And btw dictionaries are descriptive, not prescriptive - they always lag behind actual real-world usage. So it’ll take a while for any dictionary to record the usage-change and list Karen as a misogynistic ageist slur.

So you admit lack of documentary evidence of a definition of Karen that is different from the one I have been using. Thank you for the concession.

NotTerfNorCis · 27/08/2023 21:05

Because challenging it is impossible, BillaBongGirl. You'd just get called a Karen again. The fact that you challenged it would 'prove' you're a Karen.

This is the problem with the "karen" slur. There is no comeback from it or you're proving you are in fact 💯 a "karen". Load of 💩 😡

NotTerfNorCis · 27/08/2023 21:09

This thread itself contains a lot of 'documentary evidence'.

Unless you want to disregard anything people who don't agree with you say?

MorrisZapp · 27/08/2023 21:09

Right I'm off to watch a drama about privileged women being raped in magdalene laundries in our lifetimes. Enjoy filling the thread, love you all x

It's the dunking stool all over again.

Fact is BillaBongGirl, you're just as likely to be called a Karen as anyone, because you're a woman with strong opinions. At some point it will happen to you.

That’s a risk I’m willing to take.

No. As I’ve already pointed out, the use of ‘often racist’ shows the dictionary is already acknowledging that Karen as a slur isn’t always used in a racist context. I’m merely pointing out that the dictionary lags behind actual real-world usage. The actual real-world usage of Karen as a misogynist ageist slur has been extremely well-documented in this thread, not that you’re willing to admit that! How about you do that?

It 100% did not. @BillaBongGirl or the 'user' as you call them has gone above and beyond to calmly state her point, reason, and explain. Over and over again. Despite the enormous pile on she is receiving. To call her a troll is dehumanising and derogatory. Trollhunting is also against talking guidelines.

Kaz40s · 27/08/2023 21:15

Who gives a crap where it came from, woman are being silenced regardless by the use of the term & its wrong. THE END.

MorrisZapp · 27/08/2023 21:02

Roundly ignored? Like you roundly ignored the links about the Karen's Diner chain of restaurants in Australia, a country that you think only uses the racist definition because of their dictionary?

I ignored the diner chain as I couldn’t work out the relevance because if Karen were a slur as you assert, then they’d hardly have restaurants up and down the country called “Ethnic/Sexist Slur Diner” now would they?

Secondly, no I don’t think that about Australia and their usage of Karen. If you take a second look at my posts I said it was likely or a good chance that an Australian advert by an Australian firm would be using the Australian definition of Karen. Likely and good chance do not mean “only”.

It is not a misogynist ageist slur. And just because a bunch of Karens think so on this thread does not make it so.

In what way are people on this thread 'Karens'? Please explain.

Sounds like you're using the most common definition: 'women saying something you don't like'.

Yep, completely contradictory

Ah and here it is, ladies! We’re Karens because we object to being slurred as Karens!

Proving exactly what we’ve been saying all along, thanks for showing your hand @Lndnmummy

Excuse me, you have misappropriated the use of the word Karen. It is for racist women only and any racist posts should be reported to Mumsnet. Tia.

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/08/2023 21:19

Can you clarify that you are using the term to claim that posters on this thread are racist?
Otherwise you are using it in the exact form that has been argued is appropriation.

wayyour · 27/08/2023 21:19

What nonsense.

They've done no such thing. They've even tried to grasp at straws, when proved wrong, and claimed that being condescending is anti social behaviour. Just one of many examples of silliness.

Lndnmummy · 27/08/2023 21:20

WolfFoxHare · 27/08/2023 21:05

@Lndnmummy how about you take your own advice and take our word for it that Karen is used as a misogynistic ageist slur? Or does that only go one way?

There is no chance in hell I would take your word for anything. No

BillaBongGirl · 27/08/2023 21:20

Edited

No, I can’t, because that’s a misuse of Karen if it’s being used as a slur.

If Karen is used to call out entitled condescending attitude/behaviour that isn’t racist (which is not often, as the definition says it often is), then it’s not a slur because it’s an insult to a persons attitude/behaviour not their person.

Do you see the difference? Slurs are against the person and often against a protected characteristic like disability, sexuality, race, nationality and so on.

slurs are not against bad attitudes or behaviour.

So if someone calls a woman Karen when she hasn’t acted like a Karen, such that it is a slur, that is then a misuse of Karen.

@BillaBongGirl do you understand that 'Karen' is most often used just to shut down women who have opinions? And it's not actually a reflection on those women and their characters?
