I think it's criminal damagers that can't be paid by fundraising - although if it's not in the Constitution, that's another bunfight to have.

Hence he has to pay E Jean Caroll out of his own pocket, because it's damages awarded against him. I haven't hear anything either way, regarding the payment of a fine.

Thanks @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

I thought it was illegal for fines to be paid by political donations? Or doesn't the GFM fall under that description?

I don't think GoFundMe is being political in this; it's specifically to pay his fine, not for political purposes. So it is likely to be OK. It's the loopiness of people on a $15 per hour wage paying money out of their pittances to help someone who claims to be worth $billions that rather freaks me out.

If Trump gets his way, the entire RNC will become his personal piggy bank, as he redefines it's raison d'etre to "getting Trump elected".

However, much like the genius of relying on non-voters that eventually doomed UKIP, Trumps building a base of the less affluent may now hinder his grifting.

Friend of the thread, Beau, made the point that these numbers are simply unimaginable. If the average MAGA voter (that can count) thinks they can raise at least $350,000,000 with a whip round, there could be some disappointment.

SerendipityJane · 17/02/2024 18:13

I think he is - as they said in "Snatch" - "Proper fucked".

SerendipityJane · 17/02/2024 19:12

I wonder how long this humiliation will be allowed to stand. What's this - about $4,000 an hour (being generous, which is more than his supporters are being).

At this rate, he will reach his target in about 13 years ?

What happens if Trump is forced to use 'donations' to pay the fines? I'm guessing he has a lot less cash than he claims.

There was something about that on MSNBC yesterday. I didn't catch the whole thing, but it sounds like as long as it's clear what the donation is for and as long as it doesn't come out of campaign donations, if people want to be idiots, that's up to them! But I have a feeling that the 'net worth' of his cult wouldn't add up to a drop in the bucket of $400M.

The commentators also said that they don't believe he has that much in 'liquid funds' so if the fine stands, he'll have to sell off property and businesses to pay it.

GoFundMe does not allow campaigns for "the legal defense of alleged financial and violent crimes."

Since President Trump is accused of financial crimes, this campaign is in violation of GoFundMe's terms of service and any funds collected will not reach him.

Bravo GoFundMe!!

SinnerBoy · 18/02/2024 00:11

Apart from GonFunundMe's terms of service, don't they have to be honest? "Unjust Judgement"?

Roussette · 18/02/2024 07:52

Along with Trump perfume and cologne...I wonder what it smells of....

I guess Putin will have to stump up then.

TRIGGER WARNING: photograph of the Young Donald ahoy

Fascinating article in the Guardian (for once) yesterday about Fred Trump, Donald Trump and the Trump Organization. It's by Sidney Blumenthal, a Guardian US columnist, former senior adviser to President Bill & Hillary Clinton and political writer. Looks like no more casino chip buying for Donald to bail him out of his latest messes. (He's going into the gold high-top shoe business instead, according to today's Observer.)

Trump’s hubris has brought about the downfall of his family’s business empire | Sidney Blumenthal

Even the fortune Trump inherited from his father did not stop him from steering the family’s dynasty on to the rocks

Trump sneakers, that is hillarious.

Snake oil next?

SerendipityJane · 18/02/2024 12:12

It's amusing that by donating $5 to the gofundme, people get a chance to add their own thoughts about Trump. And they are not all as positive as he may have hoped ....

There are some donors, however, who seem to be giving minuscule amounts to make a statement.
For example, one person who gave $5, wrote, “I paid $5 for the privilege of saying that Donald Trump is a conman, a serial sexual abuser and an insurrectionist scumbag. All of you who seriously contribute money to this man are brainwashed cult members. Trump is a danger to democracy and this country.”

$5 seems a bargain to be able to write that on Trump's gofundme page. Lovin' it!

To remind myself I wasn't hallucinating about it. (I think the Guardian is claiming this article btw although it's dated today which is Observer publication day, hence my muddlement.)

The internet is a funny place, where merely thinking out loud can sometimes result in reality - like the idea that Alina Habba is a deep Democrat plant. It's almost like magic.

I wonder when - or if - any of the MAGA geniuses will twig that the "Donald Trump" that has been fined is really a Democrat plant designed to suck money from them and deny the REAL DONALD TRUMP victory when he emerges to denounce the imposter ?

(Places post on hands and gently blows into the universe ....)

SerendipityJane · 18/02/2024 12:23

Donald Trump sneakers ?

Presumably aimed at "British seniors" ?
