Dunnet head the most northerly point in mainland Britain but also been to Orkney.
I live in Scotland so everywhere in England is referred to as down south but I guess when I think of the North I think of Newcastle.

ChaToilLeam · 21/09/2023 07:41

Dunnet Head (Caithness), which I believe is the most northerly point on the mainland.

Have been to Orkney too but not Shetland.

I think the North starts at Inverness, but I grew up in the North Highlands. Everything is South to me.

SirWalterElliot · 21/09/2023 07:41

Derry.

I'd say Yorkshire and Lancashire are North, below that is Midlands.

hannahwaddinghamsbiceps · 21/09/2023 07:42

I live in the midlands. Was amused a few years ago during a road trip in Scotland that all signs said 'to the north' until you reach the northern most coast. Then when you head away from the coast, all the signs say 'south'!
To me northern England is Sheffield or Manchester and upwards.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 21/09/2023 07:43

I like this one. It makes sense.

KvotheTheBloodless · 21/09/2023 07:43

Inverness.

North starts above Sheffield I think, as technically South Yorks is in the East Midlands.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/09/2023 07:14

Fort George, which is just past Inverness.

North of England start point... M62 maybe? Or perhaps the A66 is better.

Putting York, Hull and Manchester out of the north?

AgnesX · 21/09/2023 07:44

The north starts at Preston, everything else is the north west. Yorkshire is the north on the east coast.

I've never been further north than John O Groats... really need to see the Northern Isles.

user1471517095 · 21/09/2023 07:45

Shetland and the North starts at Sheffield.

RidingMyBike · 21/09/2023 07:45

Thurso (so about 20 miles from John O Groats - would have liked to have gone there but wasn't convinced the bus would get us back in time for the train!)

Northern England starts from about Humber/Sheffield line upwards

Cyllie33 · 21/09/2023 07:45

The furthest north I’ve been in the UK is Inverness and the north of England starts in South Yorkshire/Cheshire - I grew up near Birmingham and think the differences of opinion are basically because so many people refuse to recognise the Midlands!

Chiaseedling · 21/09/2023 07:46

Glasgow

I’d say the North starts past the midlands so just before Sheffield really.

cuddlebear · 21/09/2023 07:46

Furthest north I have been is Peterhead. North starts in Camden 😂

Whysoootired · 21/09/2023 07:46

Glasgow but really, really want to explore Scotland more!

Hmm I think the north starts at Sheffield?

lalaloopyhead · 21/09/2023 07:47

Shetland.

I think fo the North starting in Sheffield, so South Yorkshire. I think anything below that is the Midlands, which is where I live.

BeMoreBarbie · 21/09/2023 07:47

Depends on if your cutting it to north and south or including the midlands. I'm from the midlands and moved to a lower part of the midlands where they consider themselves southerners and I'm constantly having to remind them I'm not northern, I'm from the midlands. To which their response is "north of the Watford gap" Angry

The north starts where derby / notts becomes Sheffield and glossop etc for me. That may not be an exact science as geography isn't my strong suit.

BiddyPop · 21/09/2023 07:48

Newcastle, Durham and Edinburgh.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/09/2023 07:49

Zonder · 21/09/2023 07:44

Putting York, Hull and Manchester out of the north?

The problem is I've lived in both North and South Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire feels a lot more Southern. And then there's the sheer vastness between A66 and the Scottish border, which I've driven many times...

MinnieMouse0 · 21/09/2023 07:49

I’m from the highlands so I say the north starts at Perth 😂

Furthest north I’ve been is Orkney.

gogomoto · 21/09/2023 07:49

Have taken a photo of the most northerly house in the U.K., it's on Unst, also been in the most northerly church. The Shetland Islands are lovely.

Processingprocesses · 21/09/2023 07:50

I had never heard of the Watford Gap until this thread 😅

Morewineplease10 · 21/09/2023 07:50

St Andrews.

North to me starts from Derby too, definitely not Watford Gap!

gogomoto · 21/09/2023 07:50

The north in my mind starts north of Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire etc which are midlands so from Merseyside across

BBno4 · 21/09/2023 07:51

Furthest I've been is Coventry, anywhere north of London is north to me.

Processingprocesses · 21/09/2023 07:52

Ah so Googled Watford Gap. Its technically a topographical cleft. So it's basically the arse crack of England.
