inverness is the furthest I’ve been.

I think of the north starting at Sheffield.

That's in the North of Scotland, another country. Is the OP talking about the furthest north of England you've ever been?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 21/09/2023 17:43

Aberdeenshire but would love to do the north coast 500. I love in northern England,(60 miles from Scotland) so I’ve done all of that, right to the border on both sides.

Willyoujustbequiet · 21/09/2023 17:48

The north is Northumberland, Cumbria, Durham.

Scotch Corner is the cut off point. Liverpool and Manchester etc..are not the north.

cosmicgal · 21/09/2023 17:55

I'm in central Scotland (and Scottish) but I would refer to "the North" meaning roughly anywhere in England north of Manchester/Leeds/Sheffield/Hull ish. For Scotland, above say Perth or maybe Aviemore I would say "up north".

I've been to Orkney as my furthest north. Also Dunnet head like a pp (all I remember is the puffins!) as well as John o'groats (and Lands End). I do find it fascinating to hear how little of the UK some have travelled. I've been to all 4 countries. Wales and NI only a couple of times each to be fair. Lived in the other 2.

We always think of the North as the point at which you need an extra jumper. For us up around Nottingham. Yes, I know technically that's the midlands, but it's always so much colder up there than Surrey. Birmingham also cold, wet, grey. Manchester etc definitely North by weather standards.

The north east of England is actually a lot drier than parts of the south according to the Met Office.

They’re certainly not in the Midlands, neither is Yorkshire

No. Op is talking about the furthest north in the UK. Maybe try reading the title of the thread.

Could you not even be bothered to read the title?

Thread title says UK.

EggInANest · 21/09/2023 18:02

Dingwall is the furthest North I have been in GB

I think of ‘The North’ starting at about Sheffield.

BookSuperWorm · 21/09/2023 18:04

Glasgow is furthest I've been.

For me the north starts a bit before Nottingham!

beetr00 · 21/09/2023 18:08

furthest north, so far, beautiful coastline

Mumofsend · 21/09/2023 18:23

To me the vast majority of the UK are North. Actual north is the far side of the Midlands and up

NotFastButFurious · 21/09/2023 18:30

I’ve been to Orkney and Cape Wrath, the most north westerly point on the mainland.
the north starts just above Crewe IMO.

AmIAutumnalNow · 21/09/2023 18:36

Furthest north I've been is Thurso. It wasn't very nice

I would define the north as anything from Aviemore upwards.

4G5 · 21/09/2023 18:36

I feel 'north' once past Birmingham (live in London) but definitely, once you get to about Staffordshire, the landscape looks more 'north.' The fields are darker green, weather noticeably cooler and buildings look more damp. Just different somehow. Also, it's the accents and the general vibe. Scotland is a totally different country. The furthest north I've been in the U.K. is Aberdeen - shocking place. So grey and oppressive. I find the buildings in Scotland a bit austere and depressing as they tend to be coated in black grime. Furthest north I've been in general is Northern Finland. I'm not in a rush to return tbh.

coxesorangepippin · 21/09/2023 18:37

Drove a bit north on the road from Inverness to Wick then turned back as it was too long

I guess the Shetlands?

BlackForestCake · 21/09/2023 18:37

Grantham was Margaret Thatcher’s constituency, wasn't it? How can that possibly be t’North?

The Mersey – Humber line is nearly right but that would put Scunthorpe and Grimsby in the south, which is obviously ludicrous.

Skegness I'm not sure about. Is it IN the North, or just somewhere Northerners go for a day out?

My line would go from Grimsby to Sheffield to Liverpool.

FOJN · 21/09/2023 18:37

Durness, beautiful beaches.

Cleary Scotland is northern UK but I think of Scotland as Scotland.

"THE North" starts at about Sheffield I think.

From where the M6 is cobbled is th'North. Amazes me how many think that th'North stops around Newcastle!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/09/2023 18:46

Most north I've been is Skye. I live in Cumbria, but lived the first 40 years of my life in SE England. I used to think the north started at Birmingham, but now I'd say Sheffield / Liverpool.

I never said Yorkshire was in the Midlands. Scotch Corner is in Yorkshire and that marks the start of the North for most real Northerners.

Manchester is 200 miles south. Its definitely not the North.

Furthest North - Fort William, Scotland

I would consider Newcastle, the North of England, not of the UK.

Newcastle is still geographically in the north though, even taking Scotland in to account

User19537876 · 21/09/2023 18:59

Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds are north, Northumberland is proper north

TheLoveofAWestie · 21/09/2023 19:00

Sheffield or York whichever is furthest North
