Outside the M25, Potters Bar / St. Albans / Luton. I remember that when I moved here I couldn't get over that sign "The North" - I was wondering if it's a place like a town or the actual north.

IncompleteSenten · 21/09/2023 08:12

The question was the UK so obviously people are going to reply with the UK as a whole in mind.

Badbadbunny · 21/09/2023 08:12

The geographic centre of the UK is Lancashire, so, "The North" of the UK is anywhere north of that, so, say Manchester/Leeds being the nearest cities, or Lancashire/Yorkshire counties.

Wondering17 · 21/09/2023 08:12

Edinburgh

The North starts at Sheffield IMO.

Picturethat · 21/09/2023 08:13

Shetland. The north is Scotland, anything south of the border is 'down south' to us.

Apart from the post saying that Scotland is a separate country. 🤦‍♀️

We live in Cheshire. South of us is Midlands. We see ourselves as the very south of the north.

I grew up in the Midlands and similar for me.

I've always thought Watford Gap (which is not Watford) as the place where you leave the south at least.

Inverness

ntmdino · 21/09/2023 08:21

Live in Lincolnshire (the southern tip), Glasgow's the furthest north I've been, and "north" starts at Yorkshire/Lancashire as far as I'm concerned.

allthehops · 21/09/2023 08:24

I've been to Kirkwall (Orkney isles) I tend to think of the North as anywhere from Cheshire upwards.

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 21/09/2023 08:25

Furthest north in the UK - Glasgow
Furthest north in England - North Shields
I think 'the north' of England starts roundabout Derbyshire.
I live in the north (Yorkshire).

babybythesea · 21/09/2023 08:31

Edinburgh.

The north used to start in Nottingham- we came from London but had family there so that was my line growing up. Now I live in Cornwall- the north starts around Bristol!!

moggiek · 21/09/2023 08:36

Unst

Havanananana · 21/09/2023 08:37

In a similar vein, European geography is confusing to many in the UK.

Which city is furthest south - the capital of Denmark or the capital of Scotland?

Shetland. The north is Scotland, anything south of the border is 'down south' to us.

That depends on your perspective. Being from Shetland 'down south' is anywhere on the UK mainland 😉

I've been further north than the northernmost landmass, which is Outsta (or 'out stack'), on my uncle's boat.

In a Scottish sense, I think of Aberdeen/Inverness and up as north. In a UK sense, I guess from Tyneside and up.

But my perspective will be very different than that of someone from, say, Devon.

AwaaFaeHom · 21/09/2023 08:44

'Ousta' not 'Outsta' - autocorrect thought I wanted to say outstanding and I didn't fully correct the autocorrect dammit!

unsync · 21/09/2023 08:45

Watford Gap. Dundee.

I'd be interested though where people think the South starts and how far south they have been.

caringcarer · 21/09/2023 08:47

Orkney.

ginandtonicwithlimes · 21/09/2023 08:50

North starts at the Humber.

scotstarstrikestwo · 21/09/2023 08:51

I'm a shetlander...everywhere is South 😅

theemmadilemma · 21/09/2023 08:51

The North starts around Cheshire and Sheffield.

I'm a Southerner in Sheffield and I definitely live in the North.

Beezknees · 21/09/2023 08:51

Newcastle is the furthest north I've been.

I'm from Nottingham. We are the midlands. The north starts at Sheffield.

Watford Gap. Dundee.

The south starts around Oxford for me. Furthest south I've been is Penzance.

Herecomesdehotstepper · 21/09/2023 08:57

Stornaway.

Broadly in line with the Humber, but there are some grey areas like Cheshire and north Lincolnshire.

It very much depends on your perspective. I was once told the North starts at Camden!

Nolongera · 21/09/2023 08:58

Far North of Scotland mainland.

Since the considerable majority of the UK live in England, when they refer to " North" as North of England, starts at Sheffield I would say.

If they were refering to the north of the UK maybe all of Scotland, plus Northumberland and Cumbria.

South of Scotland is South if you were living in Scotland and refering to Scotland.

There are bits of Scotland that are South of bits of England.
