How can you say an Australian advert, by an Australian company is “clearly” using a meaning of ‘Karen’ that you think is the “common usage” in the U.K., a different county 5,000 miles away, and a different culture instead of the meaning of Karen as defined in the Australian dictionary as I posted?

That’s a 5,000 mile stretch.

No, it isn't.

No one in advertising will touch the idea. Will they use a cat meme if a patient is being racist? Will they use that for an advertisement? Will they make fun of it?

Absolutely not. And rightly so.

SomeCatFromJapan · 26/08/2023 21:45

Absolutely not. And rightly so.

If a patient was racially abusing the staff I'd hope they'd phone the police! It's not really a matter for a jokey meme reference. Mind you nor is mocking middle-aged women but as we've seen, they're fair game, they're just like toddlers tantrumming for chocolate buttons after all, objects of derision.

Certainly DeeCee seems to want to shut women up.

How? Because DeeCee77 is disagreeing with you?

We don’t need you to cut and paste like a demented bot.

We KNOW the origins of the term.

We also know that this is most definitely NOT how the term is currently used.

Why can’t you engage with what posters are saying about what the term has changed into? Or do you simply find it useful that society has a term of abuse for middle-aged women irrespective of racism?

We don’t need you to cut and paste like a demented bot.

Wow! And you're preaching about 'Karen'? I'd rather be called that than a "demented bot". Why the insult because someone disagrees with you? Isn't that just as bad, no actually worse?

SomeCatFromJapan · 26/08/2023 21:52

Oh come off it, the level of spamming was ridiculous.

They touched it, they published it. They Australian in Australia. Very sure they use Australian definition of “Karen” which is definitely not an offensive slur definition. You don’t publish slurs, am I right?

Why you arguing Australians have published an advert using “Karen” with a meaning that that some MumsNet users 5,000 miles away in the U.K. think Karen is offensive and of them only think it possibly might even be as bad as a slur?

Australian ain’t your colony no more. Why you trying to tell Australia how they word their adverts? Hmm? Bit British Empire of you?

This is brilliant.

Not sure it's intentional, because I suspect humour is not your strongest suit, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

You know that new edit ability? Wish there was a way to block/mute a poster 🙄

I agree. This thread would've been a good place to block loads of people 'protesting' about insignificant things or calling everything 'misogyny', starting with the OP.

Rather I am saying that we have no right to judge the appropriateness of a cat meme for an Australian audience from here in the U.K.

Not our business.

Your assertions of they won’t touch it, when they did & they published it. And “rightly so” all apply to British culture.

You are not taking into consideration that Australia is not the U.K. and their culture is not British culture.

Am I being thick but are you saying because some people in a country far away from us were racist we have to quietly submit to being shut down and insulted by sexist and agist slurs without complaint or we ourselves are then the racist abusers? Doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

Australian women being called Karens for asking people to put masks on. Much discussion of the memes and commentary from actual Australians.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/08/2023 20:22

You seem to have misunderstood quite a lot of what has been said. Ot maybe not even tried to understand it.

I'm sure you will make an effort to understand it, and to educate yourself and I wish you all the best in your endeavour to do so.

This is utterly patronizing and condescending. But 'Karen' is the worst, apparently.

That's literally it. Don't ask for an explanation, none will be forthcoming.

No you’re not thick, no Karen is not a slur, and yes if you believe those who allege that Karen is a slur you’re buying into white feminism and working against WoC.

But in England Karen IS used as a slur against older women of all colours who do not simper and defer to men at all times.

OnTheWayThere · 26/08/2023 22:18

Boomboom22 · 26/08/2023 15:40

I don't think the term Karen has any race connotations at all now, it means any woman over 40 having an opinion now.
Like woke used to mean aware of racism but certainly doesn't mean that now.

Ah well if white people (I assume) take over a word and tell you it's moved on to a usage they've assigned to it, I suppose that's it then. It's only right that you conform and forget what you knew before they took over. It can only ever be used in the way they've decided from then on.

TheaBrandt · 26/08/2023 22:19

Speak to the men using it to shut down women of all colours then don’t harangue us.

DojaPhat · 26/08/2023 22:23

No other group faces the amount of mistreatment and condemnation as white women.

TheaBrandt · 26/08/2023 22:25

Don’t think anyone is saying that. But any group consistently slagged off for just existing on the world is allowed to err mention it?!

I don't want anyone to use Karen to mean 'talk to the manager', and I don't want anyone changing the meaning of my name. But they have, and by objecting to it I am not assigning it anything at all. I want it back please.

HRTQueen · 26/08/2023 22:27

constantly slagged off for just existing

oh behave seriously the high drama
