Yes, this.

Sorry, @Darkandstormynite , didn't mean to be cryptic.

Oh dear god, someone actually fucking did the one thing I told them not to.

The only saving grace (sadly not the excellent folk rock ensemble from ol' Percy) about thick conspiracy theorists, is eventually they form a circular firing squad as they try to outdo each other in their shows of devotion to the graven image. Even as I type some congressman has upped the ante by suggesting slaughtering immigrants .

The descent of the French Revolution into the terror, and the ultimate irony of Robespierre's downfall being the paradigm.

Closer to home, I suspect a similar sentiment is growing amongst the more loopy tories. As a certain Mr. Rotten once said: "Ever get the feeling you've been had ?". Because they have been. Big time.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/02/2024 18:46

Our political 'norms' around how a politician should 'behave' and what we should and should not 'tolerate' have been put in a blender and 'someone' has hit high speed. Even Nixon didn't fuck up 'the common wisdom' with Watergate the way Trump has with all his crimes and (as Dub-ya would have put it) 'evil-doing'.

Problem is, TPTB seem to want to still play by the old rulebook. The GOP because they want to be able to get away with the same shit when they're 'back in power' so they don't want to cut off their noses. The Dems because, well, they're basically decent people who don't want to play as dirty as the GOP/Trump does. Something has GOT to give somewhere.

To misquote Louis XV; "Après Trump, le déluge"

To misquote Louis XV; "Après Trump, le déluge"

Wasn't it Louis XIV ? Le roi du soleil ?

"L'etat c'est moi."

No, it was Louis XV (great-grandson of Louis XIV) who said "Après moi, le déluge". It's been interpreted to mean everything from the return of Halley's comet to a belief that the country would go to hell in a hand basket after his death.

Well, one thing is certain, Louis XV wasn’t wrong about that, as the French Revolution brought to an end the reign of Louis XVI!

We can only hope that the phrase ‘’Après Trump le Deluge’ doesn’t turn out to also be true. But these are very worrying times, especially when we remember what happened on 6th January 2021.

Imagine all you had was money. Or rather the illusion of money.

And you wanted to short circuit the tedious traditional route to power, and not put the effort in.

You would eventually hit upon a strategy where your the publicity your wealth affords can be used to lay the ground for a popular narrative that whatever the actual outcome of an election, you won.

You would then continue to use that publicity to make the masses engage in an insurrection and attain your goals.

It's been a long time since I read Machiavelli, but I have a sneaking memory there is nothing new under the sun.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/02/2024 14:41

@SerendipityJane

You've got that right. Trump plays directly from Machiavelli's playbook.

Definition of Machiavellian theory:

Machiavellianism is associated with the doctrine of moral expediency and deviousness in political actions; the divorce of politics from private morality; and the justification of all political means, even the most unscrupulous when the interests of the state are at stake.

Of course Machiavelli was writing in an age of city states (harking back to Greece and Rome) and his was advice any ruler who wanted to stay alive would need.

Looks like he's already caved in. Although can't see any news sources to verify this at moment.

McConnell is responsible for the orange monster that the Republicans have created. I do not wish him well.

AcrossthePond55 · 06/02/2024 13:51

Who's surprised at this? Not me. Yertle the Turtle has been kissing Trump's ass since Day 1. He may have tried to 'assert his independence' but like a whipped dog, he came crawling back.

It'll go to the Supreme Court but one step at a time Wink

Donald Trump does not have presidential immunity, US court rules https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-68026175

Even though the Supreme Court is currently conservative with Trump appointees, they may surprise him because I believe that as well as being conservatives, they are also (or perhaps "because they are conservatives" Wink), they are also strict constitutionalists.

AcrossthePond55 · 06/02/2024 15:33

Trump wants any/all trials delayed until after the election so the word 'convicted' can't be used against him in ads.

I get that everything is going to end up before SCOTUS, but it's just so frustrating!

Unanimous verdict. All three judges agreed to no immunity

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/02/2024 17:18

That makes it entirely possible for the Supreme Court simply to decline to hear the case, doesn't it? That would be interesting. After all, they would probably rather not be seen adjudicating on this can of worms or having obvious political bias.

BruceAndNosh · 06/02/2024 17:26

The 3 judge ruling gives Trump deadline of one week to file appeal to Supreme Court, otherwise ruling stands. This prevents him from delaying matters further by requesting an interim En Banc appeal .

He'll make the deadline and it looks like SCOTUS is delaying as long as it can in making decisions on any of the cases.

If we are really lucky, his incompetent lawyering team will miss the deadline. You know, like the way they forgot to ask for a jury in one of the cases....

SerendipityJane · 06/02/2024 19:20

Not necessarily. They can choose to decline to hear the case - essentially signalling they agree with the lower courts judgement.
