@SerendipityJane Here in the NE of Enland some very useful development posts were created, and most posts were filled with hard-working well educated people. He also introduced the Private Finance Initiative, which enabled the building of new infrastructure like hospitals. There was no money to invest up front, but at least it could be borrowed, and everyone just had to cross their fingers and hope it would turn out alright (which, of course, it didn't, but at least the buildings were still in use) Eventually the money for the new posts ran out. It always does. But things were left a little bit better, and the work done then has been built on, as best could be done in the circumstances.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/10/2023 22:42

Pence has dropped out of the race for president.

In response, one Jeff Timmer (former Michigan Republican Party executive director) said of him that "There is plenty of market for his dangerous bastardized strain of Christianity, but no GOP consumers were interested in his personal brand of 'not brave enough to violate the Constitution.'"

Heaven defend us all if it is now a sign of courage for a Republican politician to violate the constitution. Not doing so is no longer "not being being a lawless rascal"; it is being "not brave enough".

Gah.

I feel a little sorry for Pence. A man trapped by an unprecedented situation, with the supporters of the man he served as VP calling for him to be strung up for doing his duty. I hope he can put his feet up for a bit. The time for him to be in politics has gone, and what's more, he realises it.

What ?! A man who would happily take away your own right over your own body because of some imagined legitimacy from a fairy story ?

Fuck him.

And if he is finding his life constrained because of what other people judge him for, then it's richly ironic.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 29/10/2023 11:38

I don't feel terribly sorry for him because he was all in on MAGA right up until Dan Quayle convinced him that he just couldn't get away with what Trump asked of him.

Plenty of sane Republicans tried to work with Trump, hoping that he'd mellow out or listen to reason, but they soon found that they either had to go along with the madness or quit (at which point they would be denounced by Trump and put in real physical danger.)

Pence waited until JANUARY to reach that point. He's like Bill Barr, who was happy to be Trump's personal fixer at the DOJ, until he finally couldn't go along with the stolen election lie. Now, Barr says sensible things and I believe him when he goes on TV and says that Trump is "toast." He's not a stupid man and he knows what he's talking about. But he's morally bankrupt and I don't respect him.

Lizzieregina · 29/10/2023 13:44

Good grief, there’s isn’t a part of me that could feel an ounce of sympathy for Pence. He signed on as VP because like many of us, he thought Trump would crash and burn within months and he’d be President by default. He’s a spineless weasel who managed to do one decent thing (probably because he knew he wouldn’t get away with not certifying the election). Good riddance!

AcrossthePond55 · 29/10/2023 13:50

I think Pence isn't 'evil', just misguided. I think he's sincere in his religious beliefs and thought he could 'steer' Trump into promoting Pence's version of 'Christian Citizenship' or that he could use Trump to push his own Evangelical agenda on the US. And we all know how that ended up!!

Time for him to walk away from American politics. But I have a feeling that we've not seen the last of him. 'Presidentially speaking', I think he's done and knows it. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him run for the Senate in the next midterms (2026).

Dates set by Judge Engoron for their testimony in the civil fraud trial. 👀

November 1 — Don Jr.
November 2 — Eric Trump
November 3 — Ivanka Trump
November 6 — Donald Trump

Doofus hardly knows most of them...

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 29/10/2023 18:33

That's gonna be a fun week on msnbc!

AcrossthePond55 · 29/10/2023 18:41

I just wish this would be televised!!! I'll be madly refreshing the 'live updates' article 'streams' on CNN & MSNBC.

And I wish that Rachel Maddow had her M-F show! I know she had good reasons to back away from the 5 night gig, but things are ramping up and we NEED her take on the day!!

OP posts:
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/10/2023 18:43

I agree, her take each day would be of great interest.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 29/10/2023 18:46

I agree! I relied upon her to get me through the Trump presidency.

Chris Haye is pretty good.

Judge Chutkan has reinstated gag order on Trump which was briefly stayed

Violation incoming in 3,2,1...

AcrossthePond55 · 30/10/2023 12:36

She is good! I've always found her to be very balanced, even back in the 'early days' when she was a vocal Republican. She used to be a speech writer & Comms Director for Dub-ya. Also worked on the 2008 McCain campaign.

In 2021 she described herself as a 'former' GOP. Don't know if she 'officially' changed parties, though.

More court room challenges this week for Doofus. But would these ignite Jan 6th-type insurrections in the 2 states if they succeeded in getting him off the ballot?

Dozens of cases citing the amendment have been filed in recent months, but the ones in Colorado and Minnesota seem the most important, according to legal experts. They were filed by two liberal groups with significant resources, and in states with a clear, swift process for challenges to candidates’ ballot qualifications.

That means the Colorado and Minnesota cases are taking a more legally sound route to get courts to force election officials to disqualify Trump, in contrast to other lawsuits that seek a sweeping ruling from federal judges that Trump is no longer eligible for the presidency.

Efforts to keep ‘insurrectionist’ Trump off 2024 ballot to be heard in court

I'm able to listen to her before I go to sleep as the podcast goes up at midnight and she is pretty good.

There's a lot of ex Republicans on msnbc. Joe Scarborough was a Republican member of Congress. People think Chris Christie's campaign is an audition for a job with them lol.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 30/10/2023 19:19

Sarah Palin was peak Tea Party. So that's when she got fed up.

You have to put up with some outliers you don't fully agree with in any party.

A character I find fascinating is Joe Walsh, who was a main player in the Tea Party. He used to say racist/Islamaphobic things about Obama, but since Trump he's left the GOP and has apologised for the things he said about Obama.

SequentialAnalyst · 30/10/2023 19:46

@AgingDisgracefullyHere the podcast goes up at midnight and she is pretty good.

What timezone would that be? And come to think of it, where are you all, roughly? I know about Across...

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 30/10/2023 22:08

I'm in England.

I think it's midnight, at least.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 30/10/2023 23:28

That's what I like about Joe Walsh. He knows he was part of the problem.

"Oh, I leave all that kind of thing to my accountants"

Just no. And even Accounting 101 should tell you how to read a balance sheet. If you are involved in business, even as a hands-off investor, it's definitely a good idea to be able to read one. It tells you what you've got, what it's worth, and who you owe money to. And you can use the info in it when you inform the IRS, or ForbesWink, what your assets are worth.

The question is, who decides how much your assets are worth, how did they arrive at that valuation, and which head honcho in the business signed off the valuation? This is the crux of the case...Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 01/11/2023 20:32

I think Accounting 101 also covered "You sign the form, you damned well better know what the hell you're signing!!!".

In my former job there was a woman who was faced with losing her home because she 'just signed the returns' that her husband prepared. The IRS told her it was her responsibility to know what she signed.

In other legal woes, apparently Judge Cannon is 'considering' postponing the Mar A Lago documents trial as " the defense team wouldn't be able to complete trial preparations between now and the spring". Trump's team has repeatedly asked it be postponed until after Nov 2024.

Everyone who's NOT surprised raise your hand. 🙋‍♀️ 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️

Cannon delaying the Mar a Lago docs trial frees up a handy space for judge Chutkan to slot in HER case, so it's actually good thing!
