Furthest North for me is Inverness, North starts circa the peak district. I consider Nottingham Midlands and Sheffield the North even though they are close to each ither.

AdaColeman · 21/09/2023 07:53

Fort William is the furthest north I've been in the U.K.

Geographically, I think of The North as starting at Hadrian's Wall, but emotionally when on a journey, Scotch Corner marks the start of The North.

Ethelswith · 21/09/2023 07:54

Furthest north I've been is Inverness.

North just about starts with Yorkshire, but properly starts with North Yorkshire

Spikeyball · 21/09/2023 07:55

Fort George. The most southerly northern city is Sheffield. Derbyshire/Notts/ Staffs are the Midlands.

cakeorwine · 21/09/2023 07:57

Been up to Tobermory.

When we drive up the A1, the North (of England) starts when we cross the Trent. That's my view.

Not sure where it would be if we came down the M6.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/09/2023 07:49

The problem is I've lived in both North and South Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire feels a lot more Southern. And then there's the sheer vastness between A66 and the Scottish border, which I've driven many times...

Really? I've lived in North and South too, including Sheffield which feels northern to me.

CrazyHamsterLady · 21/09/2023 07:58

John O’Groats. We’ve even got the picture by the sign to prove it! I’d say it starts once you get to Scotland.

ButterflyBitch · 21/09/2023 07:58

Been to York/Leeds. Blackpool when I was a kid. The north starts when the road signs start saying The North in what I always perceive as a dramatic manner. I don’t know why.

Panda89 · 21/09/2023 07:59

Furthest north I’ve been is Edinburgh.

To me ‘up north’ is anything level with Birmingham and above, definitely Derby/Nottingham etc as they have such a northern accent!

Libraryloiterer · 21/09/2023 07:59

The North has a (loosely) shared cultural and linguistic identity, it's not a place that's just relative to where someone in Newquay lives.

Georgethebear · 21/09/2023 07:59

I live in Northumberland and work in Cumbria so to me the North starts at about Leeds.

Cherrylily7 · 21/09/2023 08:00

Winchester
I live as far south as you can get without swimming

lapsedbookworm · 21/09/2023 08:03

Honeyroar · 21/09/2023 07:23

I’d say North of England starts just below Sheffield/Rotherham on the East, and around the Cheshire area on the West side

Same.

I live on South coast now but have also lived as far north as Newcastle and lived in the midlands

Furthest north I have been in UK is Aberdeen

The furthest north I've been is to Shetland (Lerwick and Sumburgh), that's quite farth north I'd say. I'm Scottish and have been to a lot of places in the north of Scotland/Orkney. The furthest south I've been is London (lived nearby for a while).

IncompleteSenten · 21/09/2023 08:04

Furthest north I've been is dunnet head.
I live on the Yorkshire Derbyshire border and consider myself a northerner although apparently where I live comes under East Midlands

DynamicK · 21/09/2023 08:04

Chanonry point which is slightly further north of Inverness. We went to see the dolphins that come into the bay and weren't disappointed!

I live in London and the north starts after Birmingham for me.

Justleaveitblankthen · 21/09/2023 08:04

The north starts in Yorkshire? 😂
What are we in Lancashire then?

I drive up and down the motorway every day. It definitely starts in Staffordshire. Derbyshire at a tight push.
All the signs direct to 'North West'.

Furthest north I have been is Edinburgh.

Petaldust · 21/09/2023 08:04

Furthest north UK I’ve been is Glasgow.
When I used to travel to Durham from London I felt like I’d hit the north around Doncaster (not yet at Peterborough).

Thisbastardcomputer · 21/09/2023 08:04

Aviemore.

I'd say it starts in Newcastle area

AIstolemylunch · 21/09/2023 08:07

Manchester is definitely North <gavel>

Have we reached concensus on the North (of England) starting at (or past?) Sheffield?

Backagain23 · 21/09/2023 08:08

It's interesting how many people are answering from two perspectives in single posts.

  1. Furthest north in the UK.
  2. Where "north" starts in England.

Otherwise where is the logic in answering

  1. Inverness
  2. Birmingham

So much north and very little south.

ohtowinthelottery · 21/09/2023 08:08

Durness.

Litmus1001 · 21/09/2023 08:09

napody · 21/09/2023 07:17

Derby and up. When people talk about 'the north' they mean north of england- obviously Scotland a different country not just part of 'the north'.

OP said UK, AFAIK Scotland is still part of the UK.

Lockthedoorbehindyou · 21/09/2023 08:11

Dunnet Head, so the most northerly place on mainland UK.

North to me is north of Merseyside and the Humber.

AIstolemylunch · 21/09/2023 08:12

Well, then England is South and Scotland is North then 😄

'The North' in England refers to Northern England though. Is there a similar concept in Scotland? Or do you say 'The Highlands and Islands' maybe?
