The Karen = a racist white american woman who uses her white privilege to inflict terror upon a non white person.

That's it.

Someone called Karen from Croydon has got nothing to do with "The Karen". Tell your poor, unfortunate friends (sarcasm) to stop misappropriating a term that historically refers to a very dangerous entity to non white people in america.

Literally this!

Historically being the key word.

Funnily enough @DeeCee77 I manage to deplor both racism and misogyny.

As a decent human being fighting against both has always been part of my cultural and social baggage.

What colour are the posters on this thread? What colour am I?

DustyLee123 · 26/08/2023 09:18

Threads like this just perpetuate the misogyny. I hope it gets taken down.

ChaToilLeam · 26/08/2023 09:18

I’m fucking sick of it, I really am, and I certainly wouldn’t be using any company that perpetuates this term. Regardless of its origin.

Oh dear. Don't you understand?

The term should also not have been misappropriated to be used as it has in the UK. Do you think misogyny is ok? I'm sure the answer must be no.

But it’s not Karen from Croydon who’s misappropriating the term, is it? It’s millions of (mainly, but not exclusively, male) people all over the internet who have now taken that term to apply to any middle aged woman who isn’t sufficiently submissive.

Yes, exactly.

ThePoshUns · 26/08/2023 09:19

The Karen thing annoys me no end. It's an insult to all women over the age of 30, intended to shut us down.

I don't know about the historical basis for this name calling. I've just googled it though and it referred to female white privilege, but from what I've observed it's used against a woman as a form of disrespect and to say the woman 'llacks intelligence' .

I've been called a 'Karen' by another woman simply because I disagreed with their point of view and I'm black so how does that make sense.

I wonder where all this nonsense is coming from?

In any case taking a person's name and using it to attribute a certain characteristic to it is disrespectful and discriminatory.

It's a form of bullying and it's also misogynist.

It's become a trend that ignorant people tend to use when they want to disrespect a female and it needs to stop.

I'm actually glad this is being highlighted. I was wondering if I was the only one who found this 'trend' disturbing.

User452023 · 26/08/2023 09:21

*lacks intelligence..

Username1107 · 26/08/2023 09:21

It has moved on to be an ignorant term used by ignorant people as a means to shut middle age women down.

TheYadaYada · 26/08/2023 09:22

It may have its origins in the US, but it how become a common derogatory slur here in the UK. Unfortunately.

I thought it would go away, but I still hear it often.

Exactly this. It's vile.

surreygirl1987 · 26/08/2023 09:24

Someone will be along to explain it better than me but 'Karen' is really misogynistic age-ist shite. I can't believe anyone thought it was appropriate

Fully agree. It's a tool for silencing women. I'd like to complain, but they'd just see it ironic. Hence the silencing..

PonyPatter44 · 26/08/2023 09:24

DeeCee, we KNOW the origins of the bloody term. Stop hitting us with C&P shit!

Deecee, Could you try interacting instead of just posting articles that don't tell us anything new and which don't relate to the context that we're discussing and ignoring everything we say? If I wanted to have a conversation with Wikipedia I would.

Panseypotter · 26/08/2023 08:49

Insults for women.. scold, nag, gossip, witch, crone and so on and on and on. Two new ones added relatively recently being terf and karen. It's misogyny pure and simple. Name calling to shut up, undermine, ridicule and castigate 'uppity' and non conforming women. Should you dare to have an opinion, should you dare to complain. Conform remain silent, I don't bloody think so.

Amen.

Ffs give it a rest!! We aren't in the US, I'm not even in the UK but the usage of the word Karen means the same thing here. You are just derailing the thread for your own agenda.

BibbleandSqwauk · 26/08/2023 09:28

@DeeCee77 if the usage of the term had not in fact moved on and does not mean what we are all trying to tell you it now does, the original ad the OP is posting about would not have been made and would make no sense. But it was made and does make sense in the context that the phrase is now used. Everyone on here knows and understands the point you are repeatedly making, that the term originated in one context but language is mobile, dynamic and changes - otherwise "gay" would still mean skipping off merrily for a picnic with home made lemonade. Please can you try and engage with that instead of just posting more of the same?

wayyour · 26/08/2023 09:29

@DeeCee77 Are you being disingenuous as you've had this explained multiple times now?

We're all aware of the source of the term 'karen' but this term has been hijacked, misappropriated, do you understand, to be used as a misogynistic term to be applied to women of a certain age, regardless of their skin colour (my sister in law, who is not white, middle-aged, has been called a Karen).
