel. They were expecting retaliation from Israel, even, you could say, provoking it.

So far, so good, and I agree with his analysis up to this point. But then we part company...

Apparently Hamas' planned Phase II is to fight the Israelis from the tunnels and other Hamas places in Gaza. Not only that, but they want the civilian population to remain, in order to protect them as human shields. Also, they are apparently manipulating the media to get the world on their side.

He seemed oblivious to the fact that Israel, in their Phase I response, have already bombed the tunnels and houses and buildings of all sorts in Gaza to smithereens. He seemed oblivious to the fact that Palestinians are ordinary people, who want nothing more than for their children to grow up happy. He seemed oblivious to the fact that Israel had cut off food, water, medicine, and other things needed to stay alive in Gaza. He seemed oblivious to the fact that Israel had told everyone to get out or else, and that the only so-called safe route out was being bombed by the Israelis. He seemed oblivious to the fact that the last thing Palestinians have on their minds at the moment is what Hamas wants them to do! All they want is to get out of there, with their lives.

Or perhaps I have got the wrong idea, because I've been manipulatedHmm

So I have come on here to rant Angry

DreamTheMoors · 15/10/2023 02:39

I used to live in Bakersfield (I hated every second of it btw). I know all the same rich people McCarthy knows.
As long as they can keep their vast ranches & real estate & beach houses & cushy tax breaks, they don’t give a rat’s ass about Kevin McCarthy.
And they REALLY don’t care who’s speaker.

DreamTheMoors · 15/10/2023 02:57

From a Jezebel article, they lifted a convo from one of Donald’s undocumented workers, a maid, who was tasked with getting the stains out of his collars. It was hard going.
This is what she claimed his makeup is:

Trump gets gagged, McCarthy gets booted. What's next in Trumpworld?

It's not blackmail he has on them - it's violence. If he tweets that someone is a traitor, his supporters will try to assassinate them. Mitt Romney pays almost $2 million a year on personal security.

SequentialAnalyst · 15/10/2023 22:18

Re my earlier rant.
Do you think ordinary Americans would agree with Gen. Grant?
Horrendous reports from Gaza on British media Sad
Well, from both sides, really Sad

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 15/10/2023 22:20

I am here to moan about Trump and MAGA.

SequentialAnalyst · 15/10/2023 23:41

@AgingDisgracefullyHere

And I have been on this thread a very long time.
In fact, it is because of this very thread that I was watching CNN in the UK in the first place, on Sky.
So I thought I would ask the most knowledgeable Americans on MN that I know for their opinions.

My rant post did begin with this apology:
Sorry for a derail, although it is political. I am incandescent with rage.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 16/10/2023 12:01

The answer to your question is that you'll find a wide range of opinions on Israel and Palestine amongst Americans. Some will agree with him and others will disagree.
