Blast. Sorry, then. But we can hope; the reason given seemed so cogent....

SerendipityJane · 19/10/2023 19:20

Incidentally (one for the pedants) isn't "coconspirator" a tautology ? Surely "Conspirator" will do just fine.

Lizzieregina · 19/10/2023 19:25

It’s true that Jordan has backed out and now they’re talking about making McHenry speaker pro tem, which means he can call the house to order for votes etc but he doesn’t actually have any power. This would mean the house could move forward with business but they won’t actually have a leader (I think).

Georgia streams court appearances, so I watched Powells hearing. Very mundane except when she was hesitant to state her age, and when she asked her counsel to object to terms in plea deal which precluded her from owning a firearm.

She'll need one.

So, apparently there was just a meeting between Jordan and the GOP Reps who have not voted for him. I watched the news report w/Jake Tapper and Jake said that Jordan 'stalked' out when the meeting was over, apparently a very unhappy camper. The video of Jordan was from the rear and he certainly 'strode' away not stopping to speak to anyone and I assume if there'd been a 'positive outcome' he'd have made some sort of statement.

Jake added that the GOP Reps exited the room with stern faces and a few of them said off camera they had no intention of changing their votes.

Oh, forgot to mention. Alyssa Farah Griffin (The View) said that it is a 'plan' that Jordan should lose more and more votes in each round of voting. I didn't catch the basis or source for her statement, but it sounded as if was something she had actually heard as opposed to something she simply thinks may be a 'strategy'.

Interesting if true.

Good grief!

Why can’t they just find someone reasonably palatable to both sides!! Rhetorical question as I know the answer! They don’t want to be beholden to the democrats and actually have to compromise on anything!

SequentialAnalyst · 19/10/2023 23:28

They have lost touch with reality. It's just a sort of power game to them.
Meanwhile, Biden seems to me to still be doing about as much as a US President can do about what is going on in Real Life.

Probably because the 2 factions within the GOP are so diametrically opposed to each other than they simply can't find a candidate that is even remotely palatable to both sides. And neither side is willing to compromise on what the other side wants as a compromise. Considering that the radical side wants to legislatively rip the Constitution to shreds, I can see why the more moderate side doesn't want to compromise with them.

I agree. It's all about preservation of power and nothing about actual governance. I think the GOP has backed itself into a corner and I can't really see a way out other than a total capitulation of one side to the other. I don't see that happening with either side for fear of being 'primaried'.

I think Joe is doing a great job. He's making slow moves in the Middle East rather than trying to 'solve' the entire issue in one fell swoop. I think his philosophy is "Slow and steady wins the race". Although I expect he knows that the race really isn't completely winnable.

And although he seems to be sort of quiet about the debacle that is the House Speakership, I'm sure he's doing a lot more behind the scenes than we realize. Not that he has any sway with the radical members, but I'm sure he has cordial relationships with the more moderate members and is probably encouraging them to stick to their guns when it comes to Jordan. And encouraging them to 'reach across the aisle' to consider voting for Jeffries as a way to get things moving again in the House.

Sydney Powell has pled guilty in Georgia, and will be testifying for the prosecution.

Roussette · 20/10/2023 07:25

Nothing surprises me about Sydney Powell... she came across as completely loopy whilst all this voting machine debacle was going on.

As for Jordan, delighted to hear he is toast

A loose parallel would be the Tories and Brexit.

Powell has pled guilty in Georgia where there is no Trump gag order, but she is also an unindicted Co conspirator in Federal /Chutkan DC case where Trump is gagged from discussing possible witnesses. I'm pretty sure Trump's lawyers have put their own gag order on him as there is no mention of La Kraken on Truth Social, and they should tell him to No Comment to any press questions about her.

I'm ambivalent about her plea deal, it's good that Prosecution has an insider willing to testify. But I feel she has got off far too lightly. The plea deal might be reasonable in light of the relevant charges but I feel she did untold damage in promoting the Big Lie which of course she has not faced any charges for.
She was still insisiting the election was stolen less than 2 weeks ago

I get the ambivalence. But I guess we have to look at her 'deal' as letting go of the small fry in order to catch the 'whale'. IMHO, she must have some pretty damaging intel for them to let her off so easily. I'm sure any credit she may have had outside of Trumpworld has been blown to smithereens. What law firm would touch her now? And Doofus isn't going to lift a finger to repair any damage within Trumpworld. We know that when he's done with you, you go on the garbage heap.

Interesting point you raise on the media. I haven't really seen hide nor hair of Doofus on any reputable network. Whether it's because his legal team has finally gotten through to him to shut his fat gob or because the MSM simply doesn't consider him personally 'newsworthy' right now, who knows?

Jim Jordan fails to become Speaker on the third ballot. More farcical scenes in Washington.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/10/2023 17:31

I have been told (by someone who was laughing rather a lot) that he had a meeting with the 22 who voted against him last time, came out of it with a face like thunder and stomped off refusing to talk to the press at all. Which makes me wonder why on earth he went for the third ballot, when he must have known he would no more win it than he had the previous two.

AcrossthePond55 · 20/10/2023 17:33

Kenneth Chesebro take plea deal in GA election subversion case. Watching hearing live now on CNN. Agrees to give up (amongst others) his 5th amendment rights. He has pled guilty in 'false elector' scheme.

That's another co-conspirator who will be testifying against Doofus.

Today's count was 25 GOP 'against' Jordan. Up from 22 yesterday.

Looks like Alyssa Farah Griffin's remarks that this is a 'plan' by moderates may be on the money. No idea what it's supposed to prove to Jordan by showing increasing 'lack of support' though 🤷🏼‍♀️
