So he's trotted out the old 'I barely knew her' line. What else is new? Or maybe I should say 'watt else is knew?'.

As far as I remember he didn't know E Jean Carroll at all, according to him. Hadn't even met her. This in spite of photographs of them together.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2023 18:52

He doesn't know Anthony Pratt either now

As well as never having met Jeffrey Epstein.

I am sure his legal team will be briefing him to not make such statements under oath where perjury is a very real outcome.

Like that's going to stop him if he thinks he can get away with it. And he always thinks he can get away with it.

Although I do have to say that perhaps, just perhaps, with all his legal 'failures' there just may be a new day dawning in Trumpland and he's starting to wake up and smell the covfefe.

I'm still waiting for Melania to post somewhere "Donald Trump? Why, I hardly knew him".

Just came to post this! Saw the 'flash' and turned on the CNN live broadcast of the hearing. We're apparently only catching the last bits but the chyron says 'Implicates Giuliani in GA plea deal'.

ELLIS, crying as she speaks, is addressing the court.

"I believed that challenging the results on behalf of President Trump shoudl be pursued in a just and legal way."

She said she "relied on others" to give her evidence of election fraud.

"If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges."

Pleads guilty to one count of 'aiding and abetting false a statement' (a RICO violation) and 'soliciting an official to violate their oath'.

So apparently there are now 4 'deals'. Scott Hall, Chesebro, Ellis, and Powell.

And the Georgia case has the bonus of being the one potential conviction for which he can't pardon himself. 😊

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/10/2023 16:26

I think there is a lot of debate about whether it is actually possible for a president to pardon himself for crime, even supposing Trump were to win which is by no means a foregone conclusion. A majority of lawyers seem to come down on the "he can't actually do that" side of the argument.

Yes, indeed.

A presidential self-pardon is untested and experts are divided on its constitutionality. A legal memo written by the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel just days before Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974 argued a president could not self-pardon, but the legal opinion is not binding.

Additionally, presidential pardoning powers only extend to federal crimes, meaning Trump wouldn’t be able to pardon himself if convicted of crimes in state cases after becoming president.

Could Donald Trump serve as president if convicted? | CNN Politics

Could the former president, who remains the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, assume the Oval Office again if convicted of the alleged crimes? In short, yes.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/10/2023 17:34

Trump can't pardon ANYBODY, including himself, in the GA trial. It is a state case and a POTUS can only issue a pardon for a federal conviction. Also, in the state of GA the governor does NOT have pardon power so that's a dead end, for Trump et al too.

I think the 'can he pardon himself' thing comes down to something in the law stating that one 'cannot be their own judge'. So the technicality/unanswered question is; does one serve as a 'judge' in granting a pardon? I'd really love to sit in on a 'moot court' on this question.

Tom Emmer is the GOP nominee for speaker of the House.

DuncinToffee · 24/10/2023 18:28

Roll-call vote is over. 26 House Republicans said they would vote for someone else besides Tom Emmer for speaker on the floor.

A gigantic pool of nos.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/10/2023 18:57

If it were not likely to have such a bad effect on the lives of so many people it would be funny watching the Republicans flailing about like this.

SerendipityJane · 24/10/2023 19:17

Being brutally honest, I have no fucks to give about whether Trump could server as president from jail or not.

However I would have a lorryload of fucks to give if a UK Prime Minister thought to deal with him as it it is somehow normal.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/10/2023 19:43

Trump's statement on TruthSo-called re Emmer's nomination, bolding mine:

"I have many wonderful friends wanting to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great Warriors. RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them. He never respected the Power of a Trump Endorsement, or the breadth and scope of MAGA—MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
"He fought me all the way, and actually spent more time defending Ilhan Omar, than he did me—He is totally out-of-touch with Republican Voters, I believe he has now learned his lesson because he is saying that he is Pro-Trump all the way, but who can ever be sure? Has he only changed because that's what it takes to win? The Republican Party cannot take that chance, because that's not where the America First Voters are. Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!"

He's just gotta get his 'I don't know him' disclaimer in there with everyone, doesn't he? Just in case.

Trump is so desperate to be relevant

BruceAndNosh · 24/10/2023 20:42

This is such a shambles.
Jordan was "too conservative" for the moderates, and Emmer is "too Moderate" for the conservatives.
