Inverness.

The north starts at Bristol 😂

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 21/09/2023 19:03

Lake District is furthest North I've been.
To me, the North starts just above Nottingham.

MintJulia · 21/09/2023 19:05

Stornaway.

The North starts at Nottingham as far as I'm concerned. The Midlands start at Warwick.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/09/2023 19:07

Sullom Voe in the Shetlands

itsmyp4rty · 21/09/2023 19:08

I've been to a lot of place north of Birmingham, but having always lived in the south I still think of it as being in the north.

YoongiMarryMe · 21/09/2023 19:18

Durness
dont go, it’s awful. Terrible beaches.

North to me is anything above Aberfeldy. Anything below the border between Scotland and England is Very South. Grin

Sullom Voe in the Shetlands

If you ever go back, don't call it 'The Shetlands'. It's just Shetland, or alternatively the Shetland Islands.

Some people get surprisingly het up about this!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/09/2023 19:27

@ISeeMisledPeople I now live in Canada, so I suspect not. But I will bear that in mind should it ever happen!

aintnospringchicken · 21/09/2023 19:38

The furthest north I've been in the U.K. is Aberdeen - shocking place. So grey and oppressive.

Yes ,Aberdeen is a very grey city mainly because a lot of the buildings are built from granite.

Ultravox · 21/09/2023 19:41

John O’Groats

I’m Scottish but I’d think The North in terms of England to me would start about Sheffield

The North of Scotland to me would be above Inverness.

Labbingtons · 21/09/2023 19:44

Lochinver. But I’m pretty confident the North start further south than that.
I went to university in Sheffield and that’s definitely The North. Not sure Chesterfield is, so I’d say it starts in a small village just outside Sheffield.

MadCatandBirdLady · 21/09/2023 19:52

The Orkney islands.

DuchessOfSausage · 21/09/2023 19:58

Dunnet Head
North is anywhere north of Nottingham

itsgettingweird · 21/09/2023 19:59

Glasgow is furthest north I've been.

I think north of Manchester/Sheffield etc is north but I'm from the south coast near Southampton so probably have different ideas to many!

Regularly travel up to Sheffield (Ponds forge) but it's probably not North North Kissimmee?

Statice · 21/09/2023 20:07

Ben Nevis is the furthest north I have been in the U.K.

North England to me begins around the cities and surrounding towns that run approximately west from Liverpool to Hull on the East, so Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield (slightly south of this west to east imaginary line) Leeds and Hull.

I never said Yorkshire was in the Midlands. Scotch Corner is in Yorkshire and that marks the start of the North for most real Northerners.

Manchester is 200 miles south. Its definitely not the North.

Most of the population of Yorkshire lives south of Scotch Corner. So if not the north, where do you place Manchester, Liverpool and most of Yorkshire? You seem to agree that Yorkshire is not in the Midlands, so where is it, if not the north?

Mojoj · 21/09/2023 17:42

That's in the North of Scotland, another country. Is the OP talking about the furthest north of England you've ever been?

Seriously? The OP is clearly talking about the United Kingdom!

Not England.

And Scotland isn't "another country" - its a part of the same country you're in...United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Beezknees · 21/09/2023 20:47

Everyone saying the north starts at Nottingham/Derby - none of us who live here would agree! We are the MIDLANDS.

DownNative · 21/09/2023 21:03

To make it clearer, I've drawn two lines on a map of the UK.

Anything above the red line is the north of the UK.

Anything below blue is the south of the UK.

Inbetween is the midlands of the UK.

Scotland looks massive in comparison to England on this map. But in reality England is much bigger - 1.66 times bigger than Scotland!

AuntyMabelandPippin · 21/09/2023 21:04

Thurso.

Took us an age to get there too...

The map had it right before you started tinkering with it. How can somewhere in the "North West" be in the Midlands?

North East, North West, Yorkshire and Humberside = North

West Midlands, East Midlands = Midlands

South West, South East, London and Anglia = south.

DuchessOfSausage · 21/09/2023 21:15

@Beezknees , I said 'north of Nottingham'. By that I meant Nottingham's in the Midlands as is Derby and Stoke-on-Trent. I think Stoke might be the northernmost of those.
Cheshire is north, Shropshire is midlands.

MargaretThursday · 21/09/2023 21:18

North for me starts at Birmingham. I currently live in the south.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/09/2023 21:18

Snoopystick · 21/09/2023 07:16

John O’Groats. I think Northern England is roughly Sheffield and up.

I'm with you on both of these!
