Born on November 20th 1942 Biden is 3 months short of being 10 years older than me.
Like me, he has lived through many decades, and has had decades to think about what he has lived through. He realises that all most people want is for their children to grow up safe and happy, that the world is a complex place, that wars kill people, and can only be ended if people talk to each other about how to end them. And I expect he is as cynical, and hopeful, about human nature as I am. (Obvs just my take on him.)
He was 20 when the Beatles released their first single, Please Please Me, in the UK on 22nd March 1963. Over here, the whole population of the UK, it seemed to 10 year-old me, were instantly mesmerised, and the record shot up the record charts and got to No.1 in the UK. It got to No.155 in the US. (Check out the lyrics. They are actually quite frank about "necking" as I think you Americans call it
But nobody noticed, and John got away with it
)
Times were hopeful, and JFK was President of the US. You know what happened next, and over the following decades...
The recent World War still cast a long shadow. Britain had declared war on Germany in September 1939. Biden had just had his first birthday when the US entered the War on December 11th 1941.
Here's a British article by an academic who studies this period
