It really comes to something when white women feel demonised and almost subhuman because someone called them a Karen.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/08/2023 19:57

I thought there were plenty of non white women of this thread, who don't like it either and who consider it, rightly, a slur.

Also, not sure anyone mentioned feeling demonised and subhuman, but please feel free to use it for added drama.

Imagine being so clueless that you compare women’s valid concerns about and real lived experience of a misogynistic slur, with a toddler having a tantrum.

It’s unbelievable.

DojaPhat · 26/08/2023 20:20

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat Oh my mistake there were quite a few posters in the thread explaining that Karen is used to belittle, ridicule, castigate (women of a certain age and or class). "Derogatory" and "witch" were also used in the thread. I didn't realise that my use of the word demonise i.e to portray something/someone as evil or worthy of contempt or blame was adding to the drama. I must have misunderstood what those posters were describing then. As you were.

You seem to have misunderstood quite a lot of what has been said. Ot maybe not even tried to understand it.

I'm sure you will make an effort to understand it, and to educate yourself and I wish you all the best in your endeavour to do so.

WolfFoxHare · 26/08/2023 20:23

@DojaPhat women of a certain age, yes. I don’t recall any posts mentioning class. And do you think it’s acceptable to belittle, ridicule or castigate middle-aged women?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/08/2023 20:29

@AlisonDonut I think you made the point very well.

DreamTheMoors · 26/08/2023 20:31

My most beloved person in the whole world was named Karen. She was beautiful. Funny.
She died in 2005 from breast cancer.
I’d give anything to tease her about the “Karen” thing.
Please pass the bread, Karen.
Let’s go shopping, Karen.
I love you, Karen.
We were supposed to be old ladies together. Now I’ll have to grow old by myself.
I miss you, Karen.

DojaPhat · 26/08/2023 20:32

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat Thank you for your kind wishes. If I ever fully grasp just how much offence Karen appears to cause some women I will indeed stop and reflect at my good fortune.

Flowers

It really isn't that hard. You can do it!

DojaPhat · 26/08/2023 20:49

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat I know right. I just cannot fathom how tough white women have it. No idea how they manage to cope in the face of this sort of adversity.

I'm sorry. That's a lovely tribute.

It's past time women fought back against people's cruel, sexist attempts to put us in our place. I will continue do that on behalf of your Karen and all the mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and grandmothers who are upset by this pathetic, childish slurring of their name. Absolutely awful to hear of women feeling bad about their name over this.

Do you think there’s no ageism and misogyny?

DojaPhat · 26/08/2023 20:54

Anyway, I think the company missed the step with this ad. It doesn't seem to have any appeal or target (audience) considering the product. In anycase, every group, as it were, should be able to have a 'safe space' where they can gather and share their experiences without someone bulldozing in to ridicule them. I can't say it will ever make sense to me. As a Black woman I'm often more perplexed than anything else with the Karen discourse. But this forum is a great space for white women to gather and discuss the issues which affect them. This is of course one of them. My view of it or any other issue pertaining to white women is immaterial.

Oh ffs. Have you even read the thread? It’s ALL women, including WOC, who are getting called Karens when they assert themselves, mainly by misogynistic men who are delighted to have an excuse to stick the boot in while also pretending to be striking a blow against racism. It’s being used to shut women up. And you’re colluding in that, round of applause for you. 👍

Lndnmummy · 26/08/2023 21:13

Boomboom22 · 26/08/2023 15:40

I don't think the term Karen has any race connotations at all now, it means any woman over 40 having an opinion now.
Like woke used to mean aware of racism but certainly doesn't mean that now.

It does certainly have 'race connotations' if you are not white. 100%.
I am really perplexed at all the people saying they have never heard it in the connotations of race. We clearly move in very different circles. Thankfully.

I pray that one day people will be more enraged about the behaviours of Karen's than feeling indignant about the term.

Shoe fits etc etc

DojaPhat · 26/08/2023 19:41

Imagine thinking that Karen is a slur and an offensive one at that. I do kind of understand though, it's similar to the utter consternation my toddler niece experiences when I suggest to her that chocolate buttons will not suffice in place of dinner. Apparently I'll never understand the struggle.

Aw bless. You are so off the mark it's actually funny. Or maybe a bit embarrassing for you

Indeed. And no self awareness whatsoever as to why that may be.

Nobody is denying the original meaning exists. We are saying that this advert, which is supposedly the topic of this thread, is clearly using the other meaning, and as such is misogynistic.

No amount of cut and pasted links to Emmett Till’s Wikipedia page will make that an anti-racist advert.

How can you say an Australian advert, by an Australian company is “clearly” using a meaning of ‘Karen’ that you think is the “common usage” in the U.K., a different county 5,000 miles away, and a different culture instead of the meaning of Karen as defined in the Australian dictionary as I posted?

That’s a 5,000 mile stretch.

Lndnmummy · 26/08/2023 21:28

BillaBongGirl · 26/08/2023 15:53

I think people are conflating the use of Karen with the misuse of Karen.

I can call a man a misogynist all day long, even if he’s not a misogynist. The act of my misusing it to insult him and personally attack him, doesn’t change the definition or usage of misogynist,

I can call anyone here a racist Nazi all day long too, that similarly doesn’t change the definition of or usage of the words racist or Nazi.

So stop with the whole argument that er well someone I heard of or know was called Karen and they weren’t being a Karen so that means Karen must be ageist and misogynist. No it doesn’t.

This is such a brilliant way of putting it. Exactly this

BillaBongGirl · 26/08/2023 21:33

inamarina · 26/08/2023 19:45

It’s not just ‘one example of misuse” though, ‘Karen’ is being used like this quite frequently.
This is what several women on this thread keep saying, why are you disregarding their experiences?

It was just one example that I dismissed and only in terms that the experience was an example of a misuse of the insult “Karen” as the victim was not displaying any Karen behaviour. One single anecdote of an insult being used once doesn’t prove the definition or common usage of an insult, much less its origin or intended usage.

Several women have been of a similar opinion to me, I could ask you the same question. Why are you disregarding us? The truth is no one is disregarding anyone, you can listen to others and still not agree.

BillaBongGirl · 26/08/2023 21:38

Saschka · 26/08/2023 19:02

Look at the advert. Do you honestly think “For when your patient is being a Karen” means “For when your patient is being racist”? How would that even make any sense?

Or, in context, is it saying “For when some old trout is at your reception desk bitching about something and you want to get rid of her?”

Neither is exactly stellar customer service, but it seems clear from the context that they mean the second, misogynistic meaning not the first, anti-racist meaning.

No, it means what it says. You’re not adding context, you’re obfuscating.
